💥 GUNNERY 2025 💥

March drill was a big (and cold 🥶) one for Bushmaster Troop, as we headed up to Camp Ripley, Minnesota to conduct crew-served weapon qualification, mounted machine gun crew gunnery, and mortar live-fire exercise. Leading up to this month, your troopers were hard at work preparing themselves to be successful for this key training event involving mastery of their assigned weapon system as either the M240 or M2 .50 cal machine gun in both daytime and limited visibility conditions while exercising proper crew commands to acquire, engage, and destroy a variety of mounted, dismounted, stationary, moving, and multiple targets.

One of Bushmaster Troop’s very own crews comprised of SPC Correa (gunner), SFC Yeager (TC), and SPC Fuhrmeister (driver)—achieved the highest qualifying score in the Squadron, earning a “Superior” rating and the well-deserved title of “TOP GUN” 🏆 Their outstanding performance is a testament to their dedication and skill, making us all proud! Your troopers have been working incredibly hard and will only continue to raise the standard!

📸🌟 SOLDIER SPOTLIGHT 🌟📸

SPC Samuel Cook is a dedicated soldier from Winthrop, Iowa, who embodies the spirit of commitment and hard work both in his military service and his civilian life. Growing up on his family's farms, he learned the value of perseverance and responsibility early on. These qualities have carried over into his military career with the Iowa National Guard, which he joined in high school—a decision that set him on a path of growth and opportunity.

During the summer between his junior and senior years, SPC Cook took on the challenge of basic training, proving his dedication at a young age. After graduating high school, he completed his Advanced Individual Training (AIT). The driving force behind his enlistment was college benefits, which he plans to use this year to pursue a degree in animal science. With aspirations of becoming a veterinarian specializing in large animals, SPC Cook sees the Iowa National Guard as the foundation for achieving his academic and career goals. He credits a recruiter’s visit to his high school for opening his eyes to these possibilities.

SPC Cook’s decision to join the Cavalry was fueled by a desire to be part of combat arms, an area where he felt he could make a significant impact. This choice was also influenced by a deep sense of duty rooted in his family’s military history. His great-grandfather served in World War II, and his grandfather was drafted into Vietnam, both of whom set examples of service that SPC Cook proudly follows.

Outside of his military duties, SPC Cook finds solace and relaxation in his hobbies—golfing, hunting, and fishing. These activities not only provide a break from his rigorous schedule but also connect him to the land and traditions he values.

Looking ahead, SPC Cook has set ambitious goals for his military career. Earning his spurs is a top priority, marking a significant milestone in his journey as a Cavalry scout. His commitment to the National Guard is evident in his favorite memory from xCTC, where he witnessed the remarkable cohesion and teamwork within his platoon and troop. For SPC Cook, seeing how far they had come since his initial entrance into the troop was a powerful reminder of the strength and resilience that comes from working together.

When it comes to offering advice to his fellow soldiers, SPC Cook emphasizes the importance of listening carefully and learning from the experience of senior soldiers. Adaptability, he believes, is crucial in the military—being able to adjust to changing situations and challenges is what sets successful soldiers apart. His approach to service is grounded in these principles, and he strives to lead by example by showing that with the right mindset and determination, great achievements are within reach.

SPC Cook’s journey with the Iowa National Guard is just beginning, but his dedication to his unit, his community, and his future career as a veterinarian highlights the potential that lies ahead. His story is a testament to the opportunities that military service can provide, and the positive impact it can have on a soldier’s life both in and out of uniform.

Thank you for your service, SPC Cook! 🫡🇺🇸

💥💣 STARTING 2025 WITH A BANG 💣💥

Bushmaster Troop has hit the ground running in 2025, receiving ✌️ new enlistments over the past week!

Trevor Petefish is a Senior at Lincoln High School, and has raised his right hand at 17 years old to become the Iowa Army National Guard’s newest 19D (Cavalry Scout). Trevor is a multi-sport athlete in football 🏈, wrestling 🤼‍♂️, and track 🏃 and he is only going to continue adding to those talents as a scout! 🪖

We are also welcoming Trevor Fitzpatrick, who enlisted as a 09R (ROTC Simultaneous Membership Cadet). Cadet Fitzpatrick is a Sophomore at Iowa State University pursuing his bachelor’s degree 🎓 while also being a member of the Army ROTC program. Go Cyclone Battalion! 🔴🟡 We are excited for the opportunity to forge the next generation of Army leaders! 🫡

A huge thank you to their recruiters, SFC Gomez and SSG Harper, for allowing them to call Bushmaster Troop “home.” We are honored to welcome these two as the newest members of the Bushmaster Troop family, but this is just the beginning of all the great things 2025 has in store for us.

🔔🎊 RINGING IN THE HOLIDAYS 🎊🔔

This past weekend, Bushmaster Troop celebrated its annual holiday party with family, friends, and fellowship. We started off the event with a fantastic meal, followed by door prizes, a special visit from Santa Claus who very closely resembles SPC Seth Lloyd, ornament crafting, festive photo booth, a white elephant gift exchange, ugly Christmas sweater contest, and some well-deserved awards!

Bushmaster Troop was honored to welcome several former Soldiers back to join us for this special occasion. We extended our heartfelt congratulations to SGT Bryce Murano for his outstanding service to Bushmaster Troop. In a bittersweet moment, we presented him with a signed guidon—a token of appreciation from all who will deeply miss him—as he embarks on the next chapter of his military career with the Med Det. While some of our Troopers move on to new opportunities in the military or civilian world, they will always have a place in the Bushmaster family, and our doors remain open to welcome them back.

We bid farewell to some, but also had the privilege of welcoming new honorary Troopers to our ranks. With the support of the SFRG in providing personalized plaques, we extended a warm embrace to a few newborns who are now proudly part of Bushmaster Troop. A special thank you to SGT Christian Hage, SPC Lazarus Frisch, and their families for allowing us to welcome three new honorary Troopers into the Bushmaster family.

Lastly, we extend our deepest gratitude to our Soldier and Family Readiness Group (SFRG) for their incredible contributions in making this event truly unforgettable. From the beautiful decorations and thoughtful door prizes to the gifts for every child in attendance, their dedication went above and beyond. A special thanks to the Beeber family, whose exceptional efforts secured a $1,500 grant from the Deb & Jeff Hansen Foundation to cover the cost of the amazing meal provided by Kue'd Smokehouse. Their support is unmatched, and we are incredibly fortunate to have them as part of our team. Events like this, along with all of our family-centered initiatives, would not be possible without their unwavering commitment.

From our Bushmaster Troop family to all of you and your loved ones, happy holidays! IF YOU AIN’T CAV…🎄🎁🫡

💪 RANGERS LEAD THE WAY 💪

One of Bushmaster Troop’s very own, SPC Joseph Walker, recently completed the Army’s toughest course: Ranger School. His recruiter, SSG Colin Hall, had the distinguished opportunity to witness this hallmark event and congratulate him in becoming an expert in small unit tactics and leadership. 🌟📸 SOLDIER SPOTLIGHT 📸🌟

1st Lieutenant Noah Barr, a native of Urbandale, Iowa, has carved out a distinguished path of service and leadership. Growing up with three younger brothers and attending school in West Des Moines, Barr learned early the value of responsibility and teamwork. He went on to play football at Grandview University 🏈 where he pursued his degree. It was during his time on campus that he felt a pull toward military service. After a conversation with a recruiter, Barr decided to join the ROTC program. In true leadership fashion, he convinced his classmate, 1LT Tanner Vermaas who is currently a Platoon Leader in Bushmaster Troop, to join him that same evening, marking the beginning of their dual service in the Iowa National Guard. 🤝

Barr’s decision to serve was deeply personal. He was inspired by the example set by both his grandfathers—one who served in the Air Force, and the other who fought in the Army during the Vietnam War 🪖 This sense of duty and family legacy reinforced his commitment to serving his country. Barr’s leadership qualities, combined with his passion for service, made him a natural fit for the military.

Currently, Barr is in the process of moving back to Des Moines as his wife concludes her service in the Army. In addition to his military duties, Barr works as a Case Manager at Asuta Health, where he helps oversee patient care and supports the organization’s marketing efforts. His ability to manage multiple roles highlights his dedication both to his career and to helping others.

Family is at the heart of Barr’s life. He cherishes every moment spent with his wife and daughter, finding balance between work, service, and home life. Whether playing pickleball with his wife or engaging in any sport that involves a ball, Barr is always active.

A man of strong faith, Barr is deeply involved in his church community. He participates in men’s groups and serves as a youth ministry coordinator, guiding young people in their spiritual growth ✝️ His faith informs his leadership style, as he strives to serve both his Soldiers and his community with integrity and compassion.

Barr’s military career is filled with standout moments. Among his favorite memories is his baptism during ROTC Basic Camp, a significant personal milestone that also marked the beginning of his relationship with his future wife. Other highlights include working with his Platoon during XCTC prior to arriving at Bushmaster Troop, building lifelong bonds with his fellow soldiers, and completing the physically and mentally taxing Spur Ride—a testament to his endurance and leadership.

Looking ahead, Barr has set several personal and professional goals for himself. He aims to pay off his home and continue advancing his career. He is also preparing himself to develop in his new role as Executive Officer (XO) for Bushmaster Troop. Barr is committed to leading with honor and ensuring the success and well-being of his Soldiers.

His advice to his fellow servicemembers is simple yet profound: find your “why” for serving, something deeper than just the benefits, and use it to drive you through the toughest times. He believes that enduring hardship can provide hope and relief for others and encourages soldiers to seek meaning in their service. Barr also offers his support to anyone who needs it, letting them know they can always come to him for advice or just a listening ear.

Thank you for your service, 1LT Barr! 🇺🇸

🌟 SOLDIER SPOTLIGHT 🌟

SPC Nathan Wilde is a valued member of our team who serves as an 11C Indirect Fire Infantryman, and proudly comes from the local area in Ankeny. Nathan’s commitment to service is deeply rooted in his family’s tradition, with his father having served in the Navy and his uncle currently serving in the Aviation branch in the Iowa National Guard. Driven by this legacy, he joined the Army with a steadfast purpose: to serve his country, advance his education, and continue the family tradition of military service 🫡🪖

After completing his studies in Kinesiology and athletic career at Grand View University, Nathan aspires to become a chiropractor following further studies and athletic involvement at UNI. His athletic achievements include notable performances in football and track—especially the hammer throw—a discipline he plans to continue excelling in at UNI🏅

Beyond his military and academic responsibilities, SPC Wilde is enthusiastic about football, motorcycle riding, and sports. Among his cherished military experiences are the rigorous spur ride and the memorable Stetson break-in ceremony from last year.

Looking ahead, SPC Wilde has ambitious goals: To complete his degree, enjoy a 20-year career in the Army, and potentially become a commissioned or warrant officer. His advice to new Soldiers is both practical and inspiring: Approach your duties with a positive attitude, build strong relationships with fellow soldiers, and make meaningful connections within the unit.

SPC Nathan Wilde exemplifies dedication and resilience, seamlessly integrating his service, education, and athletic pursuits with a clear vision for his future.

Thank you for your service, SPC Wilde! 🇺🇸
