One really easy way to teach your dog What is expected of them is to create mini-routines that you consistently repeat.
In this video, I’m demonstrating our paw wiping mini-routine. Whenever we come in from a walk, I wipe Puggles paws off in the same location, and in the exact same order every time. It’s taking a long time for Puggles to become comfortable with her paws being wiped, but this routine and consistent predictability has made the process a lot less stressful for both of us.
When I initially taught this, I would mark and reinforce for every small step in the process. Now I offer a mixture of praise (“good!”), as well as marking and reinforcing (“nice!” + high value treat). I also use verbal predictor cues like paw and foot so that she knows exactly what I’m about to do. Also, mini-routines are an easy way to squeeze training sessions into your daily schedule without too much added effort.
Do you use mini-routines with your dog? Tell us about it in the comments!
