Update on Buddy’s reactivity training! Remember, slow and steady. We always want to set up a dog for success, which means that you never want to rush the process. On day one he was barking and lunging at the presence of other dogs in crates, and at the first sign of them on walks. Now he’s able to engage with me in the presence of other neutral dogs. We will continue to work with him and increase the challenges as he tolerates, but he absolutely loves the work. Behavior modification, Sparknotes Edition 🤣 I tried to condense this video as much as possible, because let’s be honest, I could talk about reactivity training for hours. But I wanted to share Buddy’s case with you guys and talk a little bit about reactivity training and muzzle conditioning in general. Buddy is here with us for 20 days, and his training is going to look very different from the others you have seen. Why is that? You don’t fix behavior with obedience. Obedience is what you’re telling your dog to do. Behavior is what your dog chooses to do on their own accord. What we want to do is reward him for making correct choices in the presence of triggers. I won’t care so much that he’s maintaining a perfect heel. I won’t ask him to get into a stable position while a trigger approaches. But what I will reward is him disengaging with a trigger and choosing to engage with me instead. Now yes, we’re still going to work on some obedience, because as stated in the video, he’s being told what to do for the first time in his life. We need to be able to manage that too, so his owner can have a polite dog on her hands as well. But a lot of our walks and sessions around those triggers(in his case, other dogs) aren’t going to look fancy. Just because a dog *can* maintain a down-stay or a place in the presence of a trigger, does not mean that it’s not still a trigger in the first place. Obedience can create a lot of false-positives for owners, because things can be going great, until suddenly they’re not. Our goal is to make him more confident and comfortable in the presence of triggers. Masking that with obedience will create a dog that looks obedient on the outside, but will still create an insecure dog who hates that trigger on the inside. Decided to make this a full reel along with adding it to my story. Milo’s biggest struggle since day one has always been impulse control and reactivity. He struggles with being OVERLY friendly and tends to ignore social cues and corrections from other dogs, which can lead to much larger problems such as fights. Here we’re working on making the correct choices around those distractions, because Milo shouldn’t be greeting every dog that he sees. This is because it can heighten reactivity and build frustration, which can become a nightmare for his owner. So at the end of the video, you can hear me say that I’m going in to reward him, but I’m not releasing him from that position. I closed the gate, walked back towards the house, and released him there. It’s rewarding him for making those correct decisions, but I also didn’t give him the opportunity to make the wrong one. After all, a release essentially gives the dog freedom to do as they wish at that point. I couldn’t necessarily fault him for running towards the dogs if I released him in the position he was in.
