Birch Island Veterinary Center

Birch Island Veterinary Center We offer full medical, surgical and dental care as well as boarding, daycare & grooming. We also offer training onsite at various times of the year.

Opened in 2018, Birch Island Veterinary Center is a long-time dream for our lead doctor Deanna Greer, who has been a Jacksonville native for over 15 years, and a veterinarian for over 20 years! It has grown to include four veterinarians and a large support staff of wonderful, compassionate, dedicated team members. Our practice strives to be the home away from home for your dogs, cats, rabbits and

small animal family members (including guinea pigs, hamsters, rats, mice, hedgehogs, sugar gliders, chinchillas & ferrets). We offer full medical, surgical and dental care as well as boarding, day care & grooming services. Our facility was designed from the ground-up to eliminate fear, anxiety, and stress and values the emotional state of our patients as much as their physical health. We have separate entrances, waiting rooms, and exam rooms for dogs vs cats, as well as slip-free surfaces and alternate exam locations to make your pet's experience as comfortable as possible. Our veterinarians, managers, techs, groomers, receptionists & resort staff all work together to provide your fur family the best possible care and attention. Please feel free to call us at 904-717-6840 for more information or stop by to meet some of our team in person. We offer tours of the resort & spa!

⭐️ COURTESY POST:

Taz is an adorable 4-year old spayed lab/hound/pittie mix who needs a new home. Unfortunately, her owner suffered significant injuries after a fall and a family member has been caring for Taz since. It’s been discovered that Taz has an affinity for chasing cats so she cannot stay where she is. Current on vaccines, microchipped and food motivated, Taz is a loving, goofy girl who enjoys walks, chasing lizards and spending time with her humans. She spent her first few years as an only dog and would prefer to keep it that way. She may do okay with a non-dominant dog of similar size but she’s fairly strong-willed so won’t pair well with another of the same nature. Taz has a lot of energy but listens well to commands and is good on a leash. She has been through formal obedience training and has a willingness to continue learning.

For more information or to meet this sweet gal, please call or text Kirsten at 904-509-3834. She will be checking vet references and asking a rehoming fee to ensure Taz goes to a wonderful, responsible family.

*️⃣ Taz is not at Birch Island. We are posting on behalf of the person who has her.

THEY SAID “I DO” TO A BIRCH ISLAND WEDDING! 💍

Congratulations to happy couple Casey & Sara who got married at Birch Island last night! Yes, this was a first for us and we had a blast being part of the festivities!! With their dogs by their side, these two longtime clients opted for a small ceremony with a handful of friends & family which included several staff members. It was such a fun evening of love & laughs with some special personal touches (including a handmade cake just for the dog wedding party)🩷.

Wishing Casey & Sara a lifetime of joy! Thank you for letting us celebrate with you!!

⭐️ COURTESY POST ⭐️

This handsome fellow is Diesel and he needs a new home. A very smart, sweet guy, Diesel enjoys cuddling, lounging on the couch & walks with his humans. He is 6 years old, neutered, crate trained, well-behaved, housebroken and current on vaccines. Diesel needs to be the only pet in the home and would do best with older kiddos. His current family’s circumstances have become such that they can no longer keep him and they hope to find him a wonderful forever home where he’ll continue to be spoiled. He will come with all of his belongings & medical records. For more info or to meet Diesel, please contact Elizabeth at 614-373-8948.

❄️ PLEASE NOTE ❄️

WE’LL BE OPEN AND STAYING WARM

With this unusually cold weather making its way toward us, we want to reassure you that we will be open and operating as normal. Our building and all of its systems are checked regularly and our patients, resort guests, clients & staff will be safe and warm inside. Plus, many of our team members (including Dr. Dee) are northern transplants and no strangers to these incoming conditions. We are prepared.

Please stay safe over the next few days. Follow any restrictions or guidelines given to you by the county and keep your pets from any prolonged exposure to frigid temperatures. Keep them inside as much as possible and monitor their whereabouts closely. Smaller breeds, older pets, medically compromised or those with thin coats are especially vulnerable to the cold. Once outdoor temps dip below 32 degrees, hypothermia can set in fairly quickly. Signs include shivering, shallow breathing, pale gums & lethargy. Seek veterinary help immediately if you have concerns this has occurred.

Please call us with any questions or concerns at 904-717-6840.

I NEED A HOME

This gorgeous green-eyed gal came to us as a stray and is now ready for a cozy home to call her own. About 6 months old and named Whiskers by our staff, she’s been spayed, vaccinated, combo tested & dewormed. Her personality is full of affection, silly head butts & so much love. She’s worked her way into all of our hearts and that is why we want to see her find a purr-fect family. Whiskers did have an issue with her tushie (a pr*****ed re**um) but it has been surgically corrected and she’s been doing great. Our staff can discuss this further with you.

Her adoption fee is $75 to help cover some of the costs of the care she’s received and to ensure she goes to a good home. To meet Whiskers, please stop by 14485 Philips Highway in Jacksonville or call us for more info at 904-717-6840.

Today is National Labrador Retriever Day!

One of the most popular breeds in the country, Labrador Retrievers are known for their friendliness, loyalty & intelligence. Originating in Newfoundland in the 1800s, they were established through British working breeds to help fishermen retrieve nets from cold water. Their thick double coat, webbed toes, and rudder-like tail made them ideal water dogs and still do.

A larger-sized breed weighing an average of 60-75 lb (males are bigger), Labradors can be found in black, chocolate & yellow. (More recently, some breeders have developed colors like white, silver & charcoal). With their gentle, affectionate personalities, they make great family pets as well as wonderful therapy dogs. Active and highly trainable, Labs also excel in search-and-rescue, agility and sporting activities. Regular exercise and mental stimulation is required to keep them happy & engaged and routine brushing keeps their coats healthy.

Have a Lab and want to share their pic? Please do so in the comments!

Looking to add one to the family? Consider adoption! Labrador Retriever Rescue of Florida - District 4 Jacksonville is a great resource plus many of our shelters often have Labs and Lab mixes 🐾

We collected almost two carloads of toys, treats, leashes, collars, beds & other supplies 🐾

We will be stopping collections for now but will let you know when our next donation drive will be! Thank you again!!!!

PET PARENTS / NYE SAFETY:

New Year’s Eve can be fun for us but scary for our pets. Many animals get lost or injured during the festivities, so please keep them safe tonight. Here are some tips to help:

⭐️ Make sure your pets have identification with up-to-date information. If your pets are microchipped, make sure your contact information in the registry is current. Consider putting a colllar with an ID tag on your dog or cat today even if they don’t normally wear one.

⭐️ Take a current photo of all of your pets just in case they do escape and you need to post pics.

⭐️ Check the perimeters of your outside spaces to confirm they are safe and secure. If your neighbors set off fireworks at an unexpected time, make sure that your yard is escape-proof so that your pets are contained. Keep gates closed & locked and block any possible holes or compromised areas.

⭐️ Unless you are 💯 certain your dog is ok with noises & crowds, leave them at home if you go to parties, fireworks displays or other gatherings. Loud pops/bangs, unfamiliar places and strangers can all be frightening to many dogs, and there's a significant risk of them becoming spooked and running away.

⭐️ Consider putting your pets in a safe, secure room or crate during parties and fireworks. Provide cozy blankets and soft music if available. Give dogs a distracting chew toy like a peanut-butter filled Kong or other long-lasting treat.

⭐️ If you're hosting guests, ask them to help keep an eye on your pets to make sure they don’t escape. Placing notes on exit doors and gates can help both you and your guests remain vigilant.

⭐️ Keep your pets inside if you or your neighbors are setting off fireworks.
Keep sparklers, glow sticks, fireworks and BBQ items like charcoal, kabob skewers & fatty or harmful foods away from curious pets.

⭐️ Check your yard for any firework debris before letting your pet out to play or potty. Even if you didn’t light them, others in your neighborhood may have and debris can end up by you.

Whatever your opinion on fireworks is, just keep in mind that our pets generally aren’t fans (neither are wildlife). Please be safe, diligent, respectful & responsible ❤️

Rooted In Kindness

Birch Island Veterinary Center opened its doors in November 2018. Dr. Deanna Greer (aka Dee) had the vision to create a beautiful, state-of-the-art space dedicated to exceptional care of our community’s pets. Named after a quaint island in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York where Dee spent many memorable Summers, Birch Island Veterinary Center was designed to share that same sense of calm, comfort & welcoming. Becoming the first fully certified Fear-Free animal hospital in Jacksonville helped us further achieve that mission. We offer complete veterinary care, boarding, daycare and grooming for dogs, cats, rabbits and other furry friends in a stress-free environment with added focus on your pet’s emotional wellbeing as well as their physical health.
