For those who have asked... there will be very limited quantities of honey available this year. It will be bottled in a couple of weeks, and I will know better. I'm guessing 50 pounds or so. If you're looking for honey, let me know!

This is hive #2. They are spicy and not happy with my intrusion and complete over haul of their hive. They are very hard workers and have outdone their neighbors by doubling their house in a week! I may have to keep their spicy-ness in check as they grow in size over the next couple months. They are not a bad as my Russian hives I had several years ago but I'll be watching.

What would you name hive #2?

This is chill Hive #1. Just doing their thing. Paying no attention to me. Maybe we should name the hives??

This one's personality is way more lax and definitely is not filling their boxes as fast.

Well, I didn't expect this!!! I thought this race would at least go for a couple of weeks! One of the hives filled the 2nd deep with honey comb!! (The other is virtually at a stand still)

So what does that mean?

Hive #2 will no longer have supplemental feed. It now has a queen excluder and 2 honey supers on it. So yes, they can start to make honey for a possible harvest!!

What is a queen excluder? It's a wire frame that has small slots in it. They slots are small enough for the worker bees to get through, but the queen who has a much larger abdomen can not. That means she can't go up to the honey supers to lay eggs. Honey supers are boxes that are above the rest of the hive where they store extra honey (honey I'll take in the end of August).

Hive #1 has been really filling the first deep but just not wanting to draw honey comb on the second. I will need to watch that one to see if they need help to get them ready for winter.

So- like I said I didn't expect it to happen so soon- Hive #2 wins!! I guess it makes sense when I look at it because Hive #2 was always a little more spicy. And spicy hives make more honey. πŸ˜‹ 🍯

Is it just me, or do you find slow-motion video of bees in flight hilarious?? They are so clumsy!

These bees were doing orientation flights. Which means it's the first time they are leaving the hive, and they are setting their gps and stretching their wings.

Video Comparison- hive #1 vs hive #2.
Watch to the end.

The race is on! Who will do it first? Who can fill their 2nd deep box first? Hive #1 or hive #2?

They are both working on drawing out the frames. Which means they are putting wax on the frames (honeycomb) so they can fill them with honey, pollen, and brood.

They need both boxes full before I can put honey supers on (honey, I can harvest). A lot of it also depends on what's available for foraging and the weather. Too much rain and they can't get out. And being a new area, I'm not sure what is around here for them. I think it will be similar because we are still in the Minnesota River Valley and not too far from where we used to be. It's just with the flooding- who knows?!

What do you think? Hive #1 or hive #2?

The girls are doing well as they start to build the comb and fill their second deep box. I think queens love new frames. This queen was laying like crazy in the new frame. Can you see the eggs?

That's a wrap on our month long series on honey bee anatomy. I hope you learned a few things along the way.

Did this bring up any new questions? Let me know what you would like to hear about next.

What do you know about a honey bees skeleton?

As you may know, insects do not have internal bones, but they have a different type of skeleton than humans. Even though bees may have hair and be soft, they still have an exoskeleton. It is made of chitin and is covered with wax, which protects the internal organs and holds in moisture.

🐝 ❀️Bonus: bees have an open circulatory system. They do not have veins or arteries. Instead, their internal organs are bathed in a liquid called hemolymph. They do have hearts that circulate the hymolymph.

What can you tell me about the honey bee reproductive systems?

The reproductive organ of the drone (male) is the endphallas, which is used to mate with a queen. The drone does not have a stinger, pollen basket, or wax glands in its abdomen.

The worker bee, which is a female, has undeveloped reproductive organs. They are sterile and not able to lay fertilized eggs. Occasionally, a worker may lay eggs when a colony is queenless, but they will all be unfertilized eggs and, therefore, drones.

The queen bee, although she is also a female, from the very beginning develops different anatomy than a worker bee. She has a longer thinner abdomen that is useful for laying eggs. She has several developed reproductive organs such as ovaries, fallopian tubes, seminiferous tubules, and a special organ called a spermatheca. She is the only bee capable of laying fertilized eggs in a colony.

The spermatheca allows the queen to decide if she is laying a fertilized (female) or unfertilized (male) egg.

What can you tell me about the honey bees' digestive system?

It's hard to believe honey bees, as tiny as they are, have organs inside their little bodies. Honey bees' digestive system is mostly in the abdomen and takes up a large part of it. It has 4 main parts. The esophagus leads to the crop, which is like a stomach that holds the honey or nectar. It has a special part that allows workers to remove pollen from the nectar and make sure any digested food does not enter the crop, which ensures the nectar is never contaminated. The second stomach, or midgut, is where digestion happens. Then, lastly, the re**um is where waste is stored until the honey bee is ready to relieve itself. The honey bee is very clean. It will not relieve itself in the hive, and it leaves the hive to poo. In winter, in our area, that might mean the bee may need to wait months to go to the bathroom!!

What can you tell me about the honey bees stinger?

Most people are obsessed with one part of the honey bee.... the stinger.

The stinger is used to pump venom into a wound. Worker bees stinger has a barbed end. This is what gets stuck in our skin. It is removed along with the venom sac when used, and the bee will die. The queens stinger is longer and is not barbed. It would not stick like the worker bee. Queen bees rarely sting. They mostly use their stinger when they first become queen and are removing the other queens from the hive by stinging them.

It is important to note that drones, the male bee, do not have a stinger. Only worker bees and queens have stingers.

What can you tell me about the honey bees abdomen?

The third and final segment of the bee body is where the reproductive and digestive organs are. It's also where the stinger is, in workers and queens. (Drones don't have a stinger!) The abdomen also has wax and scent glands.

Yes! Wax comes from a gland on the honey bees' abdomen. It's then shaped and formed by the mandibles to create the shape we are familiar with for honey comb.

What can you tell me about the honey bee spiracles?

Spiracles are how bees breathe! They are 10 pairs of tiny holes in a straight line along the bees thorax and abdomen through which bees breathe. They have 3 pair on the thorax and 7 pair on the abdomen. Air from these holes travels down the tracheal tube into tracheal sacs, which distribute air.

Bees don't have lungs, but they do breathe!

What can you tell me about honey bee legs?

Honey bees have 3 pairs of legs, 6 total. They each have six segments, which makes them very flexible. They also have taste receptors on the tips. Each pair of legs has different purposes. The first pair is used to clean the antennae. The second set is used to pack the pollen and propolis into the pollen baskets in the third set of legs. The third set of legs are specialized. They have combs and a pollen press. They are used to brush, collect, pack, and carry pollen and propolis back to the hive in their pollen baskets. What an amazing design!!

What can you tell me about honey bee wings?

The honey bee has 2 pairs of wings, so 4 wings total. The front wings are larger. The 2 sets of wings are hooked together to synchronize during flight. The wing hooks, called humulus, unhook when at rest.

What can you tell me about the honey bee thorax?

The thorax is the second segment in the honey bee body. It's the middle part of the bee, between the head and abdomen. It is where the legs and wings are attached. It also has some of the first sets of spiracles. It's the center for locomotion for the bees and also has 3 segments.

What can you tell me about honey bee antennae?

Honey bees have 2 antennae attached to their forehead. They use the antennae to feel, taste, and smell. They also can detect humidity, temperature, carbon dioxide, gravity, and wind speed! Each one has thousands of receptors to identify things like flowers, water, their colony, and more.

Like I said, the antennae has many receptors. One is called the Johnson's organ. This one is fun as it is able to detect minute vibrations and very slight changes, including sound waves, and magnetic and electrical impulses. It can hear a bee dance in the dark by sensing the sound waves. It's like the bees ears.

What can you tell me about the mouth of the honey bee?

The mouth has two moveable jaws (mandibles). Unlike our jaws, honey bee mandibles open side to side, and both sides move. They cross over one another in front of the mouth like a pair of crossed arms when not in use and protect the proboscis.

Honey bees use their mandible to feed larvae (babies), collect pollen, and carry and manipulate things, like beeswax. They can use it to bite invaders that are too small to sting. There is so much they use their mandibles for!

Well, the hives have been slow to build this spring. The queens made it through winter but have been struggling to lay eggs and rebuild the hive. So the hives are working to make new queens. It will be a few weeks before we know if they are successful.

Queens are made from female eggs that are fed a special diet by the workers. This turns on genes in the female to develop into a queen. Queen larva need larger cells and the workers will build out the comb to accommodate it. The queen cell kind of looks like a peanut. They are covered in bees but can you see the two queen cells in this photo?
