Thankful to be a part of such great changes happening in our community.
BE PART OF THE SOLUTION! 🙌🏻
June has officially came to an end and that means we are HALFWAY through 2024. With this set of data, we wanted to also limelight some awesome Animal Welfare Partners that help with caring for the animals in the community.
〽️Paws 4 Purpose completed 423 cats and helped 97 individuals through their TNVR (trap-neuter-vaccinate-return) program. This program ensures that cat populations are fixed so we can reduce the cat overpopulation issue in Onslow County. If you are interested in their services, read more on our website and fill out the request form here: https://www.onslowcountync.gov/2273/Community-Cat-Resources
〽️Adoption First Veterinary Clinic completed 2,006 cat and 1,159 dog spay/neuter surgeries. Adoption First Veterinary Clinic provides low-cost spay/neuter surgeries to our community and assists with the TNVR program. If you are wanting to get your pet fixed, visit their website at: https://adoptionfirstanimalrescue.com/vet-clinic/
While we each do something different in Animal Welfare, our goal is common - reduce the overpopulation and provide safe, humane, loving homes for companion animals in our community. Since both of these organizations have partnered with OCAS, our cat intake has declined drastically! See the previous June intakes:
-2024: 98✴️
-2023: 287
-2022: 189
-2021: 240
-2020: 336
With a decrease in cat intakes, the cats that we see are typically the most vulnerable population (bottle babies, kittens under 8 weeks, sick or injured cats/kittens) or healthy, friendly strays. However, even with the change in the population that we have seen, our live release rates for cats have also drastically changed for the positive. This is due to the implementation of our wonderful TNVR partnership and expansion of our Foster Program. See the previous June live release rates:
-2024: 75%✴️
-2023: 64.47%
-2022: 60.71%
-2021: 28.57%
-2020: 37.26%
Next, we wanted to talk about some community services we provide to the public!
〽️ Our Animal Control Officers (ACO's) respond to all animal control calls for Onslow County. In the month of June, our officers responded, contacted, or assisted with 901 calls for service. These calls encompass cruelty investigations, nuisance calls, stray pickup requests, rabies and bite quarantine calls, and so many other reasons.
〽️ At the shelter, we provide multiple services but one is our low-cost Rabies vaccine clinic. This clinic is held weekly and is a walk-in clinic on Wednesdays from 1pm-4pm. All dogs, cats, and ferrets over 4 months of age are required to be up to date on their rabies vaccine.
While we look at all of these numbers, please remember that this all takes hard work, dedication, compassion, and teamwork from not just OCAS but the partnerships and programs built within the community. We cannot do the work that we are doing without the people in the community helping, so we thank you for your help in reaching the goals that we have as an organization!
