The last few days we noticed even with 6-8 cans of food and free feeding dry food, P*e Wee was losing weight rapidly. He had also increased his cough and seemed to be panting more than before and uncomfortable at times. We made an appointment to have him seen. Unfortunately, we discovered he had progressed into heart failure and we made the agonizing decision to let him go before he had to suffer any further.

I was so gutted after I came home I just couldn’t bear to post. It felt completely alien going into the oldies this morning and not having his head over the railing greeting me.

P*e Wee was a once in a lifetime dog. And even though he was so worried and stressed when he first arrived, he still did his absolute best to make the best of it. He sat on laps, he went on long walks, he watched Disney movies and hung out on the sofa with the kids. He bellowed his massive bark at all the chickens when they walked past. He watched me over the fence line constantly, always waiting for me to come back in with a cookie.

I’ve discussed before here, and I do to every person who surrenders an old dog, that the stress of the transition can absolutely expedite any underlying physical issues the animal may have. We always hope it doesn’t, but sometimes, it does. Sometimes I believe it’s the animal finally feeling like they are now safe to die; they don’t have to hold on any more, and sometimes I think it’s the animal responding to the emotional distress. I can never know which one it is, but I know this is what happened to P*e Wee, and all we could do was support him and love him and give him the death he deserved. His head on my lap, his giant paws on my arm, and his last breath with me whispering how much I loved him.

P*e Wee come visit anytime. I can still hear you bellowing so I know you are not far. I love you so much, thank you for being so amazing. It wasn’t long but I hope it was long enough.
