Ashtabula County has more parvo in it than it has in the last FIVE years. We have seen parvo death too frequently and are urging pet owners to brush up on their knowledge of the virus.
• Adult dogs CAN get parvo virus. Despite the assumption that they build natural immunity, there are multiple strains of parvovirus that unvaccinated dogs are susceptible to.
• Puppies should receive at least 3 vaccines for Distemper/parvo that should finish at 16 weeks.
• Most household cleaners DO NOT kill parvovirus. Bleach is the most common household cleaner that can kill the virus.
• Adult dogs that have been given the vaccine get 3 year boosters.
• EVEN if you cannot afford a puppy appointment with us in the clinic, there are so many options for getting your dog vaccinated. Please, please, please do not expose unvaccinated dogs to public places.
