What is a Registered Veterinary Technician?

An RVT or “vet tech” is a veterinary professional who works directly under a veterinarian. To become of vet tech, you typically need to earn an associate’s degree in Applied Science/Veterinary Technology. Two years of pre-requisite classes (including biology, zoology and chemistry) plus another two years of dedicated veterinary technology classes (large and small animal nursing, microbiology, radiology, pharmacology…..and more!)

Some of a Vet Tech’s daily duties include:
• Patient care: Obtaining vitals, providing nursing care, and administering first aid or even CPR
• Medical procedures: Assisting in surgery, managing anesthesia, and performing dental procedures
• Diagnostic tests: Drawing blood, performing X-rays , ultrasounds, and analyzing laboratory samples such as blood smears, ear swabs, urinalysis or stool samples
• Educating owners: Advising animal owners on many different subjects like medications, disease processes, dietary needs etc…

Vet techs work in a variety of settings, including specialty animal hospitals, general practice clinics, and research facilities. They are often compared to registered nurses in human medicine.

Is your cat suffering from osteoarthritis?
Similar to dogs, we often prescribe multiple ways to help manage your cat’s arthritis pain. Pain medications, weight loss, exercise, supplements and others.

By most estimates, 90% of cats over age 12 are affected by OA (osteoarthritis).

How will South County Animal Clinic Veterinarians diagnose arthritis in your pet?

The most common way to diagnose arthritis is with an x-ray (radiograph). X-rays indicate joint swelling or changes to the bone, such as thickening or bone spurs.

Depending on your pet, sedation might be needed to get a clear x-ray comfortably.
