This pretty gal wasn’t ever named. She was paired with Varick this past season, and I’m expecting these beautiful silvery brindles since both parents look that way.

She is one of several proven breeders I will be releasing this fall, after she’s finished laying from this year.

Deep cleaning all the adult enclosures is not a feat for the weak haha the old substrate is made into isopod bins, new substrate is mixed (I make my own). All the cork is washed then baked. All the plastic plants, ledges etc are rinsed, sanitized and rinsed again before we can re-assemble.

A new project I had undertaken this season was to see if I could duplicate these funky areas of no color to the offspring. I paired this male with a female from my dark line. All the babies were normal phantoms, and the very last egg of the season hatched a super form!

This season was the first season for the male, and the dam was not a known Cappuccino. The super form was not expected, but going forward I can only assume that both parents are likely Capps and will not be paired to any known or suspected Capps down the road.

We’ve all heard the mumbling- what is Pixel, and why haven’t we learned anything conclusive about it yet? ***LONG READ***

As the 2024 breeding season draws to a close, and most of my eggs have hatched from my Pixel project, I’m not sure I have enough information to provide a solid answer on inheritance. This past season mirrors prior years of working with pixel like animals: raising more questions!

I have been operating my own Pixel project in these phases:
A- Are the different Pixel lines compatible (example- when paired together, do they produce pixel offspring).
B- Is Pixel a recessive trait?
C- Is Pixel a dominant trait?
D- is Pixel exclusively a line-bred trait?

I paired a Pixel of unknown lineage x Pixel Lillywhite (referred to by some breeders as Velvets). The pixelation in these LWs only appears in the offspring with the LW gene. Non LW offspring do not visually express pixelation. The LW offspring did not hatch with visual pixelation, however, they fully develop both dorsum and lateral pixelation as early as 7 months of age.

I paired Pixel of unknown lineage x a Pixel produced here in 2020. None of the offspring hatched with visual pixelation. All offspring are being held back to either share with others working with Pixels, or for future test mating.

I paired a Pangea line Pixel x a Pixel produced here in 2020 (full sibling to the female above). Initially I was expecting to see pixelation in either the Pangea line form OR the Dam’s form. What resulted was all hatchlings hatched with a visual blend of BOTH pixel forms. All offspring are being held back.

I paired a Pixel of unknown lineage to an extreme harlequin female that is a half sibling to two visual pixels (same Dam). One hatchling hatched with no visual pixelation. There are still two more sets incubating.

Visual Axanthic was paired with Pixel Lillywhite (Velvet) and no viable offspring resulted.

Pixel of unknown lineage was paired with a Cappuccino female. One offspring hatched, and was a super form Cappuccino that passed away shortly after hatch. The remaining eggs were not viable.

I’m continuing on hopefully cracking this code!

She has to have an abdominal surgery to fix some ongoing health issues and because of the physical nature of her work (standing for long periods, lifting and bending and wrestling dogs) she will have to be off work for 2 months.
