Happy lunch time!

We’ve been wondering why Alma keeps getting over looked and it’s because we have slacked at posting her. This chunky momma was a stray and yes, her ear is tipped because her finder was great enough to have her spayed and wasn’t sure what her future was since she was a stray so we tipped her ear. She waited on our waiting list for several months until we finally had space for her.

Alma is now here and safe. She is a sweet lady that is ready for her furrever family!

Come on in and meet her Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 3 to 6 and Friday from 4 to 6!

We've been posting nothing but dogs this weekend, and our cats are fed up with it! So they sent this adorable kitten to steal the spotlight back!

This 5-month-old baby is Yolanda! She is hanging out in one of our free-roaming rooms with a couple of other kittens and building her confidence with people! She is curious about all of the toys that find their way into her room, so this girl is very much still a baby!

Apply on our website or visit us during open hours to adopt beautiful Yolanda!

"Cheese!"

It's Senior Sunday, so our senior gal Lita wants to let everyone know that she is STILL available for adoption! A shelter is no place for senior animals, and this girl has been with us for several weeks now.

Lita needs a home where she is the only dog. She could probably do life with a cat as long as introductions are done properly. She could also live with older kids that respect dog boundaries.

Even if you can't adopt, please consider fostering or spreading the word about this 11-year-old boxer mix so that she doesn't have to spend any more time in a shelter!

To adopt or foster, visit our website to apply! Her adoption fee is $0 thanks to the amazing person that sponsored her!

Our last example for the day of the benefits of playgroups is Valerie, and the benefit for her is something that you might not expect.

Miss Valerie here is terrified of men. There are a few men that regularly come by the shelter, and without fail, she will fear bark at them. A couple of our playgroups volunteers are men, and yesterday, we were determined to help Valerie become more comfortable with them being around. So we started off by having the men sit down in a separate yard. As we saw Valerie relaxing, we gradually moved them closer until they were standing out in the yard with her. And guess what! We heard almost no fear-barking from her, which is pretty incredible! Yes, we still have some work to do... playgroups is amazing, but it's not a miracle cure. But now we have learned how to introduce Valerie to men in a way that has a greater chance of her being successful with them!

Valerie's adoption fee is $125. Visit our website to apply for this sweet girl!

Today, we have shown you a ton of benefits of playgroups, and we have barely scratched the surface of what playgroups does for our dogs. So, if you want to find a way to make the greatest impact on the biggest number of our dogs, playgroups is one of the best things you can do to help out! If you have questions about playgroups or are interested in helping out, send us a message or fill out the volunteer form on our website to let us know you are interested!

When pairs or trios of dogs come into the shelter, oftentimes, one of the dogs relies on the others for their confidence. And Spankie is no different. She came in with her mom Roxie and her little brother Lemmy. She does very well separated from them, but she has had to learn to find confidence in herself rather than relying on them. Playgroups has helped her to do that! We often avoid putting dogs that have come in together out in playgroups at the same time to avoid the pack mentality that sometimes comes along with these dogs. By having her out without Lemmy and Roxie, we have seen that she loves playing with some of the other dogs that she doesn't seem to like when her mom and brother are around (and honestly, the same could be said for both Lemmy and Roxie too)! We love to see their confidence grow!

Spankie, Lemmy, and Roxie are all available for adoption! Their adoption fees are $125 each. While they did come in together, they have shown us that they will all be okay in separate homes, so apply for any of them online!

We have two dogs up next for our next reasons to love playgroups...for some very similar and some very different reasons!

First up is Annie. From day 1, Annie has been the life of the party during playgroups! She doesn't know a stranger, and she wants to be friends with everyone in the yard. If you had seen her in her kennel at first though, you never would have expected it! In her kennel, she was extremely nervous. When someone went into her kennel, she ran to the back so that they couldn't pet her. So we were happy to see her spunky side out during playgroups. She clearly found her confidence from being around other dogs! Is she still nervous with some new people? Yes, of course. But we are seeing a more and more confident pup!

While Annie is nervous with new people, Amy is just stressed when she is in her kennel. So she LOVES to be outside with the other dogs! She runs and bounces around the yard, and she just lights up during playtime! That is where we get to see how amazing this girl really is!

Both of these girls also came to us a little on the plump side. So for both of them, playgroups has the added benefit of helping them shed some excess weight! These two have become best friends during playgroups, so they get to hang out together most of the time that they go out into the yard! We love finding new buddies for our pups!

Each of their adoption fees is $125. Visit our website to apply for either one of them!

Our second example of the amazing benefits of playgroups is this handsome guy...Finley!

Finley came to us every bit of the 7-month-old energetic boy that you would expect from a puppy...and then some! His first several times in playgroups, he really didn't know how to be a dog. He wanted to play, but he barreled into the yard like a tank, and none of the other dogs were sure what to do with him. Now, because of playgroups and some very incredible staff members consistently working with him and getting him around other dogs, he is learning how to play and wrestle in ways that many of the other dogs love! Yesterday, he wrestled with several dogs and had the time of his life! All of this time spent wrestling has the added benefit of tiring him out so that he can relax when he goes back to his kennel.

We tell you all the time about how much we love playgroups, and throughout this afternoon, we want to give you some very specific examples about the difference it can make in a dog's life while they call our shelter home.

Up first is Buttercup! During Buttercup's first week at the shelter, we were fortunate enough to make playgroups happen for three days in a row. On day one, Buttercup was very unsure about the whole thing...she was correcting everyone that tried too hard to play with her. On day 2, she relaxed a little bit. She still wasn't ready to play, but she was curious about what the other dogs were doing. On day 3, Buttercup became a playgroup rockstar! And from then on, she has become our go-to helper dog when we need to introduce new dogs to the group. Stories like hers are what make us wish we could do a playgroup every single day if it was possible!

Buttercup is amazing with dogs and cats, and she could live in a home with older children. She is a 1-year-old Doberman mix.

Adoption fee: $125. Visit our website to apply for this amazing girl!

(Stay tuned throughout the afternoon for more playgroups success stories!)

Annnnndddd here’s Kate!!

Kate is a sweet chonky lady that was found as a stray wandering into a factory because she loves people so much she decided to try factory life.
Kate loves people of all ages and did okay on her cat test.
She is brand new to us so we have not officially dog tested her but through the fence she has told us that she would prefer to not make friends with other dogs.
She is approximately 1-2 years old. In the coming weeks we will be working with Kate in playgroups to get her more comfortable with making dog friends. Stay tuned!

Buttercup...the girl as sweet as her name! Buttercup was picked up after being dumped from a car on the highway. Despite this, she adores people! On a first meeting, she might be a little timid, but she warms up quickly and wants to be as close to you as physically possible. She met some young kids, and she just wasn't too sure about them. However, she would do well with older children, and she's amazing with other dogs and cats. She is guessed to be a 1-year-old Doberman mix. Apply for this amazing girl by visiting our website!

Roxie went on a dogs day out the other day and had a blast!! Here’s what they had to say about our sweet Roxie!

“Hey Tori, here are a few photos of sweet Roxie, she walked on the leash really well, didn’t seem to mind other people walking by, only curious of them and if they had a dog. She was curious of the squirrels that she saw, I said “leave it” and she didn’t pull me anymore. She would sit when I told her to sit for a treat and was the best rider in the car. I feel like she would be a loyal pup for her furever family. And above all, she’s absolutely beautiful 😍 “

Roxie is a 7 year old pittie that is great with kids, and other dogs!
Adoption fee: $125

The rain didn’t stop these pups today!

All of our dogs got a chance to play in the rain with their friends! (Not that they minded much.. except for Buttercup that is)

We have some very social and sweet dogs in our care.

Our dogs, Kira, Amy, Dudley, Lemmy, Annie, Spookie, Boo, and Sassy absolutely LOVED to run and play today.

Buttercup was a rockstar with every dog she met, she couldn’t have an enemy if she tried! (Except rain, she hates rain)

Out sad and shy girl Valerie finally saw some happiness today. She just wanted to run and chase and play. It’s amazing for her! She didn’t even mind saying “Hi” to our playgroup volunteer that she’s never met!

Mr. Handsome Finley had some fun! He is so nervous to play, but he wants to very badly! We are hoping that he finally realizes that it’s ok to play!

Spankie and our male Husky didn’t feel like playing, but they still got to smell the fresh fall air and smell every dog in the yard!

Check out some of the videos in the comments!

Playgroups are an essential part of shelter life for these dogs. From the shy (Valerie) to the wild (Dudley) it lets these dogs refresh their brains and have some fun!

If you would like to come by and see what playgroups are all about, message us!

What’s more fun than watching dogs be dogs?!
