The hurried rush of school schedules means families are spending more time focused on school activities and less time with their pets. Here are a few tips to help pets cope with back-to-school schedules and your children’s shift in attention.

1) Work with your children to set and follow a daily routine that works for their lifestyle all year long. The schedule should include feeding, walks for your pet's potty time and appropriate play at approximately the same time everyday. Establishing a routine your pet can depend on will help them adjust to other changes that may occur.
2) Save a special toy that your pet really loves and have your children give it to them just before they leave home. Put it away again once the children return home so it remains a “special toy”.
3) Hide favorite pet treats around the house for your pets to discover while you are away. Rubber Kong toys can be stuffed with peanut butter or cream cheese and can even be frozen for a long lasting treat!
4) Encourage your children to come home right away to care for their pet’s needs and jump into a fun game of “fetch” or “cat and mouse” before starting other after school activities.
5) Plan fun after school activities for your children to do with their pets – build a cat tree, plan a family game of soccer or go for a hike together. Encourage children to spend quiet time reading out loud to their pets and record it so it can be played back while pets are home alone.

These are just a few of the fun and pet-friendly activities you and your children can do to help keep your pet happy and content. Don’t hesitate to write your own back-to-school plan and get creative. Ask your children for their ideas too!

Today is very sad for us here at Hilltop. It is Skyler's last day with us! She is off to vet school! We are so proud of you and know great things are in store for you! Hey everyone! This is Dr. Davis with a public service announcement. I worked a shift at our local emergency clinic yesterday and had 5 cases of suspected kennel cough. The dogs were from various boarding daycares in the area. So please beware of the symptoms and seek help if your dog goes to daycare, boards, or goes to a groomer and now has a cough. Kennel cough is not likely to cause death but it can make your dog sick. It seems like once we see a case or two then the whole Northeast Arkansas area has an outbreak. No boarding facility is immune to the spread of a coughing bug. Also be sure your dog is up to date on vaccinations.
