From Valleys Dog Behaviour And Training

THIS IS A PSA

Puppies bite. They bite a lot. They bite hard. Their teeth are sharp. You might bleed. It might seem relentless.

Scaring the pants off them by yelling, pinning, shoving or shouting will not only do precisely zero, it will potentially create a fearful adult dog.

Puppies bite more when;
They are tired
They are hungry
They are bored
They are overstimulated
They are teething

Read that again. They bite MORE when they are the above. They will also bite when they are absolutely fine. They are dogs not dolls.

Be compassionate not scary. They will grow out of it but only if you teach them a good alternative. Trade for toys. Use a pen or a crate. Teach calmness. Reward gentle interactions. Grit your own teeth and ride it out while reinforcing good stuff and proactively managing bad stuff.

Be proactive when you know biting happens like after some play, when excitement goes up, when they are overtired (7-9pm witching hour anyone?) and give them a good chew or help them settle, or channel that energy into some training.

It does get better basically. Don’t panic. Most puppy biting isn’t aggression. Be CONSISTENT and PROACTIVE and expect more than a few bites along the way.

Aalto the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever (aka the ginger shark)

Sharing from another breeder who wrote a great explanation about the difference between a male and female dog. Please, remember it all depends on the individual puppy/dog’s personality. This is spoken in general terms:

Did you know there is a definite difference between a male dog and female dog?? Well, there truly is!

MALE vs. FEMALE: Does a male or a female make a better pet for you and your family?

It’s not uncommon for people to believe that a female dog will make a better pet. We get a lot of calls for people wanting that “special little girl”. For whatever reason they don’t think that females will exhibit “alpha” behaviors like hu***ng and/or marking. A lot of people think that females are more passive and friendly and that they don’t take part in fighting over dominance, which could NOT be farther from the truth. If you check out the structure of dog packs, the females determine the pecking order and rule the roost. The result of that behavior is that the females become more stubborn, independent, and territorial than the males. These females are much more intent on exercising their control by participating in that “alpha” behavior like hu***ng. Most fighting will usually break out between two females.

Males tend to be more affectionate, exuberant, attentive, and even more demanding of attention. The males are very attached to their owners, tending to be more dedicated, reliable and less temperamental. They are more sociable, more accepting of other pets, playful for years, and take quicker to children. Most boys are easily motivated by treats/food, words of praise and are so eager to please that training actually becomes easier. Their playful nature, however, can make males more easily distracted. The boys are more likely to act silly and more puppy-like, always wanting to play games, no matter what their age. The boys are fun-loving until the day they die, whereas girls tend to be more standoffish and dignified the older they get.

Neutered males rarely exhibit secondary sexual behavior such as marking and lifting their legs or hu***ng. Once the testosterone levels recede after neutering, most of these behaviors will disappear if they ever existed.

So before making your decision on that age old dilemma of male vs. female, hopefully this will give you some helpful info to think about.

100/10 recommend SEVO if your pet is dealing with cancer!

Lymphoma is one of the most common forms of canine cancer and affects the lymph
nodes, liver, spleen, and bone marrow.
The first symptom that dogs with lymphoma usually show is swollen lymph nodes.
Dogs with lymphoma may also develop lethargy, fever, anorexia, weakness, and
dehydration as the disease progresses. Awareness of symptoms can help catch
serious diseases like lymphoma earlier which often leads to a better prognosis.
Always notify your primary care veterinarian if your pet exhibits unusual symptoms.
If your veterinarian suspects that your pet may have cancer, they may refer you to
an oncology specialist for advanced diagnostics and further treatment.
Treating here at SEVO amongst board certified oncologist, whose mission it is to give your pet the best quality of care and life throughout this trying time.

The Fruits exceeded all expectations this weekend! 🍑💜🥭💙

We had 4 Rally trials over two days and both dogs really showed how awesome they can be (and also where we need some more work…). It was rainy and humid one day and sunny and hot the next - but they kept it together and came to win 🥇

Here are the final stats:
🍑 Peach - 4 qualifying runs, earned her AKC Rally Intermediate title, 1 first place (in her first ever Advanced run!), 3 fourth places (she always makes the podium 😉)

🥭 Mango - 4 qualifying runs, earned his AKC Rally Intermediate title, 2 first place runs (one of them being his first Advanced run!)

We had fun, met new dog people, hung out with some of our favorite local dog people, and the competition was solid!

If you’re interested in dog sports and want to start in a fun way, Rally might be the perfect fit 🐾

🐾 VERY IMPORTANT POST 🐾

This is a hard announcement for me to make, but it comes from a place of listening to client needs, past and future, meeting my own dogs training needs, and doing what is best for my family at the moment.

As of September 1, 2022, Whoa Nellie! Positive Canine Training LLC will no longer be offering stand alone training services (private lesson, day training, group classes) or Training Camps.

As I have evolved and changed my business over the past years, I have found that my clients are looking for a safe place to board their dog when they cannot be with them. This is how Mango’s Dog Boarding was formed.

I started Mango’s with the plan to offer board and train only, but all my dog owner’s told me where to go. Boarding was the most requested service by far, so I reevaluated and pivoted my plan to meet the need.

Mango’s Dog Boarding will be our primary focus with Whoa Nellie helping with add on training in the background. I (Sam) will still be running everything and providing the best care possible to your dogs.

Our boarding services have the option to add on additional services during your dog’s stay.
❌Add on training is not for teaching new behaviors/skills, dealing with nuisance behaviors, or fixing problems.
✅ Add on training is for reinforcing known skills, practicing skills in new locations (on field trips), and expanding skills in known environments.

If you need the help of a trainer - please let me know, I can refer you to someone locally who can help

If you are a trainer - I would love to help your client’s dogs practice while they are being boarded

If your dog needs a place to stay - Mango’s is here for you

We will only be offering online scheduling, so head to and click the link in the bio to schedule.

I am so thankful for all my previous and current clients and all your dogs! You have all helped to make Mango’s a reality in one way or another.

Please reach out with any questions you may have. I’m always here to help you and your dog and give them a fun place to stay when they can’t be with you 🐾

Playtime is the best time at Mango’s Dog Boarding! But…

Did you know that we have 2 acres of fenced yard for your dog to run and play in?!

Did you know that we are on site 24/7 with the dogs?!

Did you know that the dogs get a late evening bathroom break before bed?!

All these things make us different than the typical boarding facility!

Although your dog may not stay in our house, just know their AC is set cooler than ours 😅 and they are getting plenty of play, attention, and top notch care!

Did you know that we are now offering online reservations?! Book Now by heading to and clicking the link in our profile

Meet our Employee of the Month - Peach 🍑

In a tight race against Mango, Peach narrowly won this coveted title 🏆

Here are a few reasons why she earned Employee of the Month:

🐾 She is everyone’s best friend - she knows how to get the party started or kick back and relax with the other dogs

🐾 She is our resident fitness instructor - sprinting is her favorite activity & makes sure your dog gets their steps in

🐾 She is always willing to show other dogs how it’s done - whether it’s standing nicely on the grooming table, taking a treat politely, or waiting her turn at the gate, Peach is a great leader

Please help us in congratulating Peach on her Employee of the Month victory 👏🏼

Giving dogs a safe & fun vacation is the dream come true for me 🐾

Having our regular dogs who know the routine and get excited when they turn on our street is what it’s all about!

Gracie & Josey are both Training Camp graduates, Day Campers, & Boarding Campers. They love staying with us and we love having them 🐾

Dogs thrive with consistency and clear expectations - both of which they will get while staying with us. We want their stay to be an extension of their life at home

Because we are a small facility that offers more one on one attention, our availability is limited. Don’t wait to get your dog scheduled for Fall & the Holidays. Spots are already filling up! Email us today to get your dog’s vacation scheduled
