New Year’s Eve Pet Safety Tips – Celebrate Safely!

As we prepare to say goodbye to 2024 and ring in the New Year, let’s make sure our pets are safe and comfortable during the festivities. New Year’s Eve can be stressful for our pets, so here are a few tips to keep them happy while you celebrate:

🎆 Loud fireworks can be scary for pets. Keep them indoors in a safe, quiet space. Close windows, draw curtains, and consider playing soft music or white noise to help calm them.

🍹 Many party snacks and drinks are toxic to pets, including alcohol, chocolate, and anything containing grapes or raisins. Make sure guests know not to feed your pets!

🎉 Confetti, balloons, and party poppers can look like toys but may pose choking or ingestion hazards. Keep these out of reach.

🐕 If your pet gets anxious or tries to escape, ensure they’re wearing a collar with up-to-date ID tags. Microchips are an added layer of security.

✨ Panting, pacing, hiding, or excessive barking could indicate your pet is feeling overwhelmed. Provide comfort and reassurance, and don’t hesitate to reach out if they need extra care.

Remember, emergencies don’t take holidays, and neither do we! Our team is here for you 24/7, including New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. If your pet needs care, you can count on us to help.

Call us anytime at (904) 853-6310 — we’re here when you need us. Wishing you and your pets a happy, healthy, and safe start to 2025! 🎇🐾

Traveling with your pet this holiday season? Keep your furry companion safe and comfortable with these tips:

🚗 Secure your pet with a harness, carrier, or crate to prevent distractions while driving. Never let your pet sit on your lap while driving!

✈️ If traveling by plane, use an airline-approved carrier and make sure it’s well-ventilated. Label the carrier with your pet’s name, your contact info, and travel details. Ensure your pet’s vaccines and health certificates are up to date if traveling out of state or country.

💊 If your pet gets anxious or motion sick, consult your vet for advice or medications.

🎒 Bring food, water, medications, a leash, waste bags, and a familiar blanket or toy to keep your pet calm.

Remember, traveling can be stressful for pets. If your pet shows any signs of distress or becomes unwell during your trip, we’re OPEN 24/7 to help!

Hosting holiday gatherings can be exciting, but they come with some risks for your pets. Keep these tips in mind to ensure your celebrations are safe for everyone:

🍗 Keep human food out of reach, and remind guests not to share scraps.

🎁 Ribbons, bows, and small decorations might look like toys but can pose choking or ingestion risks. Clean up quickly after unwrapping gifts.

🚪 With guests coming and going, pets can slip out unnoticed. Make sure your pet has a collar with ID tags and keep an eye on doors.

✨ Provide a quiet area where your pet can relax away from the noise and excitement of the party.

If your pet shows signs of distress or eats something they shouldn’t, our team is available 24/7 to help. Give us a call at (904) 853-6310, or stop by 301 Jacksonville Drive, Jacksonville Beach, FL. Have a safe and happy holiday season!

🐾 Meet Cooper, a brave 3-month-old Labrador Retriever who visited our ER team due to severe anemia caused by G.I. parasites. His red blood cell count was dangerously low, leaving him weak and in need of urgent care.

Dr. Sydney Davis and the team jumped into action, starting a life-saving blood transfusion right away. After such a big day, Cooper was so relaxed he took a well-deserved nap during his transfusion! 😴❤️

We're thrilled to share that Cooper handled everything like a champ and is now back home, wagging his tail and enjoying life with his loving family. 🐶🎉

✨ Stories like Cooper’s remind us why we do what we do. Share some love for this sweet pup in the comments! 🐾❤️

🚫 Foods to Avoid Feeding Your Pets This Thanksgiving 🚫

If you are preparing a Thanksgiving meal, remember that certain foods are harmful to pets. Avoid giving them:

🍫 Chocolate (even a small amount can be toxic)
🍇 Grapes and raisins (can lead to kidney failure)
🍞 Uncooked yeast dough (can expand in their stomach)
🦴 Turkey bones (can cause choking or GI blockages)

Even a small “treat” can lead to serious health issues. For any concerns, call First Coast Veterinary Specialists & Emergency at (904) 853-6310—we’re open 24/7 to ensure your pet stays safe this holiday.

🐾 Philly's Amazing Comeback Story! 🐾

Philly was brought to First Coast Veterinary Specialists & Emergency after experiencing severe vomiting. Radiographs showed something alarming – metallic leash clips in his stomach! 🦴 Philly was rushed into surgery with Dr. Dan Linden, where we discovered two perforations in his stomach wall caused by the clips. Blood tests revealed he was also suffering from *zinc toxicity*.

Our team immediately began intensive care to treat his septic abdomen and methemoglobinemia (a condition that disrupts oxygen transport in the blood). Philly's blood was turning chocolate brown due to this condition, and his oxygen levels were dangerously low. 😢

Through multiple blood transfusions, plasma transfusions, methylene blue therapy, antibiotics, and fluid treatments, Philly showed incredible strength. He even battled through an acute kidney injury (AKI) caused by hemoglobin in his urine. But thanks to the round-the-clock dedication of our ER doctors, surgeons, and staff, Philly gradually improved each day. 💪❤️

After 11 days of hospitalization, surgery, and intensive care, we are overjoyed to announce that Philly went home with his family, tail wagging and full of life again! 🎉 We all fell in love with Philly during his stay, and while we miss him, we’re so happy he’s back where he belongs.

Special thanks to Pet Paradise for their support in helping Philly recover! 🐶💚

Supporting Our Veterinary Family 💙

This past week, the southeastern United States was severely impacted by Hurricane Helene. Our hospital and immediate area were fortunate to make it through the storm safely, but the same cannot be said for other areas in the greater region.

Major flooding has destroyed homes, businesses, and entire communities in Western North Carolina. The storm knocked out power and cell phone service, and many areas are completely without potable water a week later. Our friends at South Asheville Veterinary Emergency & Specialty (SAVES) in Asheville, North Carolina were impacted by the storm along with many others in Asheville.

To help support our friends at SAVES and the pets in their community – First Coast Veterinary Specialists & Emergency would like to share the SAVES “Hilda’s Hero Fund”. Hilda’s Hero Fund is an angel fund that was created by veterinary technicians at SAVES to support pets and families in need. The fund benefits families in need of financial assistance who require lifesaving care for their pets.

Learn more about Hilda’s Hero Fund by visiting the SAVES website or scanning the QR code. If you are able, you may also donate directly to the Hilda’s Hero Fund via the link below. Any amount helps and 100% of proceeds goes to the fund. If you are not in a position to donate, please share this post with other pet parents and animal lovers – every share can help get the word out.

Our Story

First Coast Veterinary Specialists (FCVS) Founder, Medical Director and Head of Surgery: W. Thomas (“Tom”) McNicholas, Jr., DVM, Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Surgeons, established First Coast Veterinary Specialists at its current location in February of 2017. Serving northeast Florida and south Georgia communities, FCVS is a referral specialty center with board certified specialists in surgery and anesthesiology working in partnership with primary care veterinarians and other board certified specialists to provide advanced care from the most experienced veterinarians in the region. Dr. McNicholas is an academically trained veterinary surgeon (Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine) with more than 18 years in an exclusive surgical setting. Board certified in veterinary surgery since 2003, Dr. McNicholas has performed countless soft tissue and oncologic procedures and in excess of 3000 TPLOs, 3000 cruciate extracapsular stabilizations, 2000 Medial Patella Luxation (MPL) stabilizations and 750 neurosurgical procedures. He also has a special interest in utilizing non-surgical and physical therapy protocols as a complement or alternative to surgery. Dr. McNicholas is the former owner of Affiliated Veterinary Specialists and Animal ER in Jacksonville, where he practiced for more than 10 years. After selling and then departing from AVS in 2015, Dr. McNicholas established a successful consulting veterinary surgery practice, pursued advanced studies in canine physical therapy and rehabilitation, and was privileged to be a staff surgeon at Dallas Veterinary Surgical Center (DVSC), one of the oldest and largest veterinary surgical centers in the country. Dr. McNicholas returned to the First Coast in February of 2017 to establish once again a surgery-focused practice that offers First Coast residents and their pets a level of compassionate care that is unmatched in the industry, and that respects and fosters the relationship the family veterinarian has with their clients and patients.

FCVS Staff Surgeon: Megan L. Wilson, DVM, MS, Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Surgeons-Small Animal, graduated from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan, followed by a rotating internship at the university and a surgical internship in Orlando, Florida. She completed her surgical residency at Kansas State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, where she also obtained her Master of Science in Biomedical Science. Dr. Wilson enjoys all aspects of veterinary surgery. During her residency, she conducted research on weight-bearing improvement variables for dogs following TPLO surgery and on dogs with hind limb lameness, and she presented her research findings to veterinary surgeons at the American College of Veterinary Surgeons conference in Phoenix in October 2018.

FCVS Locum Surgeon: Ken Greenwood, DVM, MS, Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Surgeons, was the first board certified veterinary surgeon in Atlanta and a founding veterinarian of Northlake Veterinary Surgery. He is a graduate of the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine, and completed his surgical internship at Purdue University, followed by a residency and master’s degree at The University of Georgia.

In addition to providing specialized surgical care for thousands of dogs and cats at Northlake, Dr. Greenwood has provided years of pro bono surgical services for Zoo Atlanta, operating on a wide variety of exotic animals. In 2011, Dr. Greenwood obtained advanced training in raptor external skeletal fixation at University of Minnesota. He remains active in training the next generation of veterinary surgeons, having established weekly video-conference rounds between Northlake and the University of Georgia, serving as a locum professor at UGA, and mentoring and advising many surgical residents. A longtime leader in the Atlanta veterinary community, Dr. Greenwood was voted the 2006 Veterinarian of the Year by the Greater Atlanta Veterinary Medical Society. In his free time, Dr. Greenwood has traveled to the Northern and Southern poles of the world photographing and researching whales and wildlife. He remains fascinated by animals in the wild and continues to travel the seas in hopes of one day encountering the blue whale. Dr. Greenwood and his wife, Beth, have four daughters, Sarah, Anna, Bonnie, and Grace, and a clowder of cats. Fortunately for FCVS, one of Dr. Greenwood’s daughters lives right here in the First Coast, so it doesn’t take too much arm twisting to lure Dr. Greenwood down to FCVS several times throughout the year. FCVS Consulting Anesthesiologist: With over 20 years of experience in veterinary anesthesiology, James Bailey, DVM, MS, Diplomate, American College of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia, has safely anesthetized everything from critically ill cats, dogs, horses and cows to manatee, elephants, ostriches, dolphins and polar bears. Dr. Bailey is the President and founder of Innovative Veterinary Medicine, Inc., a biomedical research and development firm in Gainesville, FL. He has a doctorate in veterinary medicine from Colorado State University, a Master of Science in veterinary physiology and pharmacology from The Ohio State University and is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Anesthesia and Analgesia. Further, he spent 11.5 years as a professor of veterinary anesthesia and analgesia at the University of Florida, College of Veterinary Medicine, leading the service as service chief for five of those years. He has served in academia, industry, private practice, marine mammal field research and as a marine mammal anesthesia specialist. Dr. Bailey has a long history in managing multi-disciplinary medical and research teams. He is currently the only veterinary anesthesiologist with experience in both sea lion and dolphin anesthesia, as well as experience with the APRV and AAV modes of ventilation. At FCVS Dr. Bailey is available for consultation and direct case management (you can often find him in the the FCVS operating room) and he also provides an ongoing level of training to FCVS staff that is unmatched in the field.
