Melinda made Paw Balm, mostly because we were needing it for our Spa Package paw balm massages, but made extra for sale also!

They are $14.99 and we love our simple paw balm!

We love it in the summer to protect the paw pads from hot surfaces outside. We also love it in the winter to protect those pads from cold surfaces as well as salt or other de-icing products!

As a sidenote, this balm makes EXCELLENT cuticle repair balm for us humans!

Melinda’s Paw Balm only has three simple ingredients and NO PETROLEUM derived ingredients such Mineral Oil or Paraffin.

Is paw balm safe to use on dogs’ dry noses? NO!

Are essential oils or herbal additives safe ingredients in paw balm? NO!

Here are some important misconceptions and recommendations about paw balm:

* Most paw balms contain waxes or butters/oils high in stearic acid. This means that the product is occlusive.…which means that it forms a barrier and prevents loss of moisture. Doing this to a dog’s nose is NOT RECOMMENDED.
* The rhinarium (the furless part of the nose) needs to be free of any occlusive barriers that can affect the ability/sense of smell.
* A safer alternative to help dry noses would be a light application of Vitamin E oil (after checking with your vet of course!).

* Why aren’t essential oils or herbal additives recommended in paw balm? Anything applied to dogs needs to be safe for ingestion and dogs like to lick their paws at times!
* While there are plenty of essential oils that can be safe in product formulations for dogs, there are too many variables that affect safety such as concentration of the essential oil, frequency of application, and size of the dog.
* If the purpose of paw balm application is to protect the pads and provide a barrier, simpler is better….and safer.

* Why are herbal additives possibly not safe? Well, one common herbal additive is chamomile. Chamomile can be a wonderful ingredient that has anti-inflammatory properties. But chamomile is in the same family as ragweed! If a dog has an allergy sensitivity to ragweed, applying chamomile could be a problem!

It’s just better to err on the safe side. Always consult with your veterinarian when in doubt!
