There are many benefits to teaching your dog to down. Here are a few:

* It can help to prevent jumping. When your dog is in a down position, it is much less likely to jump up on people or other animals. This can be helpful for both safety and politeness.

* Reduced stress and anxiety. For some dogs, the down position can be a calming and relaxing place to be. This can be helpful for dogs who are feeling stressed or anxious.

* It can make grooming easier. When your dog is in a down position, it is much easier to brush them, trim their nails, or give them a bath. This can save you time and frustration.

Teaching your dog to down is a simple but effective way to improve their behavior and make your life easier. If you're not sure where to start, give us a call, we can help, 417-825-7810.

Happy Mother's Day to All the Dog Moms Out There!

Mother's Day is a time to celebrate all the wonderful mothers in our lives, and that includes dog moms! Dog moms are the ones who take care of their furry babies, train them, and love them unconditionally. They are truly the best moms there are.

If you're a dog mom, you know that training your dog can be a challenge, but it's also one of the most rewarding experiences. Watching your dog learn and grow is an amazing feeling, and it's all thanks to your patience and dedication.

Here are a couple of tips for training your dog on Mother's Day:

Be patient and consistent. Training a dog takes time and patience. Don't get discouraged if your dog doesn't learn a command right away. Just keep practicing and they'll eventually get it.

Make it fun. Training should be fun for both you and your dog. If your dog is not having fun, they're less likely to want to learn. Try to make training sessions short and engaging, and use positive reinforcement, like treats or praise, to reward your dog for good behavior.

With a little patience and consistency, you can train your dog to be a well-behaved member of the family.

The "place" command is a valuable tool for dog owners. It can be used to teach your dog to settle down in a specific spot, whether you're at home, at the vet, or in a crowded place. It can also be used to keep your dog out of trouble, such as when you're cooking dinner or having guests over.

Here are some tips for teaching your dog the "place" command:

* Be patient and consistent. It may take some time for your dog to learn the command.
* Use positive reinforcement. Reward your dog with treats and praise when they do the command correctly.
* Make the mat or bed a comfortable and inviting place for your dog.
* Start in a quiet area with few distractions.
* Gradually add distractions as your dog masters the command.
* Be patient and consistent. It may take some time for your dog to learn the command.

Preparing Your Home for Your New Dog

Before you bring your new dog home, you should consider pet-proofing your house, such as putting up baby gates, escape-proofing the backyard, making sure that there is nothing harmful lying around that your dog can put in their mouth... the list goes on and on.

You'll also need supplies such as leashes and collars, toys, food, food bowls and treats--and don't forget about bedding! Dogs love their own blankets just as much as humans do.

It also helps to set up some rules for everyone in the house to follow. Who will walk your dog and when? How often will you feed your dog and when? Will your dog be allowed on the furniture? Where will they sleep at night? Are there any rooms in the house that are off-limits?

The first few weeks are quite important and can feel overwhelming. There are some big changes and adjustments for both you and your pooch. If you need some help give us a call, 417-825-7810.

Adopting the Right Dog

Once you've decided to adopt a dog, the next step is choosing the right one for your family. You should consider several factors when making this decision.

Are you ready for the commitment?
The life expectancy of a dog could be anywhere from 10 to 15 years depending on size and breed.

Are you very active?
You’ll need a dog that can keep up.

Allergies?
Some dogs shed a lot more than others.

What about the financial investment of owning a dog?
Did you know that the average yearly cost for owning a dog can be as much as $2000?

Do you have other dogs or animals in your household?
Some rescue dogs may have a previous history of living with other dogs and/or cats. Be sure to ask.

Do you have children?
Some dogs can be timid or fearful and young children may not be a good fit.

Before you begin the adoption process, it is important to find out everything that you need to know to make the right choices for you and your new dog!

The Benefits of Adopting a Dog

Adopting a dog is one of the most rewarding experiences you can have. Dogs are loyal, playful and loving companions who will happily spend their days by your side. They provide unconditional love and friendship in return for nothing more than food and shelter--and they're great at keeping you active!

Adopting a dog also teaches responsibility: if someone else depends on you to take care of them, then it's important that you do so as best as possible. This includes feeding them regularly (but not too much), brushing their fur regularly (but not too hard) and making sure they get enough exercise (but not too much). A new pet owner may need some guidance at first but soon learns how easy it is once he/she gets into the routine!

What is “Recall” and why is it important to teach to a dog?

Recall is the “Come” command. The “come” command is one of the most important commands to teach a dog. It can help keep your pet safe and as well as provide a way to control their behavior in certain situations. Teaching the come command can be done in a few simple steps, but it requires patience and consistency on your part. With practice, your pup will be able to respond quickly when called upon, making them a more obedient and well-behaved pooch.

What is crate training and what are its benefits?

Crate training is a method of teaching dogs to become familiar and comfortable with their crate, while also helping them learn basic house rules. It is an effective way of potty training, as well as teaching dogs to stay in one place when left alone. Crate training also helps build trust between the dog and its owner, making it easier for both parties to interact. Crate training can provide a variety of benefits such as reducing anxiety and stress levels, promoting good behavior and preventing destructive behaviors. Additionally, it can help keep your home clean by discouraging your dog from chewing on furniture or other items in the house.

HAPPY HAPPY HUCKLEBERRY NEWS!!!! DUKE HAS BEEN ADOPTED!!
Duke has been one of the longer residents of Huckleberry Rescue. We tried and tried everything we knew how to find this good boy a home. Tim house, crate, car and obedience trained Duke in record time and even found him a home with a lifelong friend. Duke now has a human sister that he absolutely adores. It was love at first sight for both Duke and family!!! Duke marks the 27th dog Huckleberry Rescue has successfully rehabilitated and homed in our partnership with We Train Dogs Joplin. Breaking news: Tank brings joy and happiness to his new owner!!!

Yesterday brought new meaning to what dog rescue is all about. Tank begins his new life as a Service Dog specializing in PTSD. It was a beautiful experience to see these two together. Tank sensed how much his new owner truly needed him. A sense of calm immediately came over both dog and human. The transformation was immediate. Last night his new owner slept through the night. Something he hasn’t been able to do for a very long time. A big thank you to Tim Wallander of We Train Dogs Joplin for getting Tank adoption ready and for donating his time to continue training dog and human for service dog work. Truly a very happy Huckleberry ending!!!

Question: How do I stop my puppy from p*eing in her crate?

Answer: Make sure the crate is of the correct size. A correctly sized crate should be large enough for her to turn around, stand up and lie down, but snug enough to not allow her to p*e in one corner and sleep comfortably in the other. Many crates come with partitions so you can adjust the size as your puppy grows. If your crate does not have a partition you can put a cardboard box inside of it or some other material so that you can divide and limit the space inside.

Feeding on a schedule allows you to predict when your puppy needs to eliminate. It is recommended that you break up your puppy feeding schedule into three small meals. Another thing to keep in mind is the food itself, which should be the highest quality puppy food. Whatever you choose, make sure it agrees with your puppy.

Establishing a pattern is vital to potty training success. I would recommend taking your puppy out every hour or two in the beginning.

If your dog has an accident don’t make a fuss, just clean it up. Use a cleaner that kills odors, something that will remove the scent so the dog will not go there again in the future.

Scolding a puppy for soiling your rug, especially after the fact, isn’t going to do anything. Some older methods of punishment, like rubbing a dog’s nose in her p**p or urine doesn’t work either! Remember that when it comes to potty training, prevention is the key.

Congratulations Bridgette!!!

Bridgette recently completed our Basic Obedience Program.

Bridgette is full of energy and before enrolling in our program, she struggled with paying attention, jumping on people, and pulling on the leash. Now, she no longer jumps or pulls and also greets people appropriately. Most importantly, she has a clear understanding of when it’s time for play and when it’s time for obedience. Fantastic job, Bridgette!

Say hello to Maverick, a fun loving Doodle in his third week of In-Home Basic Training.

This week he is working on the “Place” command. The “Place” command is much more than simply training your dog to go to a specific place, such as a dog bed, mat, raised platform. It’s your management command, your impulse control command, and your CALMNESS command. The “Place” accomplishes it all.

Duration work like the “Place” command is going to help him slow his mind down and learn a calmer mentality- things that will greatly benefit him and his owners. Especially, when guests come over to visit!

Please help.

Please help.

This image is hard to look at. But, this is a reality for rescue and it's one of the reasons we ask for donations.

Chase was turned in to us yesterday.
He has a head to tail case of demodex mange. He's covered in uncomfortable scabs and raw sores.
As if that isn't enough for this boy to deal with, he's also got a hip injury from possibly being hit by a car. The vet thinks that this will eventually need amputation once the mange is treated and his immune system is back to normal.

This means that Chase will be with us for a long time as a medical case before he can be available for adoption. And this will get expensive.

If you can, please consider donating toward Chase's medical care. Even $1 helps and is appreciated.
If you can't donate, please just hit that Share button and lets get Chase better together.
