Boggy’s Buddies Needs YOU!

We’re looking for animal lovers to join our team as fosters and volunteers! Boggy’s Buddies takes in small mammals, birds, and reptiles/amphibians. While we most commonly receive hedgehogs, we help all kinds of critters find their forever homes—and we can’t do it without your help.

Here are the opportunities to get involved:

✨ Director of Resource Management
Oversee donations and supplies! You’ll organize donation drives, track essential items like food and bedding, and keep our Amazon wishlist up to date. This role ensures every animal in our care has what they need to thrive.

✨ Director of Social Media
Create and post engaging content to increase our online presence. This role ensures our branding is cohesive and consistent while sharing adoption stories, rescue updates, and more across our platforms.

✨ Director of Event Coordination
🛑Position Temporarily Filled🛑
Plan and organize in-person events to connect with the community, raise funds, and share our mission. This role helps us build a stronger presence locally and creates opportunities to raise awareness and support for our cause.

✨ Director of Community Outreach
Recruit fosters and volunteers, advertise our rescue, and build relationships with local organizations and businesses. You’ll play a key role in spreading the word and growing our community of supporters.

✨ Director of Placement & Support
Oversee the placement process and provide post-placement support, ensuring animals are thriving in their new homes. This role includes checking in with adopters at key intervals (7, 14, and 30 days) and providing guidance. You will also be responsible for updating families who have surrendered animals to us about any major developments, such as significant medical procedures, adoptions, or changes in the animal’s status.

✨ Foster Family
Provide temporary care for animals while we find them permanent homes. Fosters are essential to our rescue’s success, giving animals a safe, loving space to land until they are adopted.

We are so grateful!

A HUGE thanks to Dr. Allison with the amazing VCA who donated two MEGA bags of fleece, and Claire who donated another XL bag of fleece and scraps as well.

Fleece is an amazing bedding choice for hedgehogs, and here’s why:

• Mite Prevention: Unlike wood shavings, fleece doesn’t harbor mites, which keeps our prickly friends itch-free and healthy.

• Cost-Effective: Fleece can be washed and reused, and even when it tears, we repurpose the scraps into burrowing material—no waste here!

• Soft and Warm: Hedgehogs are sensitive to temperature, and fleece is perfect for retaining heat and keeping them comfy.

• Dust-Free: Unlike some traditional beddings, fleece doesn’t produce dust that can irritate their respiratory systems.

• Eco-Friendly: By reusing and repurposing fleece, we reduce waste and keep our rescue efforts as sustainable as possible.

No, Spike isn’t sedated.

He’s just wiped from his big day at the vet!

We absolutely adore Dr. Christian and her amazing team at Healthy Pet Veterinary Clinic ❤️

Spike had radiographs done of his shoulder to determine if that could be a cause of his immobility and balance. Good news - no bone cancer! Bad news - back to the drawing board.

With some eye drops for potential cataracts/glaucoma and pain meds/anti-inflammatory meds on board, we’ll be monitoring Spike closely for the next two weeks. We’re hoping to see some improvement, but we also know we’re working with an elderly hedgie who has his own limits and dignity as well.

We’re committed to seeing him through and getting him help. We couldn’t do it without your support!! Thank you to everyone who has helped Spike along the way. Though it has only been one week, we have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of love he’s received.

🎯 Giving Tuesday Goal: $500 | Raised So Far: $425

As we close out our Giving Tuesday posts, we want to share the story of a very special hedgehog who has touched the hearts of everyone here at Boggy’s Buddies: Spike.

Spike is a 4.5-year-old hedgehog who was surrendered to us after his owners, who loved him deeply, made the incredibly tough decision to give him the medical care he needed. His balance issues were so severe that it was clear something was wrong, but the cause wasn’t obvious. His owners made the selfless choice to surrender him, knowing that he needed specialized care to have a chance at recovery. Their love for Spike and their willingness to let him go to a place that could offer him the help he deserved shows how truly devoted they were to his well-being.

When Spike arrived, he was in rough shape. He could barely move on his own and could not eat due to his instability, which is why we’re syringe-feeding him every meal. He’s had significant difficulty moving around, so we’ve customized his enclosure to be as supportive as possible, with flat surfaces and small supports to help keep him upright as he leans and tries to move. Every day is a challenge, but Spike is showing resilience beyond measure.

Spike’s suspected condition is a severe inner ear infection, which has affected his balance. We’re hopeful that with continued care, we will see further improvement, but for now, we’re taking things one day at a time. While he’s still unable to move well or eat on his own, Spike is a fighter. With the help of generous donors, we’ve been able to provide him with everything he needs—from specialized food to custom accommodations in his cage to regular vet visits.

Your support is what allows us to provide this level of care, and for that, we are so incredibly grateful. Spike may have a long road ahead of him, but we’re committed to doing everything it takes to ensure he’s comfortable and loved as he recovers. He’s worth every ounce of effort, and we will continue to fight for him.

Sometimes, the stars align for the most unexpected matches, and that’s exactly what happened with Tokyo.

Tokyo’s story began with a heartbreaking decision. His previous owner was moving out of state to a place where hedgehogs are illegal. Under the threat of having him seized and potentially euthanized by her vet, she made the difficult but loving choice to surrender Tokyo to us, ensuring he had a chance at the life he deserved.

When Tokyo came into our care, we saw a hedgehog who needed stability and kindness. After some time with us, we found him a truly remarkable home. He now lives with a family that couldn’t be a better fit! Tokyo is the beloved pet of their oldest son, who absolutely adores him. With the mother’s care and the children’s endless affection, Tokyo’s days are filled with love, play, and all the warmth he could ever need.

Rescue is about finding the perfect match, and Blackjack’s story is proof that with patience and love, every hedgehog can find their happily-ever-after. 🦔✨

Blackjack was part of the "Lucky 5" crew surrendered to us from Minnesota earlier this year. When he arrived, he was extremely shut down—huffy and unsure despite the hard work of the MN rescue station who cared for him before. Over time, through gentle handling, consistency, and lots of patience, Blackjack started to let his guard down.

Even with his progress, we knew Blackjack needed someone special—an experienced, calm adopter who could meet him where he was and help him thrive. That’s when his perfect match came along: a hedgie parent who had already adopted an older hedgehog from our Chicago rescue partner. In October, Blackjack joined her family, where he now receives all the love and care he needs, and we couldn’t be happier for him!

Blackjack’s journey highlights how your support transforms lives. Thanks to your donations, Blackjack had everything he needed to heal and grow in our care—vet visits, proper nutrition, a cozy environment, and endless patience. Rescue work is full of surprises—like a double adoption that brought together two hedgehogs from opposite ends of life’s journey into one loving home. 💕 Meet Gatsby, our oldest hedgie, and Saguaro, our youngest, who found a perfect home together this past summer.

Gatsby, an elderly hedgie with a heartwarming story, spent about 3-4 months with us. He was originally bought for a young child who quickly lost interest, leaving Gatsby unwanted because he was "boring and spiky." Over time, Gatsby developed a foot injury that marked him as special needs, but his gentle spirit never faltered.

Saguaro came from a young nurse with a deep love for hedgehogs. She had cared for rescues before, and Saguaro was her most recent companion. You could feel the love she had for him in the way she spoke—this little guy was cherished. Still, she wanted him to have a life filled with even more opportunities and decided to trust us to find him the perfect forever home.

Their adopter, a seasoned hedgie owner with a heart of gold, came to us looking for a young, friendly companion but also wanted to help an elderly or disabled hedgehog in need. The moment she met Saguaro’s bubbly personality and heard Gatsby’s story, she knew they both belonged with her. Today, these two boys receive exceptional care and all the love they could ever dream of.

Thanks to your support, Gatsby and Saguaro had everything they needed while in our care—vet visits, food, warmth, and love. And because of that foundation, they were ready to start the next chapter of their lives in a forever home filled with kindness and compassion.

Next, we honor the memory of Honey, another beautiful hedgehog whose story reminds us of the bittersweet moments that come with rescue work. Honey was surrendered to us on May 14, 2024, by her heartbroken owner, who had developed severe allergies. Even during the surrender, her love for Honey was clear—she spoke tenderly about her baby, despite the hives breaking out on her hands. Letting go was an agonizing decision, but she did so to ensure Honey could live the rest of her days in comfort and care.

Honey was a spirited hedgehog, a little huffy in her old age, but with a personality all her own. At over three years old, she loved the simple joys in life: live worms, zooming on her wheel, and the occasional treat. She had even been potty trained, always returning to her corner like the clever girl she was.

Though her time with us was short, we take comfort knowing we were able to provide Honey with a stable, loving environment where she felt safe and cared for. She spent her last night happily running on her wheel, her food bowl emptied by morning. She passed away quickly and peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of resilience and love.

Because of the generosity of our donors, Honey never had to wait for anything. From fresh food and a cozy shelter to the stability she needed in her final months, she was surrounded by care. It’s because of your kindness that animals like Honey can live their best lives, no matter how much time they have left.

While we are fortunate to have only felt the heartbreak of losing a beloved hedgie twice this year, we carry the weight of each loss deeply, knowing how much love and effort went into giving them the best possible lives in their final moments. Today, we want to share the story of Token, a special hedgehog whose journey is a testament to the power of love and support. Token came into our care alongside another hedgehog, Gamble, after being surrendered from a difficult and uncertain situation. She had been living in conditions that lacked consistent care, warmth, and stability—basic necessities no animal should go without. When Token arrived, it was clear she was ready for a fresh start, and we were determined to give her the life she deserved.

Despite her past, Token’s spirit was unshaken. She was a sweet and affectionate hedgehog who adored snuggling, giving kisses, and crawling into laps and pockets. Her gentle, loving nature made her a joy to be around, and she quickly became a favorite among our team.

Not long after her arrival, Token faced a serious challenge: a severe eye injury that needed immediate attention. Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, we were able to act quickly, providing her with the surgery and care she needed. While the loss of her eye was difficult, Token showed incredible resilience and continued to thrive in our care.

Sadly, Token’s health began to decline further, and on October 29th, we moved her to hospice care. Our vet suspected she was battling eye cancer, which may have spread and caused her to decline neurologically. Despite these challenges, Token spent her final weeks surrounded by warmth, love, and the best care we could provide. She passed peacefully a few weeks ago, knowing only kindness and comfort in her last days.

Because of the support of donors like you, Token’s story is one of hope and compassion. She never had to wait for a vet visit, never went without food or shelter, and never had to live without the love she so desperately needed. Her journey was transformed from uncertainty and neglect to one of security, care, and dignity.

Roulette’s journey to her forever home was truly a labor of love, made possible by a dedicated community of volunteers. This sweet 2-3-year-old female hedgehog had a tough start in life, having been part of a breeding operation, but she was ready for a fresh start filled with love and care. When Roulette came into our care, she quickly proved to be one of the sweetest hedgehogs we’d met. She was calm, friendly, and never hesitant to enjoy time with her human friends. She loved her water bowl and her wheel, but wasn’t too fond of digging boxes. Despite her picky eating habits, she thrived on a balanced diet and was a joy to care for.

Roulette’s adoption process involved a special effort by a dedicated volunteer who traveled hours to ensure Roulette found the right match. The volunteer met Roulette and her foster an hour from home, then delivered both Roulette and Gamble for a meet-and-greet with their potential adopter. After meeting both hedgehogs, the adopter chose Roulette. Then, the volunteer drove another hour to return Gamble to her foster home before heading back to her own house. It was a long day, but it was worth it to see Roulette finally find a loving home.

Roulette’s new owner is a kind lady who already had experience with small animals and was excited to welcome a hedgehog into her life. She’d been wanting a hedgehog for a while, and when she met Roulette, it was clear that the two were meant to be together.

Roulette’s story reminds us how much of an impact we can have when we come together to help an animal in need. She’s now in a loving home where she’s finally able to relax and enjoy life. Thanks to everyone who supported her, she has the fresh start she deserves.

Today, we're excited to share the heartwarming story of Buster and Bixby—two sweet albino rats whose journey to their forever home was filled with challenges, love, and growth.

Buster and Bixby weren’t always in the best situation. These former lab rats were surrendered to an owner who then posted them on Craigslist, hoping to find them a home as snake food. 😢 Luckily, a kind-hearted supporter saw the listing and immediately contacted us for help. We couldn’t let these boys fall into such an awful fate, so we swooped in and brought them into our care.

When Buster and Bixby first arrived, they were timid and unsure of people. Having lived in a lab environment, they were accustomed to isolation and likely weren’t exposed to much human interaction. We quickly learned they were probably older than their original estimated age of 1-2 years, but they were in surprisingly good health. With time, patience, and lots of love, these two began to open up.

After 5 months in foster care, where they gained confidence and became more comfortable around humans, Buster and Bixby were ready for their forever home. We found a family who had young children and other pets, and they were the perfect fit. The boys now live in a home where they’re adored, and their story is a shining example of what’s possible with a little care and attention.

Buster and Bixby’s journey was a reminder that even when things seem hopeless, there’s always a chance for redemption. It took a little longer for these boys to find their home, but they’re living proof that with support and patience, we can make miracles happen.

Today, we want to share the story of two very special little guys who touched our hearts from the moment they arrived—Gizmo and Gadget. These two male rats were the very first surrender we received at Boggy’s Buddies, and while their time with us wasn’t the longest, it was certainly full of love and unforgettable moments.

When Gizmo and Gadget came to us, they were looking for a fresh start. Their previous owner had lost interest in caring for them, and they were no longer receiving the attention they deserved. But these two were a reminder of how important it is to find the right forever home—because every pet, no matter how small, deserves a chance at happiness and security.

From the beginning, it was clear that Gizmo and Gadget were a bonded pair. These two were inseparable—always snuggling, grooming each other, and keeping each other company. They were extremely friendly, social, and very food-motivated, making them a joy to be around. The boys loved to explore, climb, and swim, but their favorite thing was to snuggle up in a hoodie pocket or an igloo, keeping close to the people they trusted.

Over the months, we worked hard to ensure that Gizmo and Gadget found the perfect home. While some animals come and go quickly through our rescue, others take a bit longer. But that’s the way we do things at Boggy’s Buddies—we make sure every animal has a chance at a loving, lasting home. In the case of Gizmo and Gadget, we knew it would be worth the wait, and it was.

After just shy of 6 months with us, these two finally found their forever family—one with experienced rat owners who could give them all the attention and love they deserve. Their adoption fee was waived, and it was a perfect match. Gizmo and Gadget are now living in a home where they’ll be adored and well cared for, just as they should have been from the very start.

Clover’s story is one of those that reminds us why we do what we do at Boggy’s Buddies. This 2-year-old male hedgehog was our second foster program hedgie, surrendered by an owner who simply didn’t have the time for him—a common reason hedgehogs end up in rescue. But Clover didn’t let his tough start define him.

From the moment he came into our care, Clover’s friendly and curious personality shone through. He had the best facial expressions, always looking like he was either deep in thought or excited to explore. His demeanor was one of the most lovable we’ve ever seen—Clover was the type of hedgehog who immediately won over everyone he met with his sweetness and charm.

It didn’t take long for Clover, now Smudge, to find the perfect forever home. He was adopted by a vet tech here in Madison, where he’s now living the dream, surrounded by love and spoilage at every turn. Smudge has truly found his place in the world, and we couldn’t be happier for him.
