🍂 A Heartfelt Thank You This Thanksgiving 🧡
As we gather around our tables this Thanksgiving, we find ourselves reflecting on all that we're grateful for—and at the top of that list is YOU, our incredible clients and the precious pets you've entrusted to our care.
Thank you for choosing us to be part of your pet's healthcare journey. Whether it's routine wellness visits, those middle-of-the-night emergencies, celebrating the good news, or holding your hand through the difficult moments—it is an honor and a privilege to care for the furry family members who mean so much to you.

To our amazing clients: You make this work meaningful. Your love for your pets inspires us, and your partnership in their care reminds us why we chose this calling.
From our family to yours—both two-legged and four-legged—we wish you a Thanksgiving filled with love, laughter, warmth, and maybe a few sneaky table scraps for those begging eyes under the dinner table. 😉
Happy Thanksgiving! 🦃🐾

The Curious Case of Sampson's Sneaky Snack 🌽
Meet Sampson: a 20-month-old, 154-pound St. Bernard who recently taught us all a very important lesson about corn on the cob.
Sampson came into our clinic doing the dry heave shuffle—you know the one. His worried pet parents had no idea what could be causing the problem. So we did what we do best: took some x-rays to investigate.
What did we find? Inflamed, gassy intestines and some mysterious "matter" that had us scratching our heads. Classic signs of "I ate something I definitely should not have eaten."
But WHAT was it?
Plot twist: When Sampson's family got home, the kids confessed. They'd shared their corn on the cob with their giant, lovable best friend. Mystery solved! That "matter" we saw? Yep—a whole corn cob, taking up residence where it absolutely should not be.
Off to the ER Sampson went, where surgery successfully evicted the cob from its unauthorized location. The good news? Sampson is recovering beautifully at home and will make a full recovery!
Here's the thing: This isn't just a "big dog" problem. We've seen tiny dogs inhale corn cobs like competitive eaters. Size doesn't matter when it comes to poor decision-making around food.
The moral of the story? Corn on the cob and dogs DO NOT MIX. The cob can cause serious intestinal blockages that require emergency surgery.
So please, JUST DON'T GIVE IT TO THEM. No matter how much those puppy eyes beg. 🐾

🦃 TURKEY ISN'T THE ONLY THING GETTING ROASTED THIS THANKSGIVING... 🐕
Let's talk about that one family member who ALWAYS tries to steal food from the table. You know the one. Four legs, zero impulse control, and a talent for looking innocent while committing crimes. 😅
Every year, emergency vets see a spike in pet poisonings during Thanksgiving—and it's not because our furry friends have bad intentions. It's because our holiday table is basically a buffet of things that can seriously harm them.
From chocolate desserts to fatty turkey skin, onion-loaded stuffing to that conveniently low wine glass... there are more dangers lurking at Thanksgiving dinner than most pet parents realize.
The good news? Most pets recover fully when their humans act FAST. ⚡
The bad news? You need to know what to do BEFORE your Labrador inhales half a pecan pie.
Because trust me—you don't want to be Googling "can dogs eat [insert disaster here]" while your pup gives you the "I regret nothing" face.
SHARE THIS with every pet parent you know! Your share could literally save a life this holiday. 💚
Drop a 🦃 in the comments if your pet has ever stolen Thanksgiving food—let's hear those stories! 👇

🦃 ATTENTION PET PARENTS: Put down that plate!
Before Aunt Susan sneaks your dog a "little piece" of stuffing, you need to see this. 👀
I made a guide to what pets can ACTUALLY eat on Thanksgiving (and what will send you to the emergency vet at 9 PM while everyone else is watching football).
Spoiler: Your dog does NOT need buttered mashed potatoes, no matter how convincing those puppy eyes are. 🐕😭
👉 Swipe through, save this post, and share it with anyone hosting pets this Thursday!
Trust me—your future self (and your wallet) will thank you. 💰

🐾 ATTENTION PET PARENTS! 🐾
Your furry friends are basically tick magnets, and yes, we DO have ticks here (looking at you, person who said "ticks aren't a Florida problem"). Spoiler alert: They absolutely are. 😅
The Lineup of Tick-Borne Nasties in Our Area:
🦟 Lyme Disease - The famous one. Causes that bullseye rash in humans, lameness and fever in dogs. It's like the headliner of a concert nobody wanted tickets to.
🦟 Ehrlichiosis - Makes pets (and people!) feel like they have the worst flu ever. Fever, lethargy, loss of appetite. Zero stars, would not recommend.
🦟 Anaplasmosis - Similar vibes to Ehrlichiosis. Your dog acts like they got hit by a truck, minus the actual truck.
🦟 Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever - Despite the name, it's definitely here in Florida being dramatic. Can be serious for both pets and humans.
Here's the plot twist: Many tick diseases can jump from your pet to YOU. So protecting Fluffy isn't just about Fluffy—it's about your whole household!
What to do:
✅ Year-round tick prevention (yes, YEAR-ROUND—this is Florida, we don't do winter)
✅ Check your pets after walks, especially around ears, between toes, and under collars
✅ Talk to your us about the best preventatives for your dog
✅ Keep your yard maintained—tall grass is basically a tick hotel
Found a tick? Remove it with tweezers, save it in a sealed bag (your vet might want to ID it), and watch for symptoms.
Don't let these freeloaders hitch a ride on your best friend! 🐶🐱💚

Weekend well spent! Our Office Manager Susan and Dr. Williams headed to beautiful St. Petersburg for a GRO Leadership Conference and even checked off a bucket-list stay at The Vinoy. We connected with incredible colleagues from independently owned practices across the country and learned a ton about leadership, communication, and keeping our clinic running smoothly (without too many cat-tastrophes 😄).

We’re excited to bring fresh ideas back to Deerwood Animal Clinic and keep growing, improving, and occasionally laughing at ourselves along the way. Can’t wait to share everything we learned with our amazing team!

We are thrilled to introduce our newest veterinarian, Dr. Ashley Benson!
Dr. Benson brings her fresh perspective and love of animals to our practice. Originally from Carroll County, Maryland, she earned both her bachelor's and master's degrees from Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA. Before pursuing her dream of becoming a veterinarian, Dr. Benson worked in an animal histopathology lab and shared her passion for science as an adjunct anatomy and physiology professor at a community college.
Dr. Benson completed her veterinary studies at the University of Florida (Go Gators! 🐊) and has since made Jacksonville her home with her husband and two children.
When she's not caring for your beloved pets, you might find Dr. Benson cheering on her favorite sports teams, baking up something delicious, planning her next travel adventure, or exploring underwater through scuba diving!
We're so excited to have Dr. Benson as part of our family and know your pets will be in excellent hands. Please join us in giving her a warm welcome!

💛 Happy World Kindness Day! 💛
Let's be honest—our pets wrote the book on kindness! 📖🐾
Dogs greet us like we've been gone for YEARS (even if we just took out the trash). Cats... well, they show kindness in their own special way—like leaving us that one spot on the couch, or the occasional slow blink that says "you're tolerated." 😺
Today, let's take a page from our furry friends' playbook:
✨ Give unconditional love (like your dog does)
✨ Be present in the moment (like your cat in a sunbeam)
✨ Offer comfort without words (like a purr or a paw on your lap)
✨ Forgive quickly (treats help with this one! 🦴)
Our pets remind us every single day that the simplest acts of kindness—a wagging tail, a head nudge, a cuddle on the couch—make the biggest difference.
So go ahead: give your pet an extra treat, an extra belly rub, or an extra "good boy/girl" today. And maybe spread a little of that furry kindness to the humans in your life too! 🐶🐱💕

When you're trying to check in patients but your furry coworker has other plans 🐱
Megan thought her job was answering phones and scheduling appointments, but Sanford is here to remind her that HIS needs come first. Phone ringing? Too bad. Someone at the front desk? They can wait. It's Sanford O'Clock.
That expression says "Yes, I'm aware there are clients waiting. No, I don't care. Hold me."
Megan's mastered the art of typing with one hand, answering phones with her shoulder, and keeping the clinic running while being used as a cat tree. It's a skill they don't teach in receptionist training.
