1️⃣ They’re not small forever! Many aquatic turtles, like red-eared sliders, start small but can grow up to 12 inches long. Be prepared to upgrade their tank size as they grow!
2️⃣ They’re long-term buddies. With the right care, aquatic turtles can live 20-30 years or more. Adopting one is a big commitment, so plan for the long haul!
3️⃣ Diet variety is key. Aquatic turtles need a balanced diet of turtle pellets, leafy greens, and protein sources like insects or small fish to stay healthy and happy.

It all started with Boggy—a sweet little rescue who came into my life during college when I needed him most. He wasn’t just a pet; he was my ESA, my constant companion, and a familiar face across campus.
Boggy would tag along to club meetings, study sessions, and even behavior discussions in my environmental science classes. He became something of a local celebrity, bringing smiles to stressed-out students (and professors!) wherever he went. But for me, he was so much more than that. He was my comfort during tough days, my reminder to slow down, and the reason I found my passion for hedgehog rescue and advocacy.
Now, here we are. Boggy’s Buddies has grown into a place where countless hedgehogs have found second chances and loving homes. From timid little souls who’ve never known kindness to outgoing explorers eager to bond, each hedgie that’s come through our doors carries a story of resilience and hope.
I still think of Boggy often, especially when I watch a newly adopted hedgehog snuggle into the hands of their forever family. His legacy lives on in every hedgie we rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome.
This isn’t just a rescue—it’s a mission, inspired by one little hedgehog who changed everything. 💕

💭 Thinking about getting a hedgehog? Let’s talk about some common mistakes we see so you can avoid them and give your prickly pal the best life possible!
🧸First up: Buying for young kids. Hedgehogs are super cute, but they need gentle, consistent care. Handling them can be tricky, especially for little hands, and it’s easy for kids to lose interest once they realize hedgehogs aren’t cuddly 24/7.
Next: Holiday impulse buys. We get it—hedgehogs make adorable gifts. But without proper planning, it often leads to unprepared owners… and hedgehogs getting rehomed after the holidays. 🎄
Classroom pets? It’s a no from us. The noise, light, and handling from so many different people can cause a ton of stress for these nocturnal, solitary animals. ✏️ 📄
Speaking of stress: Let’s talk daytime disturbances. Hedgehogs sleep during the day! Waking them up repeatedly can weaken their immune system. Respect their schedule to keep them happy and healthy. 💤
🧠 Another mistake we see? Inadequate housing. Think big! Tiny cages = unhappy hedgehogs. Make sure your setup is roomy and safe, with proper bedding and enrichment to keep them active.
And don’t forget about diet! Unbalanced diets can lead to health issues like obesity. Stick with a quality base diet (cat food works great!) and offer healthy treats in moderation. 🪱 🪱
Now, a big one we see with new owners: Handling with gloves. It may be tempting when you’re nervous, but your hedgehog needs to learn your scent to bond with you. So ditch the gloves and handle them gently with bare hands. 🧤 🧤 🚫
🦔 Lastly: Cohabitation. Hedgehogs are solitary. They don’t want a roommate. Trying to house them together can cause stress, injuries, or worse.
Avoiding these mistakes can make all the difference in your hedgehog’s life! ❤️
