Fitness February Week 3: Strength

It is a common misconception in the equestrian community that strength training is not necessary. Strength training can have a negative reputation as causing a stiff and braced body or being too strong and aggressive in the saddle, which of course is not what we are wanting to achieve while riding.

However, when we are weak, this can also lead to stiffness and bracing in the saddle. Strength training can help us maintain good posture and remain balanced while riding. Strength training can also increase our stamina and prevent us from growing fatigued while riding.

Have you ever worked on strength training? Check back later today for a DRT article and video on strength training.

Lets continue our interview with Februarys horse of the month Archie. Hosted by rider Abigail you'll find out what Archie loves, and what he doesn't like at all!

Archie has been such a fantastic lesson horse. He is patient with benginners, easy for the little riders to steer, and is trustworthy enough to teach first trot and first canter. A horse like Archie is priceless.

Archie took a sebatical from lessons in 2024 due to an eye condition. We are so thankful for everyone who pitched in to his vet bill to help with some advanced treatment for him. He is doing well and we are so glad to have him back in the lessons in 2025!

Fitness February Week 2: Suppleness

When our bodies are stiff it greatly impacts our riding.
When our hips are stiff, we will struggle to follow the horses movement with our seat bones.
When our legs are stiff, it can cause our aids to be unclear.
Tight arms and shoulders can cause us to have poor contact with the horse’s mouth.

Adding stretching to our daily routine is an easy way to make a big positive impact on your riding. What stretch have you added this week? Tell us in the comments!

Check back later today for another great workout video!

Fitness February Week 2: Suppleness

How do we improve our suppleness as a rider. The good news is that it doesn’t take a great deal of time to keep our bodies flexible. A short 5–10-minute stretching routine each day is a great way to stay on top of your suppleness.

Here is a great video with a simple stretching routine you can do before your ride.

Fitness February Week 2: Suppleness

Suppleness (in relation to riding) is the ability to freely move with your horse by remaining relaxed and stable in the saddle. While we believe that stability is the most important factor for riding, suppleness is a close second. Our head instructor, Kat, is always reminding our riders that we must remain flexibly stable while in the saddle. We must be stable, but it’s not a rigid stability. And we must be flexible, but this does not mean that we are floppy. Check back later to see some pointers on working on suppleness.

The horses and cats have been enjoying a few sunny days and warmer temperatures recently! That means lots of naps in the sunshine when we get it!

Did you know that horses only sleep around 5-7 hours a day! And horses can sleep standing up! Horses have special ligaments that lock their legs in place and enable them to sleep standing up, this is called the "Stay Apparatus".

But to get the deep sleep that we all need horses must lay down. Because they are prey animals, horses will only lay down when they feel safe and secure.

Show us your sleepy cat, dog, or horse in the comments!
