We’re back from a week long trip with a more wins under our belt from the American Beauceron National. Kathleen and her dogs Machete, Ursa and Zark took home a few new ribbons and made loads of new friends from far and wide.

We’re looking forward to catching up with everyone over the coming week.

How often do you praise or reward your dog for making the right choice? Do you spend more energy setting them up for success or interrupting or correcting behaviors you don’t like?

Use your dog’s natural instinct to access the best “enrichment” possible! In this video Day Schooler, Kai the plays the “Stay” and “Go find it” game. To begin teaching your dog to develop “hunt drive” for food or a toy, it's important to first choose a high-value reward that your dog finds extremely motivating. This could be a special treat that they only receive during training sessions, or a favorite toy that they love to play with. Start by showing the reward to your dog and allowing them to sniff it or play with it for a moment to pique their interest. Then, hide the reward in a nearby location where your dog can easily find it. If needed you can have your dog in a crate or held by a friend while you hide it. Encourage your dog to search for the reward by using a cue word such as "find it" or "search." But do not hover over, repeat or show them where it is. Let them do the work. When your dog successfully locates the reward, praise them enthusiastically and reward them with the treat or toy. Repeat this process several times to help your dog associate the hunt with a positive outcome, and gradually increase the difficulty of the hiding spots to challenge their hunting skills. With consistent practice and patience, your dog will soon develop a strong hunt/search drive for food or toys, and it’s the perfect rainy day activity.

My heart is heavy for the loss of one of my client families today. I believe that dogs make us better humans, and I believe that every family deserves a dog that brings them joy.

Sometimes a dog’s behavior is challenging, I’m here to help in this process.
Sometimes a dogs physical body is challenged too, and your veterinary care team will support you there. Sometimes there comes time to make a decision about the quality of life for the animals in our care. I feel my calling as a behavior specialist is to be kind and advocate for those who can’t speak their pain, even if it means letting an animal go.

Molly spent her short life bringing joy to her family and reminding me to always consider the influence of pain in a behavior change plan.

She was the best girl and she was doing so well considering her body was breaking down in front of us. Molly earned her wings today.
