Now that it’s time to hang up the dekes, it’s time to get ready for test season!

Here’s our up and comer, Chief’s Hunker Down Birdie Dawg “Kirby”, wt a recent training day. This little guy just turned a year old and is a ball of fire…and he is a looker to boot! Can’t wait to see him accomplish big things on the campaign trail this year.

Kirby is now coming up on 6 months, and juuuuuust about has lost all his puppy teeth. Hopefully we will be formally starting his training soon, although some days he seems to have it about figured out already 😂😂😂. We have been doing a lot of obedience priming with him, and he has already been introduced to bumpers, wingers, bird wings, and water!

Place work is a fundamental skill when starting basic obedience. 1) It can be used to mark a bed at home where he is supposed to stay until released (if you have company for instance), it can be used to send them to a hunting stand, and can be useful when teaching your pup hand signals (stay tuned for more on this later!). You don’t have to use a clicker, but treats and a “marker” word can really make the process smooth!

He’s pretty stinkin’ cute...even when he wants to snuggle one minute and go psycho the next!! His training is really coming along, he has the whole placeboard thing pretty figured out, and soon we’ll be adding sit and heel to the repertoire!

What books have you read in regards to retriever training? I have utilized Retriever Troubleshooting by Dahl, The Labrador Shooting Dog by Gould, Water Dog by Wolters, and Smartwork by Graham to set the foundation and to guide training of Birdie Dog Kennels new pups.
