‼️Why We Strongly Recommend the Leptospirosis Vaccine‼️

Leptospirosis is a serious and potentially life-threatening disease that affects both animals and humans—making it what’s known as a zoonotic disease. It’s caused by bacteria found in the urine of infected animals and can be spread through contaminated water, soil, or direct contact with infected pets. Even dogs that live primarily indoors are at risk, especially after heavy rain or flooding.

Vaccination is one of the most effective ways to protect your dog—and your entire household—from this dangerous illness.

Recently, this hit close to home. Our own veterinarian, Dr. Jason Kennell, likely contracted leptospirosis from a contagious patient. He was hospitalized for five days, after battling symptoms for nearly a week. This has been a sobering reminder of just how real and serious this disease can be—not only for your pets but for the people who care for them.

We can’t stress enough how important it is to vaccinate. It’s a simple step that can prevent significant suffering for both pets and people.

Finally, we want to extend our heartfelt thanks to all of our wonderful clients who have been so patient and understanding while we adjusted schedules. Being down Dr. Jason and allowing his wife, Dr. Kaci, time to be by his side meant some changes in our daily operations—and your support has meant the world to our team.

Thank you for trusting us with your pets—and for being part of our extended clinic family. 💙💙🐈🐕

One week ago I kissed my baby boy goodbye on my way out for work. But I had no idea it would be for the last time. Although I still can’t even wrap my head around what happened and I feel we have an obligation to share what happened to Petey to hopefully prevent it from happening to any of your babies. So we apologize in advance bc this is so hard to write about & I’m sure such a downer to read. Last Monday, Christian beat me home from work by about 10 min & was surprised when Petey didn’t greet him at the door like usual. As he walked in further he saw our sweet boy laying lifeless with a stupid chip bag over his head. He was able to get them off the counter that we will forever blame ourselves for leaving out. He ate every chip out but of course went back for crumbs... with there being nothing left inside every time he would go for more he would inhale making the bag tighter & tighter around his head.. ultimately resulting in suffocation 💔 Petey was SMART so I didn’t understand why he couldn’t get it off with his paws. But after doing research the stats on how often this happens is shocking. 3-5 pet suffocation’s get reported every week and 42% of those occur while the owner is in the next room. It only takes about 3 minutes for their oxygen to drop to fatal levels. With this happening so often we were so surprised by the lack of awareness on this topic out there. Especially bc I was a very overprotective dog mama. In fact 90% of the incidents reported the owner had never heard of this until it happened to them (us included). Chip bags, cereal bags, bread bags, popcorn bags, dog / cat treat bags seem to be the most common. So I just ask that in honor of my boy Petey that you be extra careful, warn other dog owners & give your fur babies some extra love today and everyday after this. I pray none of you ever have to experience your heart breaking this way. We love you papas you were the best boy in the whole world & we will remember our good times forever 🐶😇

Has a coyote ever “followed” you or your dog on a walk?

If so, you might have felt afraid. Maybe you thought the coyote was stalking you or that an attack was imminent. But the truth is, you were likely being escorted!

Contrary to common belief, coyotes don’t typically stalk humans with the intent to harm. What you're seeing is often a natural behavior called escorting, where a coyote follows at a distance to make sure potential threats—especially dogs—leave their territory. This behavior is most common from early March through late April, when coyote parents are protecting dens and caring for vulnerable pups.

Escorting usually happens in the early morning or evening and is most often experienced by people walking dogs, as coyotes may view dogs as a threat to their young. Like any good parent, coyotes will look out for their families!

So, what should you do if a coyote starts escorting you?

First and foremost, don't panic! Coyotes are naturally afraid of people. In most cases, they want to avoid us, unless they've become habituated or feel threatened. Stay calm and keep walking at a steady pace. The coyote will typically stop once you’ve left their space.

If your dog isn't leashed, leash up immediately (which is good practice in wildlife areas) and keep your pup close. Most coyote conflicts happen in the presence of dogs, which they often see as competitors or intruders, so responsible pet guardianship is key to preventing problems.

🐾 On the rare chance the coyote gets too close, shout, wave your arms, and try to scare them off. This is called humane hazing. Learn how here: https://projectcoyote.org/hazing-field-guide

As development encroaches on natural habitats, coexistence with wildlife like coyotes is more important than ever. Understanding their behavior and adjusting our own helps create safer communities for all species.
