Our little emu is not out of the woods yet. 4 am today she started to show increasing weakness. The vet was wonderful and called in prescriptions at a local pharmacy for me to give the emu along with options from Tractor Supply. I can tell you giving an emu medicines to swallow is not an easy task. If these do not work, we will need to try other types of medications.

24 hour ish update on the young emu. We are giving fluid bolus every 8 hours. Antibiotics every 12. She is stronger today. She is eating. She is loving the attention and wants to play with the flashlight. She is handling all the pokes like a champ. We are not out of the woods yet. But this is promising!

Sad post…we have been loosing some of our young emus. They have passed away quickly. We weren’t sure what we could try, we tried a lot. We found a vet that was willing to come out yesterday (late!) and look over the emus. The heavy rainfall has caused a bacterial bloom that is causing toxins and rapid death in the young emus. Good news…we have a preventative plan and working on a treatment for the most ill emu. The next 2 weeks will still be questionable, it’s a good thing I am not afraid of needles. Fluids, antibiotics, vaccines…lots to do….

The new quarter horse Brandy met the vet for the first time today. She has all her fall vaccines done and behaved very nicely with a treat. After that we went for a short ride around the ring. I will need a new tack to fit her but borrowed some from our neighbor for today. She did great! Thank you Missy for your help!

Even though we are loving these cooler temperatures, we know it has been a bit gray these past couple of weeks. Well we have the cure - good food, good friends, and puppies!

Way to go Steven!! He worked on his 4H Honeybee project all summer and completed is journal! He won regional best! Very proud of his hard work. He helped teach at our high school class, taught at the local farmers markets, helped teach at the local clubs classes, and he had his own hives he was responsible for this year.

Set up and ready in Marion Square for the Charleston Farmers Market 8-2 today! Also at the Sea Island farmers market 930-1 on John’s island. Come early for best selection of raw milk and meat products. We were able to plan ahead and move the trailer out of the floodwaters and come to the farm even though most the farm is still underwater.
