🐾 Our Favorite Brush: The Undercoat Rake 🧡

Undercoat rakes are an essential tool for grooming!

MAS & Australian Shepherds have a double coat, consisting of a dense, soft undercoat for insulation and a coarse top coat that keeps the undercoat dry. It’s crucial to avoid shaving Aussies or any double-coated breeds, as this can permanently damage the undercoat and guard hairs, resulting in a thin or patchy coat. There are exceptions; if a dog is severely matted, shaving may be necessary.

I recommend using an undercoat rake only after thoroughly brushing with a pin or slicker brush to remove tangles. These brushes are effective for lightly going through the coat. For longer hair, a greyhound comb works well for detangling.

Avoid blade brushes like the "Furminator" or “dematting” tools. While they may remove a lot of hair, they also pull out healthy undercoat and damage the top coat, leading to a stripped appearance over time.
