Brooke and Sara are still hoping to be extra thankful this Thanksgiving by finding their furever home.

Please share to help us get the girls adopted for the holidays.

Who’s looking for BIG LOVE?💕 Where are our Great Dane lovers?

Brooke and Sara are looking for YOU! These two are the best of friends and family so they stick together…literally some times. Neither girl likes to be without the other and together they make an awesome bonded pair. Both Brooke and Sara are very sweet and friendly, very dog friendly, do ok with cats…they are curious but run away fast the minute they think the cat may get them. 🤭 They are also little human friendly and will make a wonderful addition to your family. You can’t help but love them and if you love Great Danes then these two are for you.

If you’re interested in giving Brooke and Sara their furever home the next step is to fill out the adoption application on our website.

🦮 TUESDAY TIP 🦮

Take a moment today and write down something you’re most thankful for. Some things like family, love, freedom and, of course, dogs but what or who are you thankful for today?

We are thankful for so much but especially our foster families, our volunteers and all of YOU who help us continue our mission of saving the forgotten dogs of Butts County.

Oh how I wish dog abusers could be put to sleep!! 🤬

Sweet baby RUTH arrived at Animal Control in very bad shape, after being abandoned to fend for herself. This poor girl was severely emaciated, nothing but skin and bones 😔😡 We weren’t sure if she would survive, but she is now filling out beautifully and gets lots of love from the staff and volunteers at the shelter, plus frequent meals to continue building on her nutrition.

RUTH has a gorgeous brindle coat, likes other dogs and is quite the talker. She moans, groans and whimpers to let you know when she wants something. It's very cute and matches her sweet cute personality.

RUTH was allowed to go home with one of the shelter staff members for a few nights, and we learned that she gets along well with smaller adult dogs, is house trained, crate trained and very playful. 💕

To Foster or Adopt RUTH and show her how humans are supposed to love their pets, please apply at our website.

🦮 TUESDAY TIP🦮

3 second Rule …

https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1B1sjUm3h7/?mibextid=WC7FNe

WHEN SECONDS COUNT

This post is not advocating that dogs meet every other dog, but about how to go about it, if and when it does happen, in a safer way.

The 3 second rule for dogs meeting each other is used as a guideline to help foster positive introductions, prevent either dog from feeling overwhelmed or trapped and prevent any potential reactivity and stress.

A short 3 second introduction is enough time to provide important information to both dogs.

Enough information for dogs to know – “are you a threat?”, “do I like you?”, “do I want to learn more about you?”, “do I really dislike you?”, “do I need you to go away?” etc. Both dogs may not feel the same way – one may not be happy to engage while the other may want to.

All interactions should ideally happen like this, not just initially. Just like us, dogs can have off days – things like pain, trigger stacking, lack of sleep or a host of other reasons can influence whether a dog wants to interact or not.

There are countless times I have witnessed meetings or introductions between dogs that have gone on just a few seconds too long and have not ended well. This can have long lasting effects on future behaviour when meeting other dogs.

Understanding body language is critically important. If we are going to share our lives with another species, protect them, advocate for them and help them feel safe, then we need to understand and respect their language.

The examples in this post of red and green flags are just a few general ones to look out for – there are many more and these will differ depending on the individual dog, context and circumstances.

🆘 Dog in need of a new home (courtesy post)

🚨 This is Leah. Her world has been turned upside down and the humans who are caring for her contacted our rescue for help.
Do we have room? NO!
Do we have the time in our schedule to network her? NO!
Do we know if we can even help? NO!

Are we going to try…YES!!!

Leah was living with her dad just 3 weeks ago and doing all the dog things a happy dog does. She was running and playing, her belly was full each night, she was getting all of the belly rubs that she loves plus knowing she was safe each day with her dad. Unfortunately, all of that has changed for her. Her dad was involved in a car accident and is now paralyzed and fighting to survive each day. Unfortunately, for Leah that means she is left waiting and wondering what’s going on??!? The family of her dad is pleading with us to help her and to give her a life he can no longer do since the future of his own life is uncertain at this time.

Leah is a 2-3 year old, medium 40lb hound mix, friendly, loves to play but also enjoys settling down for pets and snuggles. She has been around children 4 yrs old and up and does well, she is dog friendly, leash trained, crated trained and with her normal routine does well in the house. We are unsure of her behavior with cats.

We are seeking your assistance to help this family…Leah needs a foster home or someone to adopter her immediately. Or if you’re a rescue partner of ours and are able to help place her, please reach out.

Thank you 🙏🏻 let’s give the family of Leah’s dad some hope that she will be ok while they are struggling to survive themselves.

You can’t help but love our sweet wiggle butt KAYLAN (aka Kalani)! This young girl can be very timid at first but her big brown eyes search yours for signs that you mean her no harm and then her butt goes to wiggling 😊

KAYLAN has made herself right at home in foster care as you can see in these pics provided by her foster mom. She asks her humans for affection and, while still timid, she is brave enough to investigate things that make her nervous including those scary house cats! She even bravely shares her couch now with the cats.

KAYLAN loves other dogs and would enjoy having another dog to play with. A fenced backyard to run in would be a huge bonus 🙌🏻

To Adopt KAYLAN, please apply at our website.

🐿️Did someone say Squirrel?!🐿️

Young SHADOW is in foster care where her foster mom has learned what a sweetheart SHADOW is! This spunky pup is less than 2 years old and loves to sun bathe in the backyard ☀️ when she’s not chasing those pesky squirrels! 🐿️ Squirrel patrol is her favorite pastime.

SHADOW is playful but very gentle. She has great house manners and walks well on a leash. Not only is she affectionate, she demands affection! ❤️ (see the nose in mom’s face 😂) She’s a little bit needy in the love department.

What SHADOW needs most is a loving family and a place to settle in and call home 🏡 Please apply at our website to meet this sweet girl.

🐕‍🦺Tuesday Tip🐕‍🦺

Do you know what to do if you have LOST or FOUND a dog?

Dogs get lost or go missing for numerous reasons. Please do not assume any lost/found dog has been dumped, someone could be looking for their beloved pet and would be heartbroken if proper measures have not been taken to be reunited.

LOST means ‘your dog is lost and you are missing your dog’
FOUND means ‘this dog does not belong to me but I am looking for its owner’

“I’ve lost my dog, now what do I do?”

🐾contact your neighbors and report your lost pet to your local animal control that way if someone calls that found your dog they know whom to contact
🐾 dogs lost from car accidents or stressful situations typically stay in the area
🐾 put out dog bedding and your worn clothing and let their nose help bring them home
🐾put up bright neon large posters with the dog’s picture and your contact number that can be read without getting out of a vehicle. So a picture can be snapped from their vehicle too. Also put a large poster in your yard so if someone is driving around that may have found your dog they know where they belong.
🐾 print flyers with the dog’s picture, location lost from and your contact info and place in surrounding areas, give to postal workers, bus drivers or anyone who is frequently in your area
🐾 set up a feeding station if you have multiple sightings and feed at the same time of day
🐾 post on social media—always include your phone number to be contacted, make your post public if it’s your personal page so it can be shared, use the same picture of your dog when posting on multiple sights (there are so many lost dogs it’s confusing if the pictures are different angles or lighting) also make sure comments are turned on if it’s personal page so people can provide updates.
🐾go IN PERSON every 3 days to the surrounding county animal shelters to look for your dog. Do not assume your dog is not there, your dog may look different to the staff so it’s best to look in person.
🐾if your dog is microchipped, call or go online to the chip company to report your dog is lost. This ensures your contact on the chip is up to date so that if your dog is scanned and reported to the chip company as ‘found’ you can be reunited quickly
🐾once your dog is back home PLEASE make sure to go to your original social media post and click the three dots on the top right and select “edit” and update with new info. This helps when your post has been shared multiple times.

“ I have FOUND a dog that does not belong to me, what do I do now?”

🐾take a picture, check for a collar or tags with contact info. If the dog has a rabies tag, call the number on the tag. The vet’s office typically can search their system and find the owner that way.
🐾call neighbors or ask people in the area if they know the dog. Drive around the area and look for people who might be searching for the dog.
🐾call the local animal control facility in the county where the dog is located to report the found dog. DO NOT take the dog out of state if you’re traveling. Animal Shelters are there to help reunite owners with their missing pets and this is where most people call first.
🐾take the dog to a veterinary office, animal hospital to be scanned for a microchip. This is a FREE service. You can not feel a microchip so until the dog is scanned you will not know if it has a chip or not.
🐾 post as FOUND on social media lost/found pet pages. Make the post public on your personal page and allow comments. Include a picture of the dog, area/location of where the dog was found, phone number of who to call if they know the dog. Often times post are made without this info or contact info and the owner sees it but cannot not get in touch with the finder of the dog. The more info provided the faster the dog is back home.
🐾 print flyers with the dog’s picture, location found and your contact info and place in surrounding areas, give to postal workers, bus drivers or anyone who is frequently in your area
🐾once the dog is reunited with the owner or turned over to animal control please click the three dots in the top right corner of your original post to add an update. This helps when your post has been shared multiple times.
🐾 if you have found an injured dog and it’s normal business hours please contact the county animal control. If it is after normal business hours please call the non-emergency number for local police for assistance.
