Longline Recalls (with a Frenchie!)
A short-version answer for what longline recalls can look like out in the wild! There's a LOT of nuance to recalls, in general, but these tenets are pretty solid for building a stronger, voluntary recall from your dog.
-- Always use HIGH VALUE (to the dog!) reinforcers/snacks
-- Always reinforce the dog close to your body
-- Always keep it fun and exciting! Never use punishment!
In this video I'm using a 16 ft. Biothane long line with a 14" bungee to cushion any impact that Sophie may run into on the other end of our tether.

Behaviorally healthy puppies are created by individuals who understand that they need both work (or stimulation!) AND play! As guardians, we often feel like our puppies should be "better" but we're usually missing information when we make this assessment. It's really difficult for puppies to regulate themselves and their arousal level without practicing first, and they often do this through play.
A good rule-of-thumb is to aim for approximately a 70/30 split. 70% of the time, you play and work on engagement. 30% of the time, you work on training concepts and handling.
Bottom line, if you're asking high-level behaviors from your puppy, make sure you're balancing it out with lots of play and positive engagement!

Is this what you think of when you think of “socialization”? Probably not. But activities like this are what helps our puppies to understand how OUR environment works.
Eventually, we want for Maple to be able to enter dog-friendly stores. But, right now, he has no idea how he should act. So, we begin at the very start - the parking lot! Once we’ve mastered this, we’ll work on our inside skills!

Does your dog struggle to ride in the car? 🚗
Sandi doesn’t really like car rides right now, but it’s important for her to be able to be transported safely from point A to point B for various reasons. We’re working to help her understand that not all car rides end in unfortunate destinations and complications.
Courtney is working on teaching Sandi to get into the car herself after doing some counter-conditioning to the presence of the car and its functions/noises. Part of this scary process for Sandi is that she is picked up and placed into the car. She has no control of where her body is placed in space or to have the option to say “no thanks”. We’re going to give Sandi some autonomy back and teach her how to get into and ride in the car by herself. This is the first step in helping her to actually like car rides and to reduce stress during the process.
Because Sandi is so small, we’re using pet stairs to allow her to jump into the vehicle. There are lots of accommodations we can make to help our dogs succeed. Let us know if we can help you and your dog love car rides!

This is some of what we mean when we talk about "socializing" your puppy. Do you live in a rural area where deer and other critters are present? Let them look! Do you live in a city where there are cars, buses and lots of people walking by? Let them look! The trick is to let them look without engaging in other, undesirable behaviors.
Here you can see we're letting Maple look at these deer from a safe distance while securely attached to a leash and harness. We have food reinforcement available and have created a "comfort contingency" for him where we can provide calming physical touch. If he were to get too excited, we would remove him from the situation and try again another day from a greater distance.
Socialization doesn't have to require intensive amounts of work each time, but it is important to recognize that when your puppy is positively exposed to triggers early on - it can set you up for success later in life!

We’re working on getting distance away from Marshmallow while she stays on her place calmly. We do this in short bursts where we approximate toward our goal, basically using baby steps to make sure she feels comfortable throughout the process.
This is the messy, tiring part of training for a lot of folks but it’s so worth it when you put the time and effort in. And if you don’t have the time, let us do it for you!

Maverick is enjoying a stroll down a well-worn trail while it’s still warm enough to do it. To accommodate his seniority, we take lots of breaks, do lots of sniffing, and don’t plan on going as far as we would have in his youth. The sole purpose is for him to feel enriched, exercised and that his cup is filled.

This is what honest, real-life training looks like when you put in the work! Axel’s parents are working with him to change his feelings about when people and dogs appear on his walks. We’re teaching Axel that he can make alternative, appropriate choices when out and about by following and trusting in his handler.
In this video, you see Cole alerting Axel to the presence of a trigger. Axel responds by looking at the trigger and then returning his attention back to his handler. Cole does a great job of keeping Axel engaged and offers him decompression time by scattering treats in the grass. You can see how quickly and easily they move away from the trigger without a reaction.

Austin was excited to work more with the wonderful dogs at The Bridge Home No Kill Animal Rescue earlier this week. In this clip, we see him practicing some skills with his pal Ace (who is the sweetest little love bug!). Ace has been learning "touch" -- to use his nose to boop the two-finger target that we have conditioned. Building upon that skill, we see Austin using this two-finger target to recall Ace to a more precise position in front of himself.
Ace said that was all well and good, but what he really needed were some belly rubs to brighten his day ☺️
