Louder for the folks in the back!

This post is something I have very strong feelings about...
TURN OUT!!!!
Turn your damn horses outside!!!! They were not made to live in your 12x12 stalls for 23 hours a day!
Do you realize how important mental health is for a horse? Do you realize you are creating other issues keeping your horses stalled up all the time?
I cringe when I hear and see horses being stuck in stalls their whole lives!
I'm not saying your horse shouldn't come in a stall. But they don't need to live in that stall their entire life.
Don't want your horse getting dirty??? Get over it... it's part of owning a horse. It's part of them being happy and having fun! They make water and hoses and brushes everyday -- They will clean up if you put a little of your own elbow grease into it.
Afraid to turn them out because you spent too much money on the horse.... That's not your horses fault. Get insurance if you are concerned. Make sure you have safe turnout. But good grief, stop torturing your horse.
This filthy, muddy horse in this picture is HAPPY, HEALTHY, and he gives me his all when I ask for it!

"Senior" doesn't have to mean skinny. This is Gretta at 35 years of age. She lives on a highly managed diet of soaked Alfalfa cubes and wet grain due to her age related tooth loss. She is fed multiple smaller meals throughout the day rather than one or two larger meals, to aid in absorption of calories and to keep the stomach acid in check. She does not require any supplements due to good nutrition. Coming out of winter horses typically are at their thinnest due to the natural ebb and flow of seasonal grasses and energy consumption caused by colder weather. As you can see, she has a VERY healthy winter coat which we complement with a blanket on the coldest nights. I think she looks pretty darn good, if I do say so myself.

Many of you may remember Amy from her time at Woodlawn Stables. She has worked hard and built a fantastic reputation as a horse-centered rider and clinician. Please follow her page, you and your horse will be happy you did.

A horses first priority when humans are on board is their own safety: namely, staying upright and protecting their balance. Any of our desires or priorities come far behind that, unless we can prove to the horse that our desires are the same as their priorities- to balance the horse and keep them safe. Anything else is stealing from the good nature of the horse.

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT, If you live near a horse farm, PLEASE DO NOT FEED THE HORSES! This older horse choked on carrots that someone fed him. Older horses (this one is 30) do not always have all of their teeth, and cannot chew very well. His normal feed is soaked senior feed…soaked in water so that chewing is easier. So, PLEASE, PLEASE DO NOT FEED HORSES !!!!!! He is doing fine today, but this could have ended his life. He has owners that love him dearly!

When you buy a horse, plan to take care of it in its old age. Use it in such a way that the horse remains healthy in the long term. And when he grows old, see in him the one who was in his full strength, love him even more than in his youth.
