As dog training is gaining popularity, it seems like I’m running more and more into “experts” of the canine species.
YouTube trainers, new trainers teaching other trainers, and the amount of online dog training courses folks can buy. All these sources are feeding consumers with “I know it all” knowledge. Most of these teachings only scratch the surface or maybe just teach outdated information.
The animal husbandry field is always evolving. New ideas, good ideas, and even bad ideas are being taught daily. It’s a career you will never fully master.
Heck, I’m personally driving across the country to go learn more and I’ve been working professionally with animals for 10 years.
So back to my original thought, these experts I’m running into who ask myself or colleagues for help with their dog. These guys will dismiss any information provided and give us the solution they have come up with that will help their dog.
“Just make my dog do obedience commands when he or she is excited.”
“Just correct the dog for acting out.”
“Just let the dog play with others for socialization.”
Etc.
While yes we can do all the above suggestions, why would we?
None of those touch the emotional being part of the dog.
It’s a bandaid for a bandaid that is a gaping wound.
So our training process and some of our colleagues’ process probably looks different from what you have seen online.
And that’s okay.
It’s about the well-being of your furry friend. It’s about providing your dog with the best life they can achieve and teaching you how to work the reins.
Not all training is created equal, so find the style that fits yours and your dog’s life.
And for the love of dogs, stop being an expert and become a student. 🌱
