What's your favorite winter time activity to do with your dog?
Mine is letting my dogs run around in the snow! It's their favorite thing, which makes it my favorite thing too. They're just so cute! 😍

Dogs will learn a set of rules even if you aren't knowingly teaching them rules. Make sure you're teaching them the right things.

If you greet a dog who is jumping on you they have now learned
jumping = attention.

One benefit of training is avoiding these unintended lessons.

"Do I need any special equipment to train my dog?"

Well, it depends a little bit on what you're training your dog to do, but in general the answer is no!
You simply need something that motivates the dog, usually treats, and a distraction free area.
For training a dog to heel (walk nicely on a leash) you simply need treats, a flat collar, and a leash. No special collars or leashes are required. In fact, often things marketed to us to "help" with walking nicely on a leash actually hinder the training process. If you're using a harness or a retractable leash, they might be working against you rather than for you. Please remember though, that every dog is different and if it ain't broke don't fix it!

Why does my dog eat grass?
This is a question that gets asked a lot and there's many possibilities as to why a dog eats grass. I'm linking an AKC article below, but I'll summarize it for you here.
The most commonly held belief is that dogs eat grass as a way to ease their stomach. This is a possibility for sure, but more than likely there is more than one reason for dogs to eat grass.
-It is possible if they aren't getting a well rounded diet they will eat grass.
- Similarly, they might eat grass for the fiber.
- They might eat grass out of instinct. Wild canines had grass in their diet by eating animals who consumed grass.
- They might like the taste and of texture of grass.
- They also might eat grass to release the bile in their stomachs.
- Boredom is also a possibility as to why dogs eat grass.

So, if your dog is eating grass make sure with your vet that you are feeding them a food that gives them all of the nutrients they need, but if they are on a high quality food they are likely just enjoying themselves.

What kind of treats should you use during training?
Try to use something very small, low in calories, and soft.
Big treats or hard treats take longer for the dog to chew causing the dog to have to pause between tricks to finish a treat. It may not be a big deal when a dog knows a command well, but when they are first learning a new command, a few seconds of distraction can be all it takes for a dog to have a setback.
It is also important to remember when training a new command you should be using the treats rather liberally. Since treats are often high in calories this can add up over time and cause your dog to gain weight excessively.
So keep in mind when buying training treats: small, low calories, and soft!

List some of your favorite places to go with your pet and tell us why you love going there!
I'll go first, but feel free to repeat!

* Wildcat Glades- the scenery is so beautiful for me and I love that my dogs can pick up so many smells.

* PetSmart- I know this one might seem a little odd, but I love people who love animals fawning over my dogs and they will inevitably do that here. 😆

* My parents house (okay don't repeat this one, it would be creepy😜)- it's out in the country and they are able to run full speed over a great big area.

Don't let the dog go crazy or get bored!
Dogs typically match the energy that they are presented with, so when you're training you need to remain positive and calm. We don't want to get so excited the dog starts doing zoomies, but we want the dog to be interested and engaged in what we are doing by being upbeat.

Not a week goes by where I don't have to reassure a concerned dog owner their dog's social behaviour at the park is 100% NORMAL!

It's so strange the way we expect our dogs to go to the park, meet 5-10 random dogs, and get along with them all perfectly.

Me? I hate going to nightclubs. I'd rather have coffee with one or two friends, or maybe a walk. Maybe you're the opposite and love going to crowded pubs and making new friends! Neither of us are 'abnormal'. Ok ok, maybe I am - sometimes I take a book to the pub to sit quietly and enjoy my craft brew...

So the sooner we all realise that our dogs have personalities too, the sooner we can stop creating goals for our dogs that they'll never enjoy.

If your dog is aggressive or nervous around other dogs, it's totally reasonable to have a goal to get them to walk past another dog on leash at say 5m distance. It's not a reasonable goal to expect them to enjoy playing with random dogs at the dog park!

As humans, we rarely stop to chat to folks on the street, unless we know them. Somehow this idea goes out the window with dogs, and there's this weird expectation to meet every single other dog on a walk! That's pretty stressful.

Most people want want their dogs to cope with the fair expectations of living safely in our community - to be neutrally social and robust. So let's set some fair expectations:

🐩🐕 Think about your dog's play style. Different breeds play differently! Eg herding, wrestling, body slamming, chasing...

🐕‍🦺🦮 Find a couple of well matched doggy friends for your dog, and let them play in low traffic locations (eg someone's backyard, a secluded park) to enjoy play time.

👋 Set the expectation early that not all dogs are there for play! Teach your puppy that most dogs you meet on the street aren't relevant to them.

🤚Advocate for your dog in play. Don't allow dogs to 'sort it out', or for your dog to bully or be bullied.

🤷‍♀️ Avoid dog parks. Sorry folks, these places generally suck for fair, beneficial and harmonious play.

Happy playing!

Over the next few days we are going to talk about the six most common mistakes we see advocates making when posting on social media. Please see Wednesday's post for the full background, and yesterdays post on inflammatory and defensive responses.

Today we are examining a statement we see a lot: “it’s all how you raise them”.

Here are some actual comments we read online in response to a recent dog bite fatality:

"It's all how you raise them 100% we have 5 pit bulls and they are big babies but if provoked like any animal they could do damage yes!!"

"Dogs are 80-90% how their human owners treat them and train them. The humans responsible for that dog should be held fully accountable for that attack."

"It's all about how they're raised, my dog is a rescue and has bad traits due to this. A dog is a product of their environment."

This seems to be an appealing sentiment, because it allows us to believe that we have full control over our dog’s behaviour. Unfortunately, it’s simply not true.

A dog is a product of both nature (genes and heredity) and nurture (environmental and external factors). Both factors play a significant role in all beings, not just dogs. Scientists have been unable to give a percentage as to how much influence both nature and nurture play. This is a very complex issue that is specific to the individual.

A dog can be raised in a home environment that has done everything possible to ensure a happy, healthy, and well-mannered dog. But despite these efforts they still end up with a fearful, anxious, unstable or even aggressive dog.

Why? Because genetics are real. A predisposition towards anxiety and fear can develop at the time of conception and can imprint a puppy from this moment. The mental and physical state of the momma dog during pregnancy has also been shown to affect the puppies for life.

On the flip side a dog could be raised in an environment that does everything wrong, and once removed from that environment that dog can flourish. You would expect this particular dog to never recover from the way it was raised but some of them certainly do.

We don’t know the exact balance of nature/nurture in any creature, but we know that temperament is ALWAYS a combination of both. That goes for good temperaments as well!

Some dogs have naturally stable and resilient personalities. These are the ones you see rescued from abusive or puppy mill seizures but go on to make fantastic family pets, even therapy or service dogs. If it was “all how you raise them” there would be no hope for these dogs, but there are a ton of these examples.

By denying the reality that a dog’s behaviour (like ours) is dictated by a combination of genetics, brain chemistry, environment – and probably a number of factors we don’t even know about yet – we aren’t giving them the respect they deserve. They are not blank slates or robots. They are complex, sentient, emotional animals. And that’s why we love them.

We suggest that we stop using “it’s all how you raise them” and refer instead to proven risk factors for behaviour. You could also talk about the responsibility of an owner to use behaviour modification and responsible management if their dog does show concerning behaviour. You can find information on both topics on our website.

This past week was Dog Bite Prevention Week. The best way to avoid a dog bite is to be able to recognize and read body language from a stressed, anxious, fearful, or agitated dog. (Graphic found through the Divine Dog Project).
