There is a critical concern within the veterinary community regarding an upper respiratory illness affecting dogs nationwide. The virus initially resembles kennel cough but can be more severe and in some cases fatal. Some dogs display a mild cough while others suffer from severe pneumonia.

Call us right away if your dog shows signs of persistent coughing, fever, lethargy, and loss of appetite.

One common factor among the affected dogs is that they have spent time in places with a high concentration of other dogs, such as boarding facilities, doggy daycares, or dog parks. If your dog is frequently with other dogs, ensure they are current on their Bordetella and Influenza vaccines.

With the holiday season approaching, there is a possibility that we may see a surge in cases. To protect your dog, practice good hygiene (especially after contact with the other dogs), wash your hands, minimize contact with symptomatic dogs, and ensure your dog is up-to-date on their vaccines. If your dog's vaccinations are not current, please schedule an appointment with us at your earliest convenience.

❗️𝗠𝗔𝗥𝗬𝗟𝗔𝗡𝗗 𝗣𝗘𝗧 𝗢𝗪𝗡𝗘𝗥𝗦 ❗️

There has been an animal safety alert issued by the State of Maryland for the non-tidal Potomac River due to toxic algal mats. Anatoxin was detected at higher levels than seen before. No animal cases have been reported to date; however, animal contact with algal mats that have washed up on the shoreline should be avoided. These harmful algae are native to the Chesapeake Bay and occur in higher abundances mostly during low flow, high temperatures (the hottest/ driest parts of summer) and when specific nutrient levels are present. Toxic algae mats are currently located in the Potomac River in the area from Edwards Ferry to Great Falls, Montgomery County.

🔺𝙏𝙝𝙚𝙨𝙚 𝙩𝙤𝙭𝙞𝙣𝙨 𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝙗𝙚 𝙦𝙪𝙞𝙘𝙠𝙡𝙮 𝙖𝙗𝙨𝙤𝙧𝙗𝙚𝙙 𝙬𝙝𝙚𝙣 𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙝𝙖𝙧𝙢𝙛𝙪𝙡 𝙩𝙤 𝙖𝙣𝙞𝙢𝙖𝙡𝙨.🚫

𝗣𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝘆𝗺𝗽𝘁𝗼𝗺𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗱𝗼𝗴𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝗱𝗲:
* Tremors
* Muscle rigidity
* Paralysis,
* Convulsions,
* Coma,
* Cyanosis
* Hypersalivation
* Potential death

🔺Livestock should be kept away from algal mats and kept out of the river.

🔺Dog owners are advised to keep pets on leash, prevent them from eating algal mats (in water or on shore), wash them after being in affected areas, give fresh water to drink and contact your veterinarian if signs are noted.
