February is National Dental Health Month!
Dental health is just as important for our canine and feline friends as it is for us, yet most pets are not getting daily brushings and bi-annual cleanings like us. A few changes in your pet’s routine can make a difference in slowing down their dental disease- like daily or weekly brushing, Chlorhexidine dental chews, and dental rinses. Even more, dental cleanings at a young age, before dental disease progresses, can save your pet (and your pocketbook) from lots of extractions later on!

We’re a bit late to the party, but we want to officially welcome Dr. Devin Vonder Haar to the team! She is our second full time doctor on staff. The addition of Dr. V to our team elevates our level of care with consultation opportunities (two doctor brains are better than one!), her specialty in acupuncture, and her awesome microbiology skills! Dr. V is patient, kind, and caring with every patient she encounters. She graduated from LSU in 2019, and her passion for rescue work (she volunteered at ARNO throughout undergrad) made her a perfect fit for our rescue-forward clinic. When she’s not hanging out with us, Dr. V goes home to her husband, Ashton, 3-year-old son Spencer, husky girl Laika, and kitties King Louie XVI and Ellie. Have you met Dr. V yet?! By now you may have heard about a mysterious respiratory virus occuring in our canine friends. Per the AVMA cases of canine infectious respiratory disease complex (CIRDC) in multiple states have been catching much media attention lately. Efforts are underway to identify one or more pathogens that may be responsible.
We know you may have many questions, but here are the currently known facts:
◾️ Outbreaks of CIRDC occur regularly, and the recent outbreak isn’t cause for alarm.
◾️ Several different bacteria and viruses can contribute to CIRDC, and we don’t yet know which one(s) are causing the outbreak. While we can’t rule out the possibility that a new organism may be responsible for the outbreak, current disease patterns aren’t consistent with the emergence of a new, easily transmitted pathogen.
◾️ Most dogs with CIRDC will have only mild illness, recovering fully within 7 to 10 days. One classic sign is a frequent, honking cough that comes on suddenly. However some dogs may only have symptoms of sneezing and/or a runny nose or eyes.
◾️ Typically, only a small percentage of dogs will develop more severe disease, depending on the infecting organism(s) and the dog’s ability to fight it. These factors can increase a dog’s risk of becoming ill:
1. Short-nose breed, like French Bulldogs
2. Very young or old age
3. Compromised immune system
4. Pre-existing respiratory disease or heart disease
◾️ Signs that your dog needs immediate veterinary care include the following: lingering cough, weakness, loss of appetite, difficulty breathing, worsening of illness, and/or a cough so severe that your dog vomits or has trouble breathing
The best way to protect your dog against CIRDC is to keep their vaccines current. Vaccines not only reduce the chance of your dog becoming ill, they also make your dog less likely to develop severe disease or spread infection to other dogs. We can help you decide which vaccines your dog needs to stay as healthy as possible.

Most everyone knows of Dr. Wisdom’s background in shelter medicine and the heart she has for rescue. She is always overjoyed to see a shelter pup thriving with a new lease on life. So needless to say, we were all excited to get this update on sweet Onyx! Onyx entered the Jefferson Parish shelter in July 2019, and with the help of Dr. Wisdom and shelter volunteers, he was transferred to Char-Wills German Shepherd Rescue in Pennsylvania. He’s now a hard-working boy! 😍
