With the recent rise in canine respiratory infections impacting many parts of the country, it's important to know the signs & how to protect your pup. The Cornell Richard P. Riney Canine Health Center has compiled the latest information from experts across the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine and is working to support the veterinary community in addressing this event as it evolves. researchers affiliated with the Riney Canine Health Center are working to better understand Canine Hip Dysplasia. Canine Hip Dysplasia is an inherited developmental malformation that results in painful and debilitating arthritis and affects dogs of various breeds, sizes, and ages. Our researchers are conducting an important research study on this genetic disease with the aim to gain a better understanding of the condition, its risk factors, and potential treatments to enhance the quality of life for dogs suffering from hip dysplasia.

If you have a Golden Retriever, Labrador Retriever, German Shepherd, or a mixed-breed dog including at least one of these three breeds that has completed an Embark test, you can help us!

We are looking for:
๐ŸพDogs that have been diagnosed with hip dysplasia.
๐Ÿ•Dogs older than 8-years old that have not been diagnosed with hip dysplasia and have not had any hip issues.

Your participation in this study would involve:
๐ŸถCompleting a short survey about your dog.

As the leaves change and the temperature dips with the progression of fall, the likelihood of your pups interacting with deer ticks increases significantly. Deer ticks love this time of year, so here are some tips to keep you, your dogs and other household pets safe this autumn.

1. Use veterinary-approved tick preventives on your dog (more info below).

2. Avoid wooded areas and tall grass.

3. Check your pets and yourself after going outside. Ticks can be transmitted to indoor cats, so make sure to do a thorough search.

4. Do not handle ticks with your bare hands. Ticks transmit numerous diseases to dogs and people, including:

*Borreliosis (Lyme Disease)
*Anaplasmosis
*Babesiosis
*Ehrlichiosis

5. Contact your vet or doctor with questions.

The phrase we hear most often is, โ€œI never knew you were here!โ€

Well, allow us to re-introduce ourselves! We are Binghamton Animal Clinic, located at 196 Riverside Drive. We are the only walk-in veterinary clinic in the Binghamton area. In case you havenโ€™t heard, we are ALWAYS accepting new patients!

So, how do we operate?

Our hours of operation are Monday-Friday: 9am-5pm (closed for lunch ~1-2pm) Saturday 9am-3pm.

Being strictly walk-in, we do not schedule appointments. We operate on a โ€˜first come, first servedโ€™ basis. We have one doctor on staff each day, so the wait times are likely to be lengthy. Once a patient has been checked in, they WILL be seen at some point that day. All we ask for is your patience and understanding.

Upon your arrival, proceed to the porch. There, you will find a ticket reel and information cards. The number assigns your spot in line, and the information card will provide what we need for the check-in process.

Going forward, we will accept patients starting at 9:00 am each day and will establish a queue of patients until we have filled the entire day with patients. Anyone who will be seen after our lunch break will be notified at the time of check-in and given the option to leave and return after 2pm. Once we have reached our full capacity for the day, we will stop accepting patients. We always recommend โ€œthe earlier, the betterโ€ because our cut-off times are subject to change every day. We also recommend calling or texting us to ensure we are still accepting patients that day.

Any other questions? Give us a call or shoot us a text & weโ€™ll see what we can do to help. 607-723-1708.

We look forward to meeting your pets!

๐Ÿซ๐Ÿช Did you know certain types of chocolate are more dangerous to pets than others? As a rule of thumb: the higher the percentage of cacao, the less it takes to make a pet sick. Be sure to take extra precautions to keep any chocolate items out of your pet's reach.
If your pet does happen to get into chocolate, remain calm and consider reaching out to a poison prevention hotline. Be sure to explain the size of your dog, the type of chocolate, approximate amount ingested, and how long it has been since consumption. These details greatly help with treatment advice!

The best evidence relating canine dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) to certain diets is how dogs' hearts improve once they are switched to a traditional diet, said Dr. Aly Cohen in a recent article for NBC News. Cohen, an extension veterinarian for the Cornell Richard P. Riney Canine Health Center, advises owners to steer clear of pet foods that have peas, lentils, chickpeas, potatoes or sweet potatoes listed in the top 10 ingredients.

DCM is a primary disease of cardiac muscle that results in a decreased ability of the heart to generate pressure to pump blood through the vascular system. The definitive cause of canine DCM is the subject of debate, although a number of factors including nutritional, infectious and genetic predisposition have been implicated. The fact that canine DCM occurs at a higher incidence in specific breeds suggests a heritable genetic component to this disease, although it is likely that its etiology is multifactorial. Breeds predisposed to DCM include the Doberman Pinscher, the Great Dane, the Boxer and the Cocker Spaniel.

"Pet parents should always be aware of the medications that both they and their pets are taking and how those medications are stored. However, it is not uncommon for pet parents to come across an unknown pill that they may have dropped or to discover that their pet got into a baggie or container of a guestโ€™s medication. Luckily, our experts put together this step-by-step guide on how to identify an unknown pill and the resources available to pet parents."
