Life as a dog trainer… 🤍
#southernoregon #oregonboardandtrain #southernoregondogtrainer #gooddogs
Far too many videos online show kids and babies interacting with dogs in ways that are inappropriate and staged for views. These moments often lack boundaries, and it’s only a matter of time before something goes wrong. When a child pulls, yanks, slaps, or unintentionally hurts a dog, the dog may react instinctively—and guess who gets punished? The dog. We’ve all met someone who’s afraid of dogs because they got bitten as a kid.
Introducing kids to dogs too early—before they understand empathy, gentle touch, or how to respect boundaries—can set the stage for negative experiences on both sides. A child may feel scared or unsafe if a dog reacts unpredictably, and the dog may grow stressed or fearful from being mishandled. Kids are naturally erratic in their movements, which many dogs find unsettling. Add to that the fact that some dogs resource guard objects in ways many owners don’t notice, and the risks can escalate quickly.
So how do you build a healthy relationship between kids and dogs? Start by advocating for both your dog and your baby. Set clear boundaries early on, and don’t force interactions or create unnecessary hype around the baby. Teach kids how to behave around dogs, and when they’re old enough to understand the responsibility that comes with caring for one, their relationship will grow naturally and in a way that’s positive for everyone involved.
By giving both the child and the dog time to learn and respect each other’s boundaries, you’re setting them up for a safe, trusting relationship that lasts a lifetime.

Update on the lost dog: she was spotted today by a hunter. There are many eyes are on the lookout for her and we hope we can find her soon! Last spotted on the East Applegate Ridge Trail in Jacksonville. Black & tan mixed breed female young pup, goes by the name Millie but she’s a recent rescue & pretty shy.

Dogs like food and dogs like consistency. If you’re always calling your dog to come inside from the exciting outdoors, with no paycheck, then what’s the point of them listening?

Did you know it’s not always best for your dog to make friends with every pup they meet? Prioritizing your bond with your dog is essential, and for many, high-energy play can be too stimulating. Some dogs thrive by meeting our balanced demo dogs to practice calm, controlled socialization—and even recalling off play and other big distractions. Others, especially those who feel overwhelmed, benefit more from indirect socialization, building confidence from a safe distance.
Remember, socialization isn’t about constant play—it’s about creating positive, thoughtful experiences that empower your dog to be their best self!
Is your dog comfortable around other dogs, or would they do best with more indirect socialization?

Has been bring pregnant slowed me down from training dogs?
YES.
But that’s ok it just means I am more intentional with training sessions and my time management.
I can pretty much handle all dogs like the same as before, but the hard part is having the energy to actually train.
Nonetheless the dogs have to get worked so I just switch up my strategy & the dogs always adapt!
