Our volunteers help NAFA provide - education, adoption, rescue, disaster relief, low cost spay/neuter, and fun community events. At this time, w

e do not have a "shelter". All of our animals are kept in foster homes. we are very fortunate to have a group of dedicated foster homes to help socialize the animals. Animals in foster care receive special attention and are worked with so they can more easily adopt to a home environment. We hold vaccination clinics, cat neuters, fun events, training events, and education events.

Distemper Alert. The partner relationship between Jonesboro Animal Services and NAFA Rescue enables us provide information and services for families to be proactive against pet diseases in Northeast Arkansas.

In the last few days, Jonesboro Animal Services picked up a sick raccoon. It turned out to be infected with Distemper. Distemper is spread through direct contact or airborne exposure, rather like the common cold in humans, however humans can not get the disease. When an infected dog or wild animal coughs, sneezes, or barks, it releases aerosol droplets into the environment, infecting nearby animals and surfaces, like food and water bowls. It can also be passed from pregnant dogs to pups through placenta.

The virus attacks the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems of dogs.. Luckily dogs that are current on core vaccinations are protected against this virus. It is highly contagious and potentially lethal.

Please check with your veterinarian to be sure your pet is current on core vaccinations.

Thank you Diana Davis for sharing this photo. This is our friend and NAFA Volunteer - Margie Sain. She stood on the corner in the heat and humidity of Jonesboro with several other people collecting money for the United Cajun Navy Relief. The United Cajun Navy has been providing crucial aid and relief efforts to communities in the Western North Carolina after Hurricane Helene. The groups of volunteers is helping with search and rescue operations, recovery assistance and supply distribution.

It is very rare that I recommend making a donation to a nation animal association. However, this is one of those occasions where I know the work that is going on for animals to move from shelters in the devastation of Helene. Greater Good Charities Transport is moving shelter Pets to Safety.

In the wake of Helene, they are on the ground evacuating shelter pets from South Carolina and sending them to shelters that can care for them in Wisconsin. This will make massive differences for shelters in the area and help free up space for local found pets.

As cats and dogs seek shelter care due to the hurricane, overwhelmed animal shelters in the region impacted by Hurricane Helene NEED our help. Upon arrival at their new shelters, each cat and dog will receive an exam and any veterinary care they may need to ensure they are healthy, unharmed, and ready for adoption.

If you are considering giving to a national charity helping animals we recommend this project.

In rescue you never know what any day will bring. Our rescue of starved and injured puppies on Saturday, certainly was not even on our radar until law enforcement contacted us. The puppies are now safe. Most of their ears were infected inside and they have been treated, started on antibiotics. Special feeding is also helping them to get on their feet.

Thank you Deputy R, Caitlin, Shelia and Jackson for helping with transport, fostering, etc. Without you this would not have been possible.

Did you know you can donate your pacemaker in your will to help dogs. Humans are not allowed to donate pacemakers to other people, but you may be surprised to find out they can be donated to a dog.

You see, dogs can use pacemakers just like humans, and a human pacemaker works in dogs. Best of all, humans can leave a note in their will to allow the pacemaker to be removed and donated to save a dog’s life. And there are plenty of dogs that need pacemakers.

According to a recent article, 10% of all dogs and 75% of senior dogs die or suffer from congestive heart failure or heart disease. And studies from the NIH and veterinary clinics across the country share similar stats like this one for senior dogs and this one about heart disease in dogs.

One study from the University of Minnesota showed that 86% of dogs survived up to a year after the pacemaker was installed, with a 65% survival rate three years later. And this study from the NIH showed dogs that have atrial standstill survived 866 days longer because of the pacemaker.

There are two common ways people transfer their pacemakers to a dog. The first is to have your will modified so that when you pass away, there are instructions to have it removed and sent to the clinic of your choice. The other is to request your doctor save the pacemaker for donation when yours is being replaced or upgraded.

And the good news, there is no shortage of programs and places you can donate your pacemaker to in order to save a dog’s life:

- Your local veterinary hospital where they perform heart surgeries
- Local animal shelters can provide you with options if they have partnerships with medical facilities
- Colleges and universities with veterinary medicine programs

When your pacemaker is no longer needed for your life, see if you can give life to another by donating it to a furry friend! SPREAD THE WORD!

Our Story

Northeast Arkansans for Animals (NAFA) is a non-profit, tax-deductible rescue organization for animals. We are concerned about the welfare of animals. NAFA has no paid employees, instead a dedicated group of volunteers works to fulfill our Mission Statement:

NAFA Mission Statement – since the first puppy mill rescue of 161 dogs in 1992, our mission has remained the same … to promote the humane treatment of animals and the people who loved them in Northeast Arkansas and surrounding communities through, rescue, abuse investigation, advocacy, education, disaster training and response, as well as low cost services. NAFA strives to elevate animals in our society, enhancing connections and transforming the bond between animals, people and our communities, instilling respect for all living things.

NAFA has no “shelter”. Instead we work to keep pets in their loving homes and prevent the birth of unwanted dogs and cats through vaccination clinics, cat neuters, fun events, training events, and education events. If you would like to volunteer, please email [email protected].
