Vaginal atresia is a congenital condition where the lower portion of the va**na fails to properly form, and this seems to be a condition affecting several of Lily's precious girls.
The vet we've spoken with believes that there is a low chance for any of these babies to experience complications since they're all doing well at this age, and states most rats with this condition live a perfectly normal life.
That said there is increased risk with these girls for health concerns during their lifetime. We realized this issue only a couple of days ago and immediately reached out to the families that had reserved them, as we are always transparent about the health of our rats. One family chose to keep their reservations, the other opted to wait for a different litter.
We are making 4 of these lovely ladies available to a forever pet home, including the two we had planned to hold back for ourselves. This is a heartbreaking decision that has taken time to come to terms with, but is the right move for the long term goals of the rattery. Despite how nice these babies are, we must find another route to amazing temperments that does not cause any increased health concerns during the rat's life.
We do intend to pair Lily again to a different buck in hopes of an unaffected litter. We will have to work carefully with her descendents to minimize the risk of another litter with this condition. Depending on how successful we are able, her line may be able to be continued or there is the possibility it will have to end and we will have to focus our attentions elsewhere. Time will tell.
