The Friends of Second Chance is a non profit organization that supports the Second Chance Canine Adoption Shelter.

Second Chance Canine Adoption Shelter started with a dream of former Onondaga County Executive, Joanie Mahoney. County Executive Mahoney began the process of working on a large project that would bring together inmates and homeless dogs. She configured a team of commu

nity leaders that would help see this vision come to light. The community, and beyond, joined in on the journey. The brilliant idea of pairing up inmates with shelter dogs was a sure way to give second chances to both the inmates and the dogs. Upon the end of the dog's training, they are placed up for adoption. Our hope is that the inmates will utilize the skills acquired in a productive and effective way as they enter back into the Central New York community. On October 16, 2015, the Second Chance Canine Adoption Shelter opened its doors! The Friends of Second Chance is a functioning non profit board who is dedicated to supporting the shelter including fundraising efforts to help sustain the shelter's long term success. The sweetest boy Billy is looking for a family to love him, but in the meantime, he’s got a couple of special requests to help keep the shelter running smoothly! 🐾

🎉It’s time for another Happy Tail Adoption!🎉Today it’s Hezly now known as Matildas turn at her happily ever after! Her parents say, “Matilda has been settling well into home life. She loves to snuggle, go on adventures, and zoom in the snow. She’s currently enrolled in training class and has made great progress. She’s eager to please. Matilda has filled our hearts with love and we can’t thank our friends at Second Chance enough for their support to ensure a smooth transition into our home.” ❤️🐾

We welcomed two more local dogs from the city shelter into our adoption program today! 🐶 Meet Billy & Ally! 🥰

We have no idea how they ended up homeless, but what we do know is that they are going to make some families very happy! ♥️ We sure have loads of wonderful dogs right here in our own community who keep getting left behind through no fault of their own. And we love being able to step in to help give them their second chance! 🐾

“DOG’S AREN’T PLOTTING TO DOMINATE US!

We hear it so often - “my dog is dominant” or “trying to be the alpha” or “I have to be the pack leader to show my dog who’s in charge”.

It’s so easy to attribute unwanted behaviour to these popular labels. It’s easy to use what is often believed to be an “educated” phrase that enables a belief of knowledge about dog behaviour.

The definition of dominance - dominant in the chain of command / occupying or being in a commanding or elevated position / having a controlling, prevailing, or powerful position in a social hierarchy.
Do we really believe this of our dogs in the context of our relationship with them?

Are dogs really trying to take over our homes and rule the world?

We control everything in their lives - what and when they eat, when they go out, their choices, where they sleep, who they interact with, their environment etc. and yet it’s still believed they are trying to dominate us.

Dogs know that we are not dogs and they don’t expect us to behave like other dogs.

Dogs need us to be their advocate, a source of security, of safety and a secure base from which they can navigate our world – not a source of pain, fear, intimidation, force, competition and dominance.”

🍁 Fall In Love With Tilly 🐾🎃 On 11/21 it will be 1 year that Tilly has been living without a family of her own. This sweet young Lab has spent most of that time in a kennel. Thankfully, a few weeks ago we met a wonderful foster who was willing to give Tilly a chance.🐶♥️ Now Tilly gets to spend her days in a home while she waits for her family. 🥰 Her foster mom reports that she is doing very well. Tilly doesn’t get into anything that she isn’t supposed to, and loves having her own yard to run & play in! Tilly goes into her crate by choice and loves to curl up in there for naps. ⭐️Tilly has attended class Cohesive Canine Training to work on her manners. She is super smart and learns quickly. ⭐️ This shy girl is looking for a patient family who will understand that she just needs a few minutes to warm up to new people. 🩷⭐️ Tilly ⭐️🩷 Sweet Tilly recently went on an adventure with one of our volunteers. 🐾 She was a great passenger in the car and loved exploring the trails at a local park. 🐕‍🦺 Once she got on a trail she loved sniffing and hunting! 🐿️🐇 She even enjoyed taking a dip in the water 💦 to cool off. Tilly is a young Lab mix who would really benefit from leaving shelter life behind her. She’s been living in a kennel since November! During her time with us, she has attended a training class with Cohesive Canine Training to work on her manners. ✨NUNI✨ This adorable 🥰 young pup is in need of a loving & patient home. 🏡 Nuni is so affectionate and sweet, and wants nothing more than cuddles and play time. ❤️ He is a smart boy who has done well with training to work on his manners, and now all he wants is a family who will understand that he needs some help overcoming his fears of loud noises. This has made potty training a little bit difficult for Nuni, because loud noises outside tend to scare him.
