This is a client of mine and her #dog Wakko! They have worked so very hard on #cooperativecare and #consent #training to help Wakko be more comfortable at the #veterinaryclinic when receiving an exam. Wakko has learned #muzzletraining and how to stand in a #chinrest for medical procedures! We then implemented the communication cue "touch" so he knew I was about to touch him. As you can see, Wakko stays in his chin rest and focuses on the treats while I perform a mock exam! We are now working on a blood draw!

Tips and tricks for the first #24hours with a new puppy!
🐾 Have your #newpuppy areas set up and ready to go before bringing your puppy home.
🐾Take a soft bed with you for travel home and utilize #adaptilspray
🐾Once you arrive home, take your puppy to a neutral spot (we chose the porch) and allow your established #dogs to check the puppy out on their own terms. If their not interested, that is fine too! Don't force interactions. Let them come to the puppy if and when they want to.
🐾Once inside the home, place barriers (baby gates) throughout the home to keep your established dogs and the puppy separated.
🐾Utilize #treats with your established dogs when the puppy approaches the barrier to establish a #positiveassociation
🐾Your puppy will want to sit in your lap for comfort and reassurance. Play the #followme game to help your puppy learn their surroundings and to build #confidence in their new home.
🐾 When your puppy starts to get sleepy, place them in their pen or their crate to nap to help them learn to be more #independent when alone. This also allows the established dogs to move through the house freely.
🐾 Avoid letting your puppy "cry it out" in the crate/pen. You have to keep in mind that their whole environment has changed, and there new home can be scary at first. Your puppy needs reassurance, especially the first 24hrs. 😉
🐾 When it's bedtime, it is recommended to place your puppy in a crate in your bedroom. Utilize soft bedding and Adaptil spray. Limit food and water about an hour before bedtime and take your puppy to potty just before bed. **rule of thumb: puppies can hold their bladder for how old they are in months +1 hours. So if your puppy is 8 weeks, they can hold their bladder on average for 3 hrs max! **
When your puppy whines in the middle of the night. Take them to potty, avoid, play, petting, and talking to them/giving attention.

The #pen for baby Moon is all set up! It is recommended that if you are expecting a #newpuppy and you already have established pets in the home to get your #puppysupplies early! If you set up your puppy's pen prior to their arrival, then your established pets can not only check out the space but can also adjust to the changes in the home slowly. Therefore, it decreases some of the #stress and #anxiety of the changes a new puppy can bring. Baby Moon 🌙 comes home April 13th!
