Hello FACT FRIDAY!

On Fridays we highlight an axolotl available for purchase by a breeder and share axolotl facts and history.

The reason we should avoid touching axolotls is because they're protected by a slime coat that covers their skin. This slime coat serves the purpose of keeping bacteria, viruses, and other harmful substances out, so it's absolutely vital it stays intact.

The slime coat can easily be damaged by lots of things: bumping into something sharp or rough, poor water quality, and excessive handling, to name the most common.

If your axolotl is shedding its slime coat, it will be quite noticeable, it will appear as if a mucus is shedding off their skin. This should be a red flag for owners to treat them as appropriate based on the cause.

Imagine if humans relied on something as fragile to protect us, we'd sure be picky about our surroundings too!

Today’s baby is a copper looking to be housed in a mansion by himself, The Lazy Lotl LLC has him looking for new 🌊! Go check him out!

Hello FACT FRIDAY!

On Fridays we highlight an axolotl available for purchase by a breeder and share axolotl facts and history.

Today we’re talking about axolotl diet.

Did you know we’re not completely sure what the exact dietary needs are for axolotls? There is a lot of speculation and we know what does and doesn’t work for our gilled friends, but scientists haven’t confirmed their exact needs.

What we DO know, a study confirmed that axolotls benefit more from a simple diet of the same variety, rather than humans who care about eating the same foods every day. They’re happy to eat worms every day, and it meets whatever their dietary requirements actually are!

(Imagine having sandwiches for every meal, hard for us to comprehend)

So when you’re trying to decide what to feed your axolotls, always reach for those trusty worms, they’re easy to feed and will make your little one happy as can be!

Today we’re highlighted this lovely wild by Critters in the Valley that is showing off their beautiful gold markings! Pop on over to them if you’re interested in this cutie and giving them a forever home!

Our memorial for indo, he’s now laid to rest. 💔 now he has all the worms 🪱

Do your research and take care of your axolotls, substrate can be deadly and shouldn’t be taken lightly.

Hey everyone! It's been a while since we posted an update, this post is going to be a bit long, so apologies ahead of time.

We moved and are in a much better space for raising our axolotls! We're planning on getting our first axolotls to sell in the coming month, we'll keep you posted! we now have a website with everything super organized, check it out in our bio.

It's also with a very heavy heart we have to announce our mosaic axolotl, Indo, has passed. He was sick for quite a while and last week was finally diagnosed with impaction from sand. They performed an operation, but he sadly died shortly after, during recovery. We are devastated over here at Lunar Lotls, but we hope that his passing can raise awareness of how dangerous substrate can be for axolotls. He was on the recommended substrate (CaribSea Moonlight sand) and despite this, he still became impacted.

Bare bottom tanks, slate, or something otherwise impossible for these little guys to eat, is highly recommended by us here and we won't be placing sand into any more of our aquariums going forward.

We have also decided to make this little man our mascot, so look to see rebranding around here as we grieve and prepare for our new babies.

Everyone stay safe and have a great holiday!

Hey guys, here’s my axolotl care guide! It includes information on cycling, tank requirements, feeding, etc!

The minimum tank size for an axolotl is a 40-gallon breeder, as anything smaller isn’t suitable for their size. It also requires far less maintenance with water changes, to keep the water suitable. If you’re cohabiting, the minimum is 30 gallons + per axolotl. So the smallest tank size for two i...

This is what we do! Here at Ethical Axolotls, we individually raise all axolotls from hatching. Some of those cups contain just a single egg.

Individually raising axolotls (as well as managing clutch size) is an important factor in ensuring absolutely no nips or injuries occur in the process of growing.

I cohabitate my adults, and there are risks in this. I've had nips happen before, and they will again. Fortunately, keeping axolotls well fed and giving them a minimum of 30 gallons per adult minimizes this, but the risk is always there.

This is why I individually raise. I want all of my axolotls to make it to their homes in perfect condition, because my buyers expect nothing less.

Strohl's Herptiles, Critters in the Valley, Aaryn's Animals, all individually raise their axolotls as well, and I'm proud to know each of these breeders on a first name basis.

I hope to someday see every breeder individually raise their babies, because from the very instant of hatching, these little ones deserve nothing less than the best.

Thanks for reading! All (please hold, counting....)

(Still counting...)

(WAIT I missed one...)

33 axolotls, save for a couple hold backs, will be available for homes in three month's time!
