Happy December! The lodge is switching directions to long term housing per room so we are selling off the extra beds. We set up an auction so you can bid. All pieces will need picked up and you will need to bring help to load and haul.

The off-season is the perfect time to take a step back and evaluate your horse’s performance during the competitive season.

By identifying and addressing specific weaknesses, you can enhance their overall performance and set the stage for a successful return to the arena.

Here’s how you can effectively target and work on those areas:

1.) Analyze Times and Patterns: Compare your runs to your goals. Did your horse lose time in transitions, widen their turns, or show signs of fatigue?

2.) Physical Signs: Pay attention to any soreness, stiffness, or reluctance during rides that might indicate physical limitations or discomfort.

3.) Build Skills Through Drills
• Pole Work: Add pole exercises to improve agility, balance, and coordination.
• Serpentine Patterns: Work on serpentines to enhance lateral flexibility and responsiveness.
• Transitions: Frequent transitions between gaits keep your horse sharp and focused on your cues, which translates to better performance during a run.

4.) Strengthen Physical Capabilities
• Hill Work: Build muscle and strength by riding up and down inclines. This is especially helpful for hind-end engagement, which is critical for tight turns.
• Backing Drills: Backing your horse in a straight line or on a curve improves hindquarter strength and coordination.
• Core Strengthening: Use exercises like walking over raised poles or small jumps to build your horse’s core muscles, aiding balance and control.

Blanketing your pasture horses:

In most cases, blankets aren’t necessary unless you notice your horse struggling to keep itself warm in the cold. If you do decide to use a blanket, keep these tips in mind:

1.) Choose the Right Blanket for Wet Conditions: If it’s damp or rainy, make sure the blanket is moisture-wicking so your horse stays dry and comfortable.

2.) Beware of Wet Blankets: A wet blanket can actually make a horse colder than if it just had its natural winter coat.

3.) Check Regularly for Skin Health: Take the blanket off frequently to look for skin irritation or infection signs.

Ensure a Good Fit: The blanket should fit your horse comfortably without causing rubbing or chafing.

Before buying a blanket, allow your horse a chance to adapt to the cold. Nature may surprise you with a perfectly adequate winter coat!
