Attention : We need your help finding Hershey the perfect home! This little guy came in as a stray last week. We estimate him to be around 3 years old and he weighs approximately 20 lbs. Normally we don't have trouble finding homes for small dogs, but Hershey isn't your average dog. We don't know Hershey's history, but we do know that he absolutely hates men. So much so, that he will need to be adopted into a home where he will not have to be around men, at all. Even our male staff members, who feed and care for him daily, have not been able to win him over. We don't know how he would do with children, but we would not recommend that he go home with young children, or any male children of any age.

So, to sum it up, if you're part of an all-female household and you happen to be looking to adopt a small dog, we hope that you'll come by and visit Hershey. His adoption fee is $150 and will include a voucher to get him neutered and get his rabies shot. We've already given him his basic vaccines, deworming, flea/tick treatment, a microchip and we had him groomed. We're located at 292 Spur 162 in Jourdanton, and we are open from 9 am to 5 pm Monday - Saturday.

Good afternoon !
Please take a moment to review our January numbers. Along with the data shown below, we also microchipped 19 animals for the public. Remember, we offer microchipping to the public for $25 including microchip registration!

If you have pets at home, please be sure to get them their basic vaccines. Our facility's pet population is a direct reflection of what is out in our community and unfortunately, we are seeing an uptick in parvo and distemper cases. Parvo and distemper are easily prevented with proper vaccinations, so please get those vaccines up to date! Keep an eye on our social media posts for the chance to get free basic vaccines for your dogs and cats later this month.

Our kennels are full. We need to find adopters for at least 15 large dogs, or we will have to euthanize to make space in our kennels. To help, we are discounting the adoption fee for all dogs to $25 for the remainder of this week.

Good morning Atascosa County! Our staff is here cleaning and feeding our shelter pets and ensuring everyone is staying warm and cozy. Unfortunately, the increase in laundry from all of the extra blankets has finally caught up with our old washing machine and it has died. We are reaching out to the community to see if anyone has an old washer they are no longer using that they would be willing to donate to the shelter. It doesn’t have to be pretty or fancy, as long as it works. Please comment here if you have one you’d like to donate and we’ll reach out as soon as we can, most likely tomorrow. Thank you!

We are sorry to announce that we will not be able to offer free vaccines tomorrow. The flu has started to make it's rounds through our staff, so we will not have extra staff as planned to administer the vaccines. We'll reevaluate next week and make an announcement regarding rescheduling. Thank you for understanding!

Thanks to the Friends of Atascosa County Animal Control and generous donations from the public we are excited to share we are offering free adoptions for the first 3 dogs and 3 cats adopted today! This offer is only good today! We’re open until 5 pm!

UPDATE: FOSTERED! Salt (more black) and Pepper (more white) are a brother and sister duo that were brought to us on May 14th. We estimate them to be just under six months old. Both are already spayed or neutered. They are very friendly, social, and love other dogs. Salt and Pepper are at risk of euthanasia tomorrow if space cannot be made through adoption or foster placement today. The adoption fees for both Salt and Pepper are free.

Maple (Brindle) and Freya (White) have been at the facility since May 7th. Maple and Freya are female Catahoula mixes estimated to be just under a year old. They are not spayed, but their adoption will come with a voucher their spay surgery. Maple is more outgoing than Freya, but both are sweet, friendly, and good with other dogs. Maple and Freya are at risk of euthanasia tomorrow morning if space cannot be made through adoption or foster placements today. Maple and Freya's adoption fees are free.
