“We are seeing practitioners aging out and retiring from the field, or leaving food and farm animal medicine for other aspects of medicine or a different profession completely due to quality of life and work-life-balance reasons,” said Dr. Aubrey Vena of Cambria Veterinary Care. “There aren’t many new veterinarians entering the field of large animal medicine to replace them.”

A shortage of large animal veterinarians — in the state and across the nation — will have detrimental effects on the agricultural industry if left unchecked, ag officials said. “If our veterinary workforce is not adequately staffed and prepared, in the event of an animal health emergency, ther...

PSA to all of our horse owners out there:
Please be aware that there have been confirmed cases of EHV-1 (Equine Herpes Virus) close to home.

Many of you will know EHV as "rhino" or rhinopneumonitis, which can result in upper respiratory infection in young horses and abortion in pregnant mares. But many don't realize that in rare instances, EHV can also cause a severe neurological disease referred to as equine herpes myeloencephalopathy (EHM) in adult horses.
EHV-1 is spread through coughing or sneezing (from which aerosolized viral particles can spread up to 35 feet), direct contact with infected horses, as well as contaminated feed, equipment, clothing, and tack. Often, the earliest signs of disease are a fever, limb edema (swelling), and nasal discharge, but any neurologic symptoms like incoordination, inability to stand, or urine dribbling should also be immediately reported to your veterinarian.

Luckily, the equine herpes virus is easily killed by disinfectants, and is included in most core vaccination schedules, so this is a good time to ensure that all of your horses are adequately vaccinated and that you practice good biosecurity both in your barn and at competitions and shows. If your horses will be in contact with others or traveling off the farm, you might consider boosting the EHV-1 vaccine. Additionally, if your barn is acquiring new horses (especially those coming from sale barns or auctions) or horses that are returning from a high-risk situation (shows or competitions), these horses should be quarantined for at least 21 days.

While EHV and particularly EHM are scary, the goal of sharing this information is not to cause a panic, but rather to encourage all of our horse owners to be smart about your decisions for your horses in the coming weeks!
For more information, take a look at the American Association of Equine Practitioners' EHV FAQs: https://aaep.org/horsehealth/faq-equine-herpesvirus-ehv and please feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns regarding EHV, EHM, or other equine infectious diseases!
