Now that Sasha has completed her heartworm treatment and recovered beautifully from surgery, she’s ready to spend this holiday season in a loving home. Whether it’s temporary or forever, we’re hoping to find Sasha a cozy spot where she can finally be the center of attention—no kennels, no crowds, just love.

Sasha would love a home where she’s the only pet, and fostering her for 7-14 days (based on your availability) could give her the Christmas she’s never had before. We’ll take care of everything—food, crate, and all the supplies you need. All you have to do is open your heart and your home to make her holiday dreams come true.

Dear Friends,

We’re reaching out with heavy hearts to ask for your help. Sasha, one of the sweetest and most resilient dogs we’ve ever had the privilege to care for, is in a fight for her life.

When we rescued Sasha from the county shelter, she was heartworm positive and had no chance of receiving treatment there. We couldn’t let her story end that way, so we stepped in, committed to giving her the care she needed to survive. After months of hard work and treatment, Sasha finished her last heartworm injection on November 21st. Her recovery was going beautifully, and we were so hopeful that she was finally on her way to the happy, healthy future she deserves.

But this weekend, everything changed. Sasha suddenly became lethargic and started vomiting. After rushing her to the vet, X-rays revealed what the doctors suspect is a foreign body in her digestive system. Exploratory surgery is the only way to save her. Right now, she’s on IV fluids to stabilize her, but the cost of surgery is more than we can handle on our own.

We’ve done everything we can to care for Sasha and keep her safe, but despite all our attentiveness, something must have slipped through. We feel so defeated and guilty to see her in this situation after all the progress she’s made. But we love her so much, and we made a promise to save her life. We can’t give up on her now.

Sasha has already fought so hard, and we’re asking for your help to give her the chance she deserves. If you can, please donate or share her story. Every dollar brings us closer to giving Sasha the life she’s fought so hard for.

Please Help Me Save Sasha 💔

I don’t even know how to start this, but I feel so defeated right now. Sasha has been through so much already—her heartworm treatment was grueling, but she powered through it like the fighter she is. I’ve done everything I can to care for her and keep her safe, but despite all my attentiveness, I must have missed something. This weekend, she started vomiting and became really lethargic. I rushed her to the vet, and now they suspect she has a foreign body and needs emergency surgery to survive.

I feel so guilty that this happened after all the work we’ve done to get her healthy. I’ve been trying so hard, but it’s devastating to end up in this situation after everything. Still, I can’t give up on her now. I love her too much, and I made a commitment to save her life when I pulled her from the shelter.

Sasha is on IV fluids right now while I try to figure out how to afford the surgery. I hate asking for help over and over, but I cannot afford over $9,000 in vet bills.

I first met Sasha a few days ago when I visited the county shelter to give a dog a break from the stress of being confined 24/7. Sasha immediately caught my attention, and when I asked the staff about her, they told me she was in desperate need of a day out. Despite being on medication to manage her anxiety, the stress of the shelter had taken such a toll that she had stopped eating and was rapidly losing weight.

As I learned more about Sasha, I discovered she’s been at the shelter for nearly four months and is suffering from advanced heartworm disease. Her thoracic radiographs reveal a severely dilated pulmonary artery and significantly enlarged, tortuous pulmonary vessels. In simpler terms, the heartworm is so advanced that it’s causing her heart and lungs to fail. Unfortunately, because the shelter isn’t equipped to handle her severe condition, she hasn’t even begun treatment.

Needless to say, I couldn’t leave Sasha there. I initially planned to foster her for just a few days to give her a chance to decompress and hopefully start feeling a little better. But what I saw when I got her home was heartbreaking. Sasha is severely fatigued, her abdomen is swollen, she’s frighteningly underweight, and she faints often due to the lack of oxygen her body is receiving.

After just two days with Sasha, I knew I couldn’t send her back to the shelter where she’d continue to deteriorate without treatment. So, here we are! Sasha is now staying with us for the time being. With the support of an incredible client and friend, along with the Friends of Jacksonville Animals organization, we’re hopeful we can start her heartworm treatment soon.

While I’m relieved Sasha doesn’t have to return to the shelter, I’m also worried about covering the costs of her ongoing care. If, like me, you believe Sasha deserves a chance to experience love and proper care, I’d be incredibly grateful for your support.

With nearly a decade of experience in veterinary care, my profound passion for understanding animal behavior led me to pursue a master’s degree in Anthrozoology—a field that explores the intricate relationships between humans and animals, blending anthropology, veterinary medicine, and psychology, and deeply resonates with my work at Golden Standard Pet Services.

Certified in Professional Canine Obedience and Behavior Modification from Tarheel K9 Training, and with over 10 years of hands-on experience rehabilitating dogs in animal rescue, I have developed a deep understanding of how an animal’s background, genetics, and environment influence their information processing and learning. This knowledge has motivated and empowered me to specialize in applying advanced behavioral training techniques that are uniquely tailored to meet the individual needs of each pet.
