Repeat after me:

✅ Dog training is supposed to be fun!
✅ Dog training is supposed to have variety!
✅ Dog training doesn’t have to be serious!

When working on impulse control, we always emphasize the 4 D’s of dog training: Duration, Distance, Distraction, and Difficulty. Each element builds on the last, and together, they help your dog become more reliable in different environments and situations.

Out of the four, Distraction training is my personal favorite! It’s also the most challenging to master, in my opinion. The real test comes when your dog can maintain focus despite distractions that public parks and children might break. We begin with simple distractions like clapping and stomping, gradually progressing to more intense challenges that includes noise, change in movement, and short bursts of activity. (Not heard is our attack helicopter noises 🤫😂)

It takes time and patience, but once your dog can tune out the chaos around them, it’s incredibly rewarding for both of you.

We train using the marker words "Yes" and "No." In this video, you'll see Cozart resist the temptation of a treat on the ground with just a simple "No" from one of our trainers, prompting him to move away. When Cozart first arrived, he had no impulse control, but his training has taught him that, even when his favorite toy is involved, he’s still expected to follow commands. Developing impulse control is a crucial part of training, as it helps dogs make better decisions and respond appropriately in various situations.

New Information On The “Hunger Gene” In Labs And Flat-Coats
By Caroline Coile

Researchers have unraveled more information about the genetic POMC mutation that makes some Labrador Retrievers perpetually hungry. For one, the mutation has an allele frequency of 12% in Labs and of 60% in Flat-Coated Retrievers. These are the only two breeds in which the mutation has been found despite surveying more than 40 other breeds.

Dogs with one copy of the mutated gene have increased weight, body condition score, and food motivation. Dogs with two copies of the mutated gene have even higher weight, body condition score, and food motivation.

Because only 4% of Labs are homozygous for (have two copies of) the mutated gene, no homozygous dogs were used in the study. In a comparison of wild type (no mutated POMC genes) and heterozygous (one mutated POMC gene) in which the dogs were allowed to eat as much as they wanted, the heterozygotes ate more than the wild type dogs, but the difference was not statistically significant. The wild types did regurgitate the huge meals significantly more, however...continue reading:

You've kept us booked and busy! Over the past two years, we've had the privilege of building an incredible community of animal lovers, and we're thankful for every moment of it.

You've kept us so busy that we ended up celebrating our 2-year anniversary on the 14th instead of the 1st! We were so caught up in the excitement and hustle that the days just flew by. But we wouldn't have it any other way!

Here's to many more years of wagging tails and happy memories together!

Do you have a dog over six months old that needs help learning good manners? Have you ever wished you could confidently take them out in public and trust that they would behave appropriately? Our 21-Day Board and Train program may be the perfect solution for you!

For just $2,300, which includes a non-refundable deposit of $500 to secure your spot and a remaining balance of $1,800 due at drop-off, you can provide your dog with an intensive training experience that will greatly enhance their behavior.

Our Board and Train programs are an excellent choice for dog owners with busy lifestyles, those who travel for work or vacation, and anyone who prefers to have their dog trained by professionals. While your pet stays at our comfortable, indoor, climate-controlled kennel facilities, they receive personalized training and ample attention, while also engaging in socialization and playtime with other dogs.

During their 21 day stay, your dog will be exposed to various stimuli, including socialization with different sounds (such as fireworks, gunshots, and car horns), as well as interactions with diverse people and animals. These experiences are designed to help your dog acclimate to the sights and sounds of everyday life.

We help them learn appropriate behaviors essential for real-world situations WITHOUT the use of an ecollar. Beyond behavior modification, which may include light separation anxiety or reactivity tailored to each dog’s individual needs, your dog will be trained in the following commands:

Sit
Down
Stay
Wait
Leave It
Off
Come When Called
Heel
Door Manners
Orbit
Crate Training
Impulse Control

Your dog will learn to respond promptly to commands the first time they are given, even in the presence of distractions, through proofing training during the Board and Train program. Additionally, we will address any behavioral issues you may be facing with your dog, such as jumping on people, rushing out the door, getting on furniture, counter surfing, barking, and pulling on the leash.

As part of the package, you will benefit from a one-hour follow up lesson, in addition to a private lesson at pickup, ensuring you understand how to reinforce the behaviors your dog has learned. You will also receive a complimentary six-week intermediate obedience class to further advance your dog's training.

Your dog will receive a minimum of 5.5 hours of one-on-one instruction each day, along with group sessions, playtime, and socialization opportunities. During the second and third weeks of training, your dog will embark on daily field trips to pet-friendly locations, both indoors and outdoors, to practice their skills in real-world settings.

For your dog's stay, we request that you provide enough food to last the duration of their time with us, a current copy of their vaccinations (including Bordetella), and any medications they may require. We accept various payment methods, including cash, credit cards, and Afterpay.

If you are interested in transforming your dog’s behavior and enhancing your relationship with them, do not hesitate to enroll in our 21-Day Board and Train program today!

These two gentle giants have had a blast playing together this week. I don't think either of them realizes how big they are, though Corbin does make Sun look small in comparison! 😂 One of the best things about boarding dogs is watching them form new friendships.

08/08/2024

Board and train Daisy went on her first field trip today. Despite being excited and a bit distracted, she managed to work through it beautifully. Whether you’re considering a board and train program or training your dog yourself, field trips are an essential part of the process.

Field trips to pet-friendly locations are crucial for several reasons:

1.Real-World Socialization: These trips expose dogs to a variety of environments, people, and other animals, helping them become well-rounded and adaptable.
2.Practical Training: Dogs learn to apply their training in real-life situations, reinforcing behaviors like recall, leash manners, and obedience amidst distractions.
3.Building Confidence: Exploring new places can boost a dog’s confidence, reducing anxiety and fear in unfamiliar settings.
4. Behavioral Assessment: Trainers can better assess and address specific behavioral issues that may not be evident in a controlled environment.
