One of the best ways to start the day with your dog is with a good walk. This doesn’t have to be anything crazy. Just a few minutes of a calm walk, working on some obedience and focus is all you need. It’s a great way to get out, practice, release some energy for your dog, and improve your relationship by working on obedience through distractions. By doing this regularly you can change a walk with your dog from a chore, to a fun and rewarding experience for both of you. Just remember to be patient and work on your obedience incrementally. Bailey’s loose leash walking has come so far and I’m super proud of her. You can really see how engaged she is with me. She stays close, watches my movements, and does not try to cut me off or walk away to do something else. She is doing really well! Bailey has A LOT of energy to let out. So, it’s our job as the handler to give her something that is a little more engaging as she is constantly looking for the next thing to put her attention towards. Making ourselves more fun, exciting, and interesting is what will help us to keep our dogs attention. It’s important to keep this in mind as we work on impulse control and duration exercises. These can be much harder for her to grasp than a dog that doesn’t have as much drive. While Bailey doesn’t have a serious behavioral issues, she does struggle with controlling her excitement as well as some basic obedience skill sets like loose leash walking. Join me and dixie for a look into one of our practice sessions. I absolutely love being able to take a dog out into a real world environment and work on obedience through distractions. It’s one thing to have it down at home, and another to put it in play in real scenarios. As you can see dixie has come a long way in her confidence and obedience skills. I truly believe this is due to proper exposure to higher stimulation environments. Having the ability to calmly work in these environments doesn’t happen on the first try. Dixie is in her final week of training and it has been amazing to watch her progress! She has become so much more confident in her commands, surroundings, and in herself. Today we got out into the real world to help Dixie build her confidence and focus through distractions and she did really well! Given this being the first time we got out into a high distraction environment I wasn’t expecting too much from her. Just simple commands like sit, down, stay, and a short heel walk (All things we have already worked on in low distraction) Knowing that Dixie is a bit fearful and skittish of people she doesn’t know, i simply asked anyone that showed interest to just ignore her. I wanted Dixie to have calm interactions around as many new people, places, sounds, and objects as possible. This helps to push her out of her comfort zone in a healthy and positive way. Did you see her in the beginning? Her distance threshold has certainly improved from day 1! I can still hear the jingle of her collar as she unknowingly (and happily i might add) would break her stay to “come say hi” 😂. She means no harm, but it doesn’t make it any easier when we’re trying to work on stay command. I know many of you struggle with this at home too. Patience and repetition has been the key to breaking and furthering Dixie’s thresholds and this will continue to be the case. Slowly building distance and positively reinforcing her good behaviors is so important. (This also helps build confidence!) Honestly, the best part of working with dogs is watching them transform throughout the process and achieve success. You get to see how the smallest steps of improvement turn into the largest wins for the dog. Then how those wins turn into confidence, happiness, and excitement.
