Fridays Furkid,
Check out Saffron’s eyes! That is, if you can get past those ears! Saffron is estimated to be around 8 months old and already has a story to tell about her past. However, that’s in her rearview mirror and she’s safe with Homeward Bound where the rest of her story looks rosy! Saffron currently weighs 23 #, is up to date on vaccinations, chipped and spayed. She’s just waiting for her furever family to find her!

Colic is not a disease, but rather a combination of signs that alert us to abdominal pain in the horse. Colic can range from mild to severe, but it should never be ignored, as many of the conditions that cause colic can become life threatening in a relatively short period of time. Only by quickly and accurately recognizing colic – and seeking qualified veterinary help – can the chance for recovery be maximized.

Virtually any horse is susceptible to colic, so management practices can play a key role in prevention. And although not every case is avoidable, the guidelines listed in the graphic can help you maximize your horse’s health and reduce the risk of colic.

As always, remember that every animal is different depending on age, breed and other health conditions, so be sure to work with your veterinarian to address any concerns specific to your situation!

FRIDAY"S FURKID:
Meet Kira! Her beauty is more than skin deep! Kira is wary of strangers but is an absolute lover of people once she gets to know you and shows it when she smiles at you. If she could laugh, she probably would! Kira is a 40 lb. American Leopard hound mix who enjoys leash walking, zooming around and just hanging out. She understands several commands too. Kira is suited for adult company and older children; nobody under the age of 8. Kira wants to be your one and only girl and not share the house with another pet due to a strong prey drive.

For more information about Kira, or any of the other pets available for adoption, contact Homeward Bound Pet Rescue on their website hbpr.org or email [email protected] or phone at 706-698-HOME (4663).

Although Colic can occur to our horses at any type of the year, colder weather is often associated with a certain type of colic = impaction-related colic. When ingested feed stops moving through the horse’s gut efficiently, the material can accumulate and form a blockage. Feed and gas then back up behind the blockage, causing distention of the intestine and associated pain. This is most likely due to a decrease in water intake causing dehydration and slowing the passage of dry food through the intestinal tract.

The following are suggestions to prevent dehydration and colic during cold weather:

1. Keep your horse hydrated: Colder weather can sometimes cause freezing of water lines and troughs. Make sure to check water sources at least twice daily to ensure your horse has access to water.

2. Provide turnout: Pasture access allows for horse’s guts moving. Both walking and continued grazing allows the gut to keep moving.

3. Addition of electrolyte supplement to feed: Electrolyte supplements are easily accessible at most feed stores. This encourages water consumption. We recommend adding electrolytes to the feed versus adding electrolytes to water. Sometimes the taste of water can change with the addition of electrolytes which could deter our horse’s from drinking water.

4. Be vigilant with cold storms coming through: You know your horse’s behavior the best. If you notice a change, inform your veterinarian.

FRIDAY"S FURKID:
Meet Humphrey! He’s an adorable blend of cuteness; we’re not sure what. Maybe a poodle? Havanese? Maltese? Who cares! He’s an adorable little 14lb. guy who still has puppy teeth. We’re thinking somewhere around 6 months +. He has no idea what to do with this collar around his neck or what we expect when he’s on a leash. All this newness will soon be not so new!

For more information about Humphrey, or any of the other pets available for adoption, contact Homeward Bound Pet Rescue on their website hbpr.org or email [email protected] or phone at 706-698-HOME (4663).

Happy Columbus Day! Did you know that Christopher Columbus brought over 20 mastiffs for hunting when he traveled to America?

Mastiffs are huge (literally) helpers and often are used as service animals nowadays.
We love all the fur-babies big and small!
