FFFF! Cats would prefer not to watch what is going on around them most of the time when they are in carriers. If they are more relaxed during their travel to/from the vet, they are more likely to have a positive vet experience overall. 😺😺

When traveling with your cat, cover the carrier with a towel or blanket to block the view of the changing surroundings. This will help reduce stress and make your cat feel safer. For more travel tips, visit https://bit.ly/3HILZAE.

FFFF! Letting the vet and staff know about any changes to your cat's appetite/behavior can be helpful. Cats always lie and say they are fine, even when they aren't, so tipping off your vet staff can help us find hidden or subtle problems. 😼😼

During an annual checkup, let your veterinarian know if your cat’s eating patterns have changed. Make a list of information, concerns, and questions to share. You may not recognize some behavior changes as significant because they are subtle or minor. However, when your veterinarian takes a thorough patient history, these changes may help uncover hidden issues. Learn more at https://bit.ly/48sSVOw.

FFFF! People get wrapped up in "shots due", and that is important, but the most important part of your cat's annual visit is his/her physical exam to try to catch problems early so that they can be dealt with before they harm your cat. 😺😺😺

Your cat needs regular preventive check-ups to remain happy and healthy. Veterinarians can detect conditions that may affect your cat’s health long before they become noticeable. During an exam, your veterinarian will assess your cat’s nutrition, lifestyle, environmental enrichment, disease and parasite prevention, and behavior. Learn more at https://bit.ly/48sSVOw.

Thinking about adding a cat to your existing feline clowder? Be sure to check out this handout which gives advice on reducing stress and creating positive interactions. Never just throw cats together and let them "work it out".

Introducing a new cat to your household can be a challenge when there is another cat present. Behavior modification techniques can help cats learn more relaxed and desirable behaviors. Once behavior modification is implemented, it can help reduce intercat tension by redirecting cats and rewarding more appropriate and relaxed behaviors. FFFF! Allowing your cat to start smelling your new baby before he/she comes home will help prepare the kitty for a better reception of your newborn. Pheromone sprays and plug ins can help as well. Cats are extremely sensitive to smells, and new ones can be very stress-inducing for them. πŸ™€πŸ˜ΈπŸ™€

Scent is the most important sense for all cats. This heightened sense plays an important role when bringing home a new baby. Before you bring your new bundle of joy home, take a baby blanket that smells like the newborn from the hospital for the cat to smell. This will help your cat get used to the baby’s smell. Want to make vet visits less stressful for your cat (and you)? Leave the carrier out in full sight year-round and follow these simple steps. This won't make them love the vet's office, but it should help them to be *less* stressed when they have to come see me. Also for fearful cats, we have a few options on anxiety meds to help them have a better visit. 😺😺

Visits to the veterinarian are an important part of caring for your cat. However, putting your cat in a carrier and traveling with them to and from the veterinary practice can be stressful for you and your cat. Thankfully, there are many ways to make the visit more pleasant. Check out our β€œCarrier Training in Six Simple Steps” infographic for tips on making your next veterinarian visit less stressful for you and your cat. FFFF! Not all cats get along with one another. 😺😻😺 Signs that your cats DO usually like one another include these:

How can you be sure your cats are getting along? If they groom each other, sleep in close contact together, approach each other with tails up, touch noses or rub heads, engage in mutual play by taking turns chasing each other, or if either cat initiates interaction, they just might be friends. Current plans with regard to Debby: We plan to be closed on Wednesday and Thursday. All previously scheduled appointments have been called and rescheduled. IF there is power and internet, we plan to be open on Friday. If there is no power/internet, we will remain closed until Monday. Unfortunately with no generator at the clinic, we can't turn on room lights for visibility and our practice management software is cloud-based so we can't open records or do any sort of invoicing without internet. Hopefully everyone will stay safe, and we'll see you on the other side of this weather. 😺😺😺

FFFF! Cats have a particularly keen sense of smell and use scents of different types to mark their territory and to make themselves feel comfortable. 😺😺😺

Cats rely on their sense of smell to assess their environment. Your cat will mark their territory by rubbing their face and body, leaving pheromones to create a sense of security. Learn more about creating a secure environment for your cat at https://bit.ly/2RFmBT7.

Time has flown by so quickly and we've been so busy this month that I forgot to mention that Coastal Cat Clinic has been owned and operated by Dr. Smith for 19 years now! Purchased from the previous DVM on June 1, 2005. Wow, so hard to believe it has been that long ago. Happy belated 19th birthday to the new Coastal Cat. 😻😻😻😻😻😻😻😻😻😻😻😻😻😻😻😻😻😻😻

FFFF! One of the things I love most about cats is their purr. 😻😻

Your cat’s purring produces a sound every 30-40 milliseconds and lasts 10-15 milliseconds. They can produce about 250 sounds per second and can change in volume, length, and frequency according to their state of mind! Learn more about purring at https://bit.ly/3tHzgHW.
