Quackers has learned to love ice now. Tucker and Xena beg for ice from our fridge ice maker. Quackers has been carefully watching them and now realized she likes it too. Our little Magpie ducklings are almost grown. It's hard to think that they're not yet 3 months old. The older ducks are hard to tell from the ducklings now. We love the "Rachel ducklings" have a special place in our hearts with their little tufts of feathers sticking out from their heads. Such a cute and adorable little genetic trait.

Unicorns, every girls favorite toy on the farmyard!
Xena, our female German shepherd, is happily playing a fun game of keep away with Quackers. She loves to tease Quackers but also makes sure to slow down to allow Quackers to catch up. Gotta love the silliness that goes on at night at our little farmyard.

Little Richie's new diapers are here!!!
The design of these diapers is different from the ones you normally find online. These diapers do not go anywhere near the crop or throat. They also do not go through the legs of the chicken. They fit beautifully around the wings and under the tail. They have a great waterproof material lining on the inside that makes cleanup super easy. This diaper offers Little Richie the freedom to go anywhere in the house without fear of an accidental mess. This is just the first of several diapers that we will be ordering for Little Richie!

3:00am wake up calls!
Quakers loves to keep us on our toes. Since she's started laying eggs this week, she's decided that around 3:00am is her preferred time to lay. We didn't have her carrier in the bedroom last night, so she decided to yell at us at 3:00am to let her out of our room to get to her carrier. What a fun 3:00am wake up call. 😂

It is important to understand that chickens live in a hierarchy. They all challenge for the next level up and/or to prove themselves among the flock. This isn't limited to roosters either. Hens also participate in this behavior.
We wanted to show how this sort of hierarchy system can appear without allowing anyone to be harmed, even accidentally, in the process.

Quackers apparently would love to apply after enjoying his breakfast of champions, better known as the "fruit cup" menu item.
Quackers surprised all the employees this morning in drive-thru. He wanted to ensure I ordered correctly, so he was keeping a careful eye on the entire transaction from the passenger seat. I'm starting to think he's got a small addiction to Chick-fil-A at this point. 😂😂😂

Look how much they've grown!!
These are the duck hatchlings that arrived the two days after Thanksgiving. They have grown so much that they needed a much bigger brooder. Loving the new brooder box and the happy sounds coming from the little ones.
They are starting to get their first feathers in, but we still have a way to go before they're big enough to start spending time outdoors during the winter time. Cannot wait to see how many drakes and how many hens we end up with after they're fully feathered.

Please welcome, Little Richie!!
He's the newest member of the Simply Summers Farmyard. Little Richie is a Serama Rooster. It is a bantam breed of rooster that originated in Malaysia some time in the last 50 years or so. His max weight is slightly over a pound, and the max height he can hope to achieve is anywhere from 6-10 inches.
Surprisingly, the life span for a Serama chicken is up to 7+ years. Their egg production is that of most standard size chickens.
Little Richie is already making himself at home. Tucker has immediately decided that he wants to be best friends. Little Richie is not so sure about that proposal yet, though.

Jealousy at its finest with Quackers.
Poor Duplin just wanted to get some cuddle time on Mommy and Daddy's bed. Quackers vetoed that idea almost immediately. This was the third attempt at Duplin trying to get on the bed and subsequently being bullied off the bed.
Of all the things Quackers has mastered, sharing is not one of them. Guess that's gonna be our new 2023 goal for the year.

It looks like one of our Cinnamon Queens may be broody. Given her age, we're not so sure, but her behavior is right on the money for broodiness. We'll watch her and her nest over the next few days to see if she's continually sitting on her eggs or not.
