This little lady has been hanging out around the chicken coop the last few weeks. I’m gonna just let her do her thing eating flies. She’s fun to look at while feeding any ways. God is an artist with each creation he makes. She is so pretty!

Looks like me and the little have our work cut out for us. This is our first harvest of elderberries from our hedge. There’s 3x as many not yet ready to pick. We have some cough syrup and tinctures to make to get us through cold season.

Note to self: When soaking the elderberries in apple cider vinegar water to kill bugs. It’s best to do it outside. NOT in the kitchen sink. I emphasize NOT! The amount of spiders and stink bugs I had to squash that came in droves out of the clusters was insane.

PRO TIP: to easily remove the elderberries use a fork. It’s like your brushing hair and makes quick work. It’s oddly satisfying. 🤪 Kids like this satisfaction to.

Years ago I used to do cut flower arrangements. Just for fun. I enjoyed it. A lot. Wild flowers, perennials, whatever was growing.

Life happened. You get busy. You grow older. Get married, have a family, keep yourself busy with work or a farm. Forget to stop every once in a while and smell the roses. Maybe take a few inside. Enjoy what you’ve grown. We get to busy and blindsided by what we think is important vs what actually is.

Today changes this. Even though it’s for a funeral we will be attending, I reminded of how short life is. Take your time for those you have tended and until they bloom. Smell those roses. The bloom doesn’t last forever.

🥒🥒🥒🥒🥒🥒🥒🥒🥒

Our garden was late this year so we have been very impatient in waiting to pick. FINALLY!!! It starts. Straight eight slicing cucumbers. No bad for the first picking. Filled half of a five gallon bucket. Talk to me in a month. I’m sure I will hate life and cucumbers at this time. Lol. Nah! It’s all a blessing!

Well this is a first on the farm. Yesterday morning I woke up and went to go get my coffee. I was scheduled to put a clutch of Peking’s on lockdown in the Hatcher. I thought I heard a muffled “cheep cheep” in the Hatcher. I had some eggs on lockdown that where probably done but I figured one could be late. It happens. 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️I went and checked. Nope. No one had hatched. Maybe I just heard cheeps from the brooder tote in the living room which has 4 Peking ducks. I meandered through the rest of my morning as usual. When I went to get the clutch of eggs for lockdown I found this little buddy stuck b***y down in the incubator. 😂😂😂 Apparently he couldn’t wait. He had a schedule to keep.

So this is our first time growing castor bean flowers 💐. I acquired a variety of seeds in a trade years ago and haven’t grown them. I didn’t anticipate the size with my placement. These plants are huge! The leaves are so big. They would make a good back drop foliage growth. The flower unfortunately is a little dissatisfying for me. I was hoping for a huge flower. Maybe it will pick up later. The plant is really cool though.

Of course we have the Four O’Clock madness as well. This is the chicken pen flower bed. So I let things get a little invasive and crazy here. 🤪🤪🤪

Tomatoes 🍅 I plant here are also doing well. I love tomato flowers. Always have and always will. My first flower love. Something so very small, fragile, and delicate. God made in such a way to carry and yield such large fruits! Super cool to me.

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Introducing the best “Corn Chucker”, as she so eloquently put it 😂, in Jones Oklahoma.

This kid seriously rocks at it. I was pitting sand plums while she was starting on a bushel of corn. She comes by it honestly. Her daddy worked in the corn fields as a kid and has “chucked” many ears of corn. 😂😂😂

Aside from learning how to properly shuck corn. She also learned how to blanch corn before freezing. In addition, she learned a valuable mommy hack. Use. Cherry pitter to pit sand plums. Makes easy work.

Would anyone be interested in these two handsome fellas? There both the Americauna breed.

I occasionally take unwanted roosters Wednesday evening and will take them to the local auction on Thursday. Well as it happens the auction closed for the first time to my knowledge yesterday. So now I’m stuck with these bros until I can find them there own farm.

Send us a pm for inquiries. Farm pick up Jones Ok.

I hope these memories stick with you little one. I hope when your older and we have grandkids everyone flocks to my house during the summer to make a day trip. I hope you come running to mammas house for wild sand plum jelly.

We thank God for blessing us with you and these sweet memories. I hope and pray you absorb this knowledge like a sponge. These are forgotten ways we are trying to resurface. It’s starts with you.

So this was her first trip this past weekend sand plumb picking. This is something her daddy and I did on the regular, as a date, before she was born. She’s old enough now. Time to teach. Unfortunately she was also taught first hand at our expense what stinging nettle was. Lol. But she also was well aware of what poison ivy was while we where out. This kid is savy with life I tell ya. We pour all of our resources into this precious child. It was a good day. A Blessed day.

😜

Hi guys!

Just bc we’re slowing down on our hatching for the season doesn’t mean we can’t still hatch for you!
🥚🐣🐥🐓

If your thinking about starting your own flock and haven’t pulled the trigger we have you covered. You can inquire about our hatching eggs and do a hatch to order (1doz min), ooooor if you’ve found hatching eggs for a specific breed you want we can do this as well. If you don’t have an incubator or if the incubation process is intimidating we got you. A lot of times it can be cheaper to incubate rather than purchase chicks. Send us a message! 👍🏻

We also have chicks still looking for there forever flock! 🐣🐥🥰As well as flower and garden starts! 🌸💐🌺🌱🍅🍠

Keep in mind next newzealand weaning is on the 15th! 🐰🐇

So we have this stubborn broody hen duck. This is first having a duck go broody and trying to break her. We have had plenty of chickens go broody and turkey. Never a duck.

We hadn’t planned on letting her sit bc we are going to move our Peking flock to a new pen. I’ve kicked her off the nest multiple times. I’ve, very guiltily, destroyed her immaculate nest that she so very carefully built and lined with feathers. She would just rebuild.

So we where faced with one of two options. Either cage her with some ice packs, which is kind of a pain. Or let her sit.

I happen to have a clutch of Peking eggs that was ready to go on lockdown. So I gave her four. It’s been a few days. One has hatched. The other three have not.

Now what to do? 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️ Pull the duckling and eggs. Or continue to let her sit? Will she continue to sit on these eggs if they don’t hatch? If I pull the chick to go with the others will she still be broody?

Im concerned bc she is in a pen with other ducks and poultry. But regardless. This is a first on the farm. Letting nature take its course and allowing her to hatch something. She’s a good mamma. Doesn’t want me around her nest at all. Lol. 😂
