seeds sustainability and cultivates leadership

The Sustainable Agriculture Project is a physical place, and a scientific station, where students can go to research plants, the environment, human-environmental interaction, systems thinking, and community. It is also a laboratory in that it is a space where students can get their hands dirty while learning quantitative and critical thinking skills relating to soil, water, plant life, climate cha

nge, and the environment. It is also a working studio space and gallery for artists, a field site with a ready-made community of people on a small working farm perfect for sociological study. As the season wraps up and the snow comes is thick, the SAP wants to feature the creative work of our 2024 Fall photography intern. Check out their other pieces . ———————————————————————————Here is their internship review, “I spent the semester photographing the food-to-table process, as well as the many events that occur at the SAP. It was a really unique experience to be able to capture the changing seasons on the farm, as well as the harvests and the behind the scenes moments. The SAP is a very special place, and I aimed to display that through my photographs.”

Wow, we've been been keeping busy at the farm👩‍🌾! We're happy to say that we were able to find sheets of plastic that we could reuse for our greenhouse coverings. There's no such thing as trash in our minds♻️! There's never a time we're not being goofy either. Even the Eastern Brown Snake decided to join in🐍! We do have our more serious moments, however, such as discussing designs for edible food forests. This will be a long, but beneficial project🌲. Lots of hands make for lots of progress. GVSU TRIO helped us out for a few days, and got a lot of work done! We are excited to see the Paw Paw trees TRIO planted with us grow tall and strong 💪. Never a dull moment at the SAP 💚.

Last Wednesday we had our first Farm Stand of the Summer! 🧑🏼‍🌾 If you missed out, don't worry. We'll be at the GVSU clocktower from 10am-1pm again this Wednesday and the following weeks. Come stop by to get yourself some fresh, yummy produce!!!🥬🍅🫑

Our farm hands and interns worked together to harvest the beautiful shares for the first session 👨‍🌾👩‍🌾! Within this share, our shareholders will be enjoying vibrant radishes, bok choy 🌱, fresh spring mix with pea shoots and lettuce 🥬, spinach, yummy baby kale, arugula, and lovely green onions 🌿. The GVSU farmers spent part of the morning perfecting their flame weeding technique on a bed of carrots. 🔥🔥 We torch the recently germinated weeds making room for the ungerminated carrot seed to rise from their ashes!

We love to get dirty at the SAP!! Last Friday, GVSU’s Soil Judging Team visited the SAP to analyze and sample the soil in our partner’s tunnel. Our soil science intern needed to collect data to compare soil characteristics between conventionally and sustainably grown fields. We saw the evidence of the compost added to the soil and surprisingly found out that we have a sandy clay loam. If you are interested in sustainable agriculture, apply for a summer internship!
