This is Snowflake ❄️ He is absolutely adorable and likes to hang out with you. He loves to destroy his toys and act like a bossy boy. What Snowflake doesn’t like are other animals or birds. He would need to be the only pet in the house.

Happy New Year every one!

2023 was a very eventful year. I was able to place 6 birds into new homes, figured out a better system for cleaning and caring for all the birds here, had 2 major surgeries (still healing from most recent) and realized how deep my heart is, far deeper than my pockets.

This year, I challenge you to help a rescue. Volunteer your time. If you don’t have time and have a few extra dollars a month, choose a rescue and make recurring donations. Every dollar counts toward helping to save heartbeats.

Petey was adopted by a wonderful bird mommy a couple days before Christmas! He was welcomed home by a male M2 and another male U2. I’m so happy for this guy, because he is really an amazing boy!

Y’all! Seriously! This is Habeeb (I call him Beeber ❤️), a greater sulfer. Sweetest guy ever! He is somewhere around 35 years old. He was with his owner a long time before needing to be surrendered.

Today was the first event Birds and Beaks has hosted and it went very well, considering the ugly weather we had!

I was able to raise some “food money” for the parrots and connected with other rescues as well.

Anyone interested in target training, this is an awesome opportunity.

A lot of people who come into the store are amazed with how well our birds stay on their stands. Even though we do have a few instances each day where one of the birds gets spooked by a loud noise or sudden change and takes off, for the most part we can trust the birds we have out to not fly off, to the point where people ask us daily how we do it and if the birds are clipped. Most all of our birds are fully flighted, are great flyers in fact, but are trained to stay on the stand.

One of the best way to station train is using target training and giving them high value treats when they are on the stand. The next question we hear is “how does touching a stick make them stay on a stand?” Well, it’s all about creating a clear “language” between you and your bird.

Target training is a very clear way to ask your bird to go to certain places. It can be translated to hundreds of behaviors, from staying on a stand, to getting back into the cage, learning how to play with toys, giving restraint-free nail trims, to a variety of other mentally stimulating activities.

If you are unsure how to get started with training, we have a wonderful new class this Sunday, October 15th, at 1:00pm EST taught by Cassie Malina, a renowned trainer that has been training birds and people for over 20 years! I am personally very excited about this new class! Hope to see you guys there (virtually!).

Oscar visited Dr Scott MacDonald today! She has some issues with both her wings not being able to fully extend, one worse than the other. We suspect she was cage bound at some point in her life. Other than that, she appears to be a healthy military macaw who is ready to find her forever home!
