Roses & Rovers Canine Consulting

Roses & Rovers Canine Consulting Certified Professional Dog Trainer serving Johnson City, TN and the greater Southwest VA and Eastern TN area. Hi, there! We're Courtney and Austin Rose.
(2)

We are rewards-based Professional Dog Trainers in Johnson City, TN based out of Bluff City, TN, and serving the larger Southwest VA, East Tennessee, and Western North Carolina area. We use science to guide our understanding of how dogs function in the modern world. We do not use force, intimidation, pain, threats or coercion. This means that we do not use aversive methods (such as prong collars, e

-collars, citronella, leash corrections, etc.) in our training protocols, but instead use a force free approach to training. We believe that all dogs have the right to exist in their natural states of mind and behavior. And we believe that dogs are not robots for humans to program, but rather canine partners with their own thoughts, feelings and desires and training should reflect this truth. We don't believe that there are “bad dogs”, but rather some dogs that lack the framework for how to exist in our homes and society. We are committed to the highest standards of the industry and strive to work toward those with each client. We also believe that it is important to be transparent and honest with our clients when discussing behavior modification for each client’s individual needs. We are committed to continuing to learn as reliable information is presented to the industry and to accommodate our methods as ethically as we can. A little about Courtney & Austin:

Courtney is a Certified Professional Dog Trainer (CPDT-KA) who completed an apprenticeship under Kim Wegel of Wags by Wegel in Roanoke, VA. She graduated Magna Cum Laude in December 2020 with a bachelor’s degree in Companion Animal Science from Virginia Tech. Courtney has been training her own dogs since she was young, but truly began her training journey when she adopted her now 12-year-old Husky + Corgi mix from the shelter when she was 19 years old. He good naturedly lets her practice and hone her training skills as she continues to learn more about the ever-changing dog training industry. Courtney also has extensive experience with reactive dogs, as she owned a reactive Great Pyrenees and has worked with reactive dog-owner teams since beginning her career. She understands the stress and frustration dog owners can feel when they don’t know how to best help their pets and she can help to alleviate much of those feelings through her training protocols.

A short-version answer for what longline recalls can look like out in the wild! There's a LOT of nuance to recalls, in general, but these tenets are pretty solid for building a stronger, voluntary recall from your dog.

-- Always use HIGH VALUE (to the dog!) reinforcers/snacks
-- Always reinforce the dog close to your body
-- Always keep it fun and exciting! Never use punishment!

In this video I'm using a 16 ft. Biothane long line with a 14" bungee to cushion any impact that Sophie may run into on the other end of our tether.

We hope everyone is staying cool during the hot, hot holidays! 🔥🔥🔥🌡️🌡️🇺🇸

Have you ever tried to train 2 dogs at the same time? No? Well, let me tell you - it can be difficult!

One thing we love to teach our multi-dog households is how to share the limelight and take turns training or working. And the great news is, there are so many methods we can use to accomplish this in a way that’s cohesive with your life!

If you’re interested in learning how to train each dog in your household, drop us a DM!

NEW PACK MEMBER 🚨

This is Sage and she’s the newest permanent pack member of Roses & Rovers!

We came across this sweet girl at The Bridge Home No Kill Animal Rescue and knew we had to bring her home. She perfectly complements our boys and will be a fantastic role model for Maple as he grows into adulthood.

Wish her all the luck! 🍀

NEW PACK MEMBER! 🚨

This is Yenko and he’s HANDSOME 😍

He’s joining our pack to learn how to stay close to those pesky people holding his leash and come back when they call him (who wants that, amirite?).

For dogs that are bred for a purpose (think: a Husky is bred to pull or a Great Pyrenees is bred to think independently), we use breed-informed training techniques to help your dog best succeed. Not all methods are created equally and not everything needs to be reinforced equally. Let us know if you have a purpose-bred dog and how you succeed in working WITH their inherent traits! If you and your dog are struggling to do this - let us know! We can help!

We generally have a 75% rule when we work on stationing (75% of the body should be on the mat). Pongo says we should cut him some slack since he’s just learning the ropes. What do you all think? 😂

Calling all soon-to-be, hope-to-be and current mamas!

Did you know we specialize in helping dogs get ready for new family members? Not all dogs have a lot of exposure to babies and all the accouterment that comes with that experience. Sometimes, they can make inappropriate choices where your new baby or their things are concerned.

If this is you and your dog, don’t worry! We can help!

Here we’re teaching Marshmallow that she can easily and comfortably walk by the stroller side. She’s never experienced anything like this so this is how we began to build that foundation for her. Slow and steady and no pressure. This is just one of the many skills she needs to learn to cohabitate with babies and toddlers.

Send us a DM if you need some help bringing baby home to your dogs!

Shout out to this committed team for working through the rain and mist to achieve their goals! 💪

It’s not always easy to commit to following through with something that can be as difficult (emotionally and physically) as training your dog. But we’re so incredibly proud when our clients show up ready to work!

If you’ve been wanting to deepen your relationship with your dog - the time is now! Reach out to see how we can help you reach happiness!

Behaviorally healthy puppies are created by individuals who understand that they need both work (or stimulation!) AND play! As guardians, we often feel like our puppies should be "better" but we're usually missing information when we make this assessment. It's really difficult for puppies to regulate themselves and their arousal level without practicing first, and they often do this through play.

A good rule-of-thumb is to aim for approximately a 70/30 split. 70% of the time, you play and work on engagement. 30% of the time, you work on training concepts and handling.

Bottom line, if you're asking high-level behaviors from your puppy, make sure you're balancing it out with lots of play and positive engagement!
